You can follow the link below to vote for the best songs ever written in Performing Songwriter magazine's online poll. You can vote multiple times (for a different song each time), but I think it would be awesome if all JMDLers could agree to cast one vote for the same particular Joni song, to help her chances of securing a solid ranking. Even before hearing about the poll, I would have said that Hejira is one of the very finest songs ever written, and that would be my choice for the one we all vote for. What do you guys think? Vote for your all-time favorites through December 15 Ambitious? Audacious? Arrogant? Absolutely. But that's not stopping Performing Songwriter from divining the 99 greatest songs of all time! The magazine has just launched an online Readers' Poll at performingsongwriter.com, with results to be published in its 99th issue in January. "It's more than a bit outrageous to name the 99 greatest songs ever," says Performing Songwriter Editor & Publisher Lydia Hutchinson, "but we're just the magazine to do it. Our readers -- both those who make music and who follow it passionately -- have a keen appreciation of what it takes to create a truly great song. We also want to hear the reasons behind the songs they love, and will include their comments in our feature story." Voting is open to the public at www.performingsongwriter.com; submissions will be accepted until noon on December 15. *Please share this email with fellow music fans -- we want to hear your greatest hits!* About Performing Songwriter Performing Songwriter magazine is designed for those who create or simply love music. I'm honored, really, but, er, how many cacklers do you have, anyway?? >Sooooo are >you saying Witchiepoos and Ocultist-toos lay stuff >on people but not any more than the no fun >fundamentalists, etc.? No. :-) I'm saying Witches (leaving aside "occultists" for the nonce) have usually done it far less than many kinds of Christians in general, and on far less "grand" a scale. Bearing in mind the Salem "Witch" Trials, the Spanish Inquisition, and a cast of heavily persecuting thousands, don't you know. >Yes, and I've also seen sign-based resentments >that happen during such relationships... Hmmm, yeah, you're right, after all... I just remembered how many Sagittarius guys I've had "issues" with through the millennia... :-) >gotta >blame it on something I suppose. Abso-bloomin'-lutely, yes, too true... on Sag guys! Not to mention all those other signs and seasons that don't suit us, eh? One of my friends is a Roman Catholic who I swear is more pious than the Pope. His idea of a good time is to go into a divinity library and pile the most obscure tomes he can find as high to heaven as he possibly can, poring over them in total ecstacy for hours on end. He reportedly got kicked out of a monastic retreat weekend for instructing the good brothers in their devotions. Heh. Cackle. >I think this is just the kind of person Roses Blue >was written about even though the mysterious >devotions are RC. Ha... But my friend isn't putting anybody in a "black" spell. He isn't laying anything on anybody. Certainly not Tarot cards, or blue roses. Or even rain on shingles. In fact, he once gave me a beautiful framed portrait of a medieval-looking Virgin Mary, in appreciation of my seeing her as one face of the Mother Goddess. I hung the pic over my desk, very pleased, but then my friend's priest actually told him he should try to get it back-- that it was "blasphemy" to have given a picture of Mary to a Witch. I suppose he assumed I'd be hanging it upside down or using it to perform unclean acts on during a black mass, or something. Sigh. My poor friend was very distressed-- his beautiful and genuinely Christian gesture was turned by his supposed spiritual shepherd into a thing of "sin". Spooked for his immortal soul, my friend offered me anything else I wanted instead. I said I was sorry, but that I couldn't return the picture, for that would have been to acquiesce to a force promoting falsehood and fear, at least in that instance, but that I would have given the thing back if I'd thought for one minute my friend's soul were in any kind of jeopardy. Do I presume to judge such things for myself? Yes, I absolutely do. Haven't sung it for awhile, but I've thought of recording a cover version of it sometime on a future album. That and "Pirate of Penance", yo-ho, yo-ho... >Cool... go for it! Hey, I will! I just thought, you know, it'd be kind of cool to record the thing, being an actual priestess myself and all. Though anybody can ask ME how to think any time, anywhere, honest, without being too terribly daring. For the album, I could have a funky far-out cover photo of myself sitting on a roof playing a balalaika amid a bunch of blue roses on some shingles in the rain, or something. :-) >I didn't get "scary" out of Roses Blue, not as in >"boo" scary anyway. It is more of a wake up call >song in my opinion. Not BOO scary-- just "Roses BLUE" scary. I still think some of Joni's lyrics are a bit overwrought and perhaps a wee bit alarmist, however much I love them. Hey, occasional melodrama can be good for the soul-- if only it WOULD be occasional! Cackle. Let's hear it for Nature's Blueprint: the fun & fearless female! You know, with all human embryos being female to start with, and all... >Lots of little Roses Blueprints... Really, they aren't >exactly all "female to start with." The phenotype >during development actually looks more male at >one point even for female embryos. I'm sure that's so, appearance-wise, but from what I've read, ALL embryos are essentially biologically female at the beginning. It's considered fact nowadays, I believe. So... no more chaining us with that "Serpent" to that Ethiopian wall, "anybody"! That bogus Adam's Rib myth is the clearest case of womb-envy and psychological reversal I've ever seen! If you'll all pardon my passionate forthrightness. :-) >All for the roses, >Laura Songs are like tattoos... or are they? Penance Crane might know the answer... Yes, "She knows the answer" "I don't know"... And of course, that is not how it is meant! True beauty is not about "looks" at all whether it be a woman or a man. Joni's beauty in person is startling because it is like her entire inner beauty, spirit and personality just bursts out of her pores. She has a glow around her, light sparks brightly from her eyes and her countenance is very soft. The bright burst of inner beauty you experience when you meet her in person transcends her physical features. She has presence and is fully animated and engaged. I think when people say someone looks so youthful it is not because they have been dieting or had botox or nips and tucks. I think it is because all the trials of life have not completely conquered their spirit. Rather than having, for instance, a hard, cold, hollow or weary look in their eyes, their eyes still have some of the sparkle of a teenager or the innocence of a child. Rather than having a tired, grim or resigned bearing, they look spunky! That's what makes them look youthful or what can be regarded as beautiful. And that's what Joni has going on ;-) Kakki ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2006 #328 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
