It's been swirling in my heart and mind all week and I have to get it out. My analyst told me. Some turn to Jesus And some turn to heroin Some turn to painting, or singing, or guitar-playing, or piano playing, or dancing, or pills and powders to get us through this passion play. I guess I turn to writing. I never knew that before; it's something I'm just beginning to realize, by being here. Thank you for helping me to grow, and for taking me as I am, and for sometimes approving my self-expression. Likewise, I am always here for anyone whose spirits start to sink. It's a you-know-what! Madwoman of Mansfield Found, Unfettered and Alive Flip City, CT (Combined Wire Services) October 14, 2006 Concerned friends and kin breathed a collective sigh of relief yesterday as the "Madwoman of Mansfield" was found, unfettered and alive, at her workplace in Morning UConntown. Numerous reports from passersbys and lovers on the streets had trickled through leaky police plans all throughout the week. The Madwoman of Mansfield (hereafter sometimes referred to as MoM -- an acronyn, for Catherine) was spotted in various locations and activities: travelling in some bumpersticker-bedecked vehicle ("My other car is a big yellow taxi", "Dumont for Senate", "War is not the answer", and the enigmatic "SIQUOMB" - --- ????), running through the woods like a white-assed deer and jumping from boulders, pulling up to a gas pump and shrieking out the window: "HEY! Where's barangrill?", stepping inside a candy store, going cafe to cabaret, gathering flowers for her home, stopping in boutiques (it's comin' on Christmas) and swinging hot spots, underneath a street light (A m-m-madwoman - madwoman, kicking over garbage cans), and you know there may be more. Yet all week, police were unsuccessful in catching her. Just when they were thinking they finally had it made, she'd get her gorgeous wings and fly away. Wild things run fast. *Finally*, as the milk trucks made their morning rounds, after *days* of JRAs (Joni-related absences), the Madwoman showed up at her workplace in Morning UConntown. Her fingernails were filthy and she had beach tar on her feet. She entered the building singing: "Tell those girls that you've got Joni, She's coming back home. She's coming back home!" She skipped up to group of French colleagues chatting in the hallway and rudely interrupted, gushing: "Wooo hooo! Guess what! You won't BELIEVE it! I can't take it....I can't seem to believe it. You know my two biggest passions, right? Darn right!" The French faculty exchanged furtive yet amused glances. Eliane thought for a moment in time, out on some borderline, and then ventured: "Uhhhhhh......Joe-nee Meetchell and...... Oh Mon Dieu! Je sais! Je comprends maintenant. Joe-nee Meetchell ees going to marry senate hopeful Jed Dumont! C'est ca! C'est ca, Patti?" MoM collapsed in hysterical laughter. "Non, non, non. Mes copines, ecoutez! Ecoutez bien! Elle revient! Joni!!!! Finallement, after so many years, tethered to an art easel, elle parlera au suject de la GUERRE et l'etat affreux du monde et...." Roger C. shook his head, and said she's changed. He whispered to Solange: "I've never seen her THIS twisted before. Elle est *completement* folle aujourd'hui!" Solange nodded in agreement: "L'hysterie. Absoluement. Sans doute." The Madwoman continued with her good news (Oh radiant happiness). It was all so light and easy, until she started analyzing, and brought on her old ways. A thunderhead of judgment was gathering in her gaze. "Attendez un instant. You don't get it, do you? You Frenchies don't know merde! Joni Mitchell is a GODDESSE! Osvaldo in Spanish even said! And Roger T. in Classics said it, too. And he "knows from goddesses", in his own words. He loves "Circle Game", "Blue", and "Little Green". Voila! Sacre BLEU de cochon VERT. What is the MATTER with you freakin' freedom fryers? Joni wrote "Free Man in Paris" and "In France They Kiss on Main Street". She sat in a park in Paris, France. She even wears fancy French cologne. She loves France, even though it so old and cold and settled in its ways. Why, if she had her way, she'd just wander down the Champs Elysees. Oh, shame on all of you!" The rant goes on. "I may be almost fifty-three, but I am *swinging!" Joni Mitchell is COMING OUT OF RETIREMENT. We on the JMDL thought she'd never write again, and now she is. She is in touch with the breakdown of this century! Oooh la la -- that