And as per usual, both tricks & (mostly) treats aplenty in this, yet another submittal in the never-ending saga of Joni covers. Thanks to my stalwart supporters Paul & Monica for their assistance, as well as the fine gentleman who sent me the live Diana Krall - forgot your name and I hope you read this so you can step up and take a well-deserved bow. And if you want to listen along while you read, go here first: http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=batch_download&batch_id=8VLKwqg%2FwLg%3D And now, let's crawl under the covers and see what pops up... 1. Tamarisque - The Circle Game: We start off with a recording from the other side of the world (from me, anyway). Australian folk groupTamarisque consists of the Gordons; Hugh, Jane, Janet & Alexander, playing a variety of acoustic instruments such as fiddles, guitars, mandolins, etc. 2. Aimee Mann - River: I know I'm in the minority, but Aimee Mann's voice gets under my skin worse than a gaggle of New Orleans chigger-bugs. Whiny, monotone, nasally and void of warmth and/or sincerity while exhibiting the range of a junior high school talent show contestant. Skate or sleigh, I don't care how, but geez Aimee Mann won't you please go now? 3. Restoration - Both Sides Now: Wow, this one is so Partridge Family cheesy it makes Velveeta look like health food. And what really makes this track stand out in a wonderfully bad way is the insertion of a "Jesus" chorus after each of Joni's original choruses. Makes me wanna put my hands in the air and sway, and of course make a healthy contribution to the building fund. Has to be heard to be believed. I'm sure they think they improved on Joni's original composition. Oh well, like they say, something lost and something's gained in living for the Lord. 4. Albert Au - The Circle Game: Hong Kong's own Albert Au graced last month's issue as well with his version of BSN - this time round (and round and round) it's his take on The Circle Game. Except for sounding a bit like Elmer Fudd at times, it's a straightforward cover, which means he digs in and goes for about 5 minutes or so. 5. Jason Feddy - Big Yellow Taxi: A hard-to-find track from an out-of-print CD. Jason's an ex-Brit, now living and playing on the California coast. This poppy version has some original lyric flourishes and Jason's voice navigates it clearly and powerfully. 6. Kim Cataluna - Twisted: Another take on the Gray-Ross classic, features a boppy vocal by Ms. Cataluna and some nice jazz piano too. She races right through it and clocks in at under two-and-a-half minutes. 7. Paul Tillotson The Love Trio - Big Yellow Taxi: A very different BYT; an instrumental, slowed down and set to a gentle jazz rhythm and lots of nice 'weird minor chords' thrown in the mix to make it even more interesting. Me likey for sure. 8. Cass Elliot - Sisotowbell Lane: I've talked about this one ever since its release last year on a Cass rarities collection. Her lovely voice is a natural for the tune, and since it's the only cover of SL it's significant in that regard as well. Starts out sounding like Urge For Going - I guess the two songs do share some characteristics. I'm certainly glad they pulled this one off the shelf - I only wish Mama Cass was still around to give us more Joni covers. 9. Kristin Hoffman - A Case Of You: I was very lucky to snag this one...Kristin's an NYC singer-songwriter that was giving away EP's at her gigs featuring this track. She kindly agreed to send me a copy of the EP, so thanks Kristin! Her operatic training serves her well in terms of vocal clarity, and she invests the right emotion of heart and soul into it as well. 10. The Swingle Singers - River: These folks have been around for a long time...acapella before acapella was cool, one might say. They have previously given us "In France They Kiss On Main Street", a little more creative choice than this but they are still vocally very strong here. 11. Vox One - Woodstock: More acapella, but Vox One specializes in throwing elements of gospel, soul, and blues into their jazzy stew. A variety of lead vocalists helps to make this version of Woodstock one of the loveliest you'll hear. 12. Patty Greer - The Circle Game: Patty is a harpist, which in no way shape or form sets you up for what she does with TCG. Her soulful vocal sets a groove, and she throws in many original musical additions, including a guest rap. Doesn't like like it would work, but it does...for me, at least. 13. Patty Greer - A Case Of You: Now, on THIS track Patty's harp gets center stage moreso than on TCG, the creative warm vocal remains the same however which is indeed a good thing. Quite an original treatment. 14. Stan Ridgway - Both Sides Now (he calls it "Clouds"): Those of you who don't know Stan may be aware of the 80's one-hit wonder Wall of Voodoo (Mexican Radio). I was a fan even before that and have followed WOV's lead vocalist Stan Ridgway's career ever since. His songwriting style is Raymond Chandler-esque, he plays a mean harmonica, and his voice is certainly a unique and easily recognizable instrument. I'm guessing that only Jody & I will dig this one, but at least we're in good company. 15. Diana Krall - Black Crow (live): This live recording of Black Crow (the original studio version appeared on her last CD The Girl In The Other Room) is from her Montreal Jazz Festival DVD release, and the band is kickin' it - nice clean guitar solo (sounds like something off a 70's Steely Dan record), Diana's vocal has that combination of sultriness and urgency that she does, and her piano work is equally solid. As much as I dug the studio recording, these guys really stretch it out and breathe new life into it here. 16. Jacqui McCarthy - I Think I Understand: Hailing from NY State, Jacqui presents a lovely guitar and fiddle version of one of my fave Joni songs. Sweet. 17. Markiza & Peter Brown - River: This one is a bit different...Markiza just sings the words without investing a lot of emotion in them over a country & western twangy sort of rhythm. Sounds like she REALLY wishes she had a River so she could go do some fishin'. 18. Joan Bender - Both Sides Now: Joan sings Joan...this version of the franchise sounds like it has its roots in Joni's MOA version with fading, sliding and bending notes over a smallish jazz combo. A little too correct/formal sounding for my tastes. And there they are - this month's box o' goodies. Hope you enjoy them, and if you're not able to get the download but still yearn to hear this collection, let me know and we'll figure something out. No Joni Cover left behind, that's my motto. I'll be back like a bad penny in a couple weeks for another retro batch, and in a month for another brand new lot.