dizzy, dancing way you feel, when every Joni fairy tale comes real! Vous ne comprenez pas?" The French professors thought they were gazing into a madwoman's soul -- the Madwoman of Chaillot reincarnate, peut etre? Someone asked: "Qu'est-ce que c'est, c'est "jmdl'?" and Eliane whispered: "Some lunatic-fringe internet discussion group she is on." With that, Ms. Parlette started roaring like forest fire. "Ha! I think you're immune! You just don't know enough. Life is for learning! You professors, of all people, should know that! Go look at your eyes! They're full of Voltaire and Gide and Sartre and Camus and de Maupassant, and you don't know diddly-squat (or dee-dah as Joni and Joan sang) about the greatest artiste of our lifetime. What about Baudelaire, votre grand poet? "Fleurs du Mal". Ha! Don't you know that Joni has written better Fleurs du Mal than he ever did?" The MoM ranted on, starting to shake her fists at lightning now. "And don't you *dare* make fun of my jmdl. There are some brilliant -- *brilliant*, I tell you -- people on that list. We have philosophers and teachers from Spain, actors and a queen from the UK, psychotherapists from the U.S.A. and Ireland and Argentina, and librarians, and a scholar in Norway named Karen Marie doing her dissertation on Joni (and you know there may be more). A famous actor in Israel. Musicians from all over the world. Paz who has toured with Arlo Guthrie and you know there may be more. Awesome songbirds in DC and SB. A guy in Boston who handles "Joni in Fiction". A Musik Meister in SC who is the Covers King. And an English professor, too, from the South. He read Joni's new poem and said it is very good. Very good. Un explication de texte will follow when time and good fortune allow. Camille Paglia wrote a book that began with Shakespeare and ended with -- yes -- Joni Mitchell." The MoM made most people nervous -- they just didn't want to know. Anne stood in her frightened silence, thinking she didn't understand. Eliane quietly slipped away to phone the Employee Assistance Program while the others tried to talk sense to the troubled child. And then the Germans came walking by. The Madwoman grabbed Katharina's arm and said: "Ha! Katharina knows Joni. She went to UCLA, in California. Oh, California, I'm coming home." Katharina smiled and said: "Naturlich! Ja. Joni ist ganz wunderbar! Joni sings about Rhein wine, Milch of the Madonna." The Germans grinned. "You're so square, Frenchie babies, but we don't care." The hallways were filled with passersby, and term papers fly, and cellphones came ringing up like pipes and drums. In some office sits a secretary, and she trembles as she says into the phone: "Patti? Ummm....she's not....ummmm... available right now." A few seconds of silence, and then: "Oh, It's Janis? Well then, I can tell *you*. She's having a Joni emergency. A *really* bad one. Worse than when she heard about that tribute thing." - ------------ Phew! Holy merde. I have to stop. "How do you stop?" LOL....I could write this crazy shooby dooby flip city stuff all day, but I have other things to do. Such as think of what I'd like to have for supper, take a walk..... Bon weekend, tout le Joni monde! Love, Patti P., off to take a shower, where I will sing, with anima rising: "Wash my guilt of emailing, wash and balance me..." (with "balance" being the operative word!) NB: the above post is a partly fictionalized, quasi-journalistic account of one JMOCDed woman's reaction to the announcement that Ms. Mitchell is coming in from the cold to speak out against the madness that is gripping the world. One person's name (a political hopeful in rooms like these) has been changed to protect (from googlers) his channelled aspirations to change course of this country, and the world. Maybe I should just get a small white one. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Oct 2006 06:40:27 +1000 (ChST) From: "P. Sara Craig - This Flight Tonight (Live '93)" That's the first time i hear Sara's Live version of This Flight Tonight. Sara's Studio version is one of my fave J covers and the best This Flight Tonight cover i ever heard. 6 or 7 years ago, when i heard it for the first time, i bought Sara's Sweet Exhaust CD, thinking that anyone doing such a great cover must also make great original music, but her own songs were not so great at all. Still, Sara's Flight is a fine one to me, and hearing it now Live as well is fun. Thank you, Bob.
