I had never seen Cyndi Lauper's "Carey," although I had heard about how great it was here. What an inspired cover. I think Cyndi is brilliant. It was great to finally see this performance. Questions for Muller: Have you captured the audio portion of this performance for your Joni covers? I've heard so much about this TNT tribute over the years, but I've never seen or heard any of it. Wow, thanks for this link. While reading the article, I had major goosebumps. Something in the way the writer evoked an era made me want to do what Joni did -- that is driving driving driving all by myself (hopefully not forgetting my driver's licence) and really just experiencing various minutiae in the lives of people I will not probably meet in this lifetime. I always liked the image and feeling and colors and sounds and smells evoked and conveyed by a hejira. Travelling with good friends can be fun but travelling alone has an almost spiritual dimension to it. Like going to one's own mecca. Or just getting lost in the shuffle of people, accents and smiles. Since I am not famous like Joni, 'enjoying a civilian status' is something I already enjoy. Maybe next year before I conclude my 5-year grad study in the US, I can do my hejira and talk about it when I am old and grey (which is not that far away either). I haven't included them on a Volume because the show stands alone as do the other Joni Tribute CD's out there. Nothing was ever officially released, but I sure have made lots of copies of that CD and video. < Also, any performers who have done a better job covering this song? > Cyndi's version was great, and what made it even cooler was that it brought the one true moment of spontaneity to the show - the band was fading it out, and Cyndi felt inspired to do an encore/reprise and the musicians started trading these semi-panic'ed looks with each other but they drew from her inspiration and made it work great. As for other Carey covers, my favorites would include Mark Erelli, Judd Grossman, Tony Malone, Theresa Andersson, and the foreign-language versions from Chava Alberstein, Lill Lindfors & Ulf Lundell (because I love to hear Joni's songs in other languages). Carey is #12 on the list of Joni's most-covered songs with 40 covers thus far. I opened this morning's digest and saw that Deb posted this beautiful poem. Date: Sun, 08 Oct 2006 17:08:27 -0400 From: Deb Messling Subject: School Prayer -- Poem just thought some of you might like this poem that was featured in today's Writer's Almanac, which is a free poem-a-day service provided by Garrison Keillor and the Poetry Foundation. The poem is called "School Prayer," and was written by Diane Ackerman. School Prayer In the name of the daybreak and the eyelids of morning and the wayfaring moon and the night when it departs, I swear I will not dishonor my soul with hatred, but offer myself humbly as a guardian of nature, as a healer of misery, as a messenger of wonder, as an architect of peace. In the name of the sun and its mirrors and the day that embraces it and the cloud veils drawn over it and the uttermost night and the male and the female and the plants bursting with seed and the crowning seasons of the firefly and the apple, I will honor all life wherever and in whatever form it may dwellon Earth my home, and in the mansions of the stars. "Huh?" I said to myself, as I wiped the sleep from my tired eyes. Is it Sunday? Is it Monday? Is it Bill Murray's "Groundhog Day"? I thought I was nuts -- no more ifs or ands or buts. And I think to myself: Didn't Smurf already post this? It's the first entry on the digest. What's going on? Monday, Monday, can't trust that day. But that was Sunday. This is Monday, isn't it? It's the first post on Monday's digest, too. What day is it? Does anyone really what know what time it is? I didn't get enough sleep. I'm dreaming. Or re-dreaming. LOL....I checked around and saw that Smurf's posting of that beautiful poem was the first entry on Digest #369 (number 9, number 9), and Deb's is the first post on Digest #371. Okay, finally my weak and a lazy mind has it all figured out. Phew! I'm still sane. (Well, *generally* speaking, anyway). So now I come out to wonder how cool it is that great Joni minds think alike, with these broader sensibilities. No wonder we're all here in this time and cyberspace! (NPIMH: "Reach out in the darkness") (Sorry, Muller! LOL!) In more swirling synchronicity, Kate and I both thought of St. Francis's Peace Prayer, and would've posted that almost simultaneously if it weren't for the time difference. With a big smile, Patti P. She always tells me how much she loves Joni and how she has been practicing guitar every night and writing songs. Her mother was/is a hippie and while she is a bit younger, she regards herself as a hippie, too. So I thought she would be glad to hear that Joni might be coming out with some new songs. Oh no, she was horrified and thought that Joni was right to quit when she did. She actually compared Joni to the wrinked likes of Bread, Peter Frampton and the Rolling Stones not knowing when to hang it up. I argued that lots of people would just be glad that Joni was still creating and even if her renditions were not quite like the old days, there are always great artists who could interpret and cover (Hi Bob) her new songs. Oh no, she said, covering her face with her hands, it is too horrible to imagine. Then I said Dylan is still going strong even though he can't sing anymore and he just came out with a new album that is getting good reviews. She laughed in my face and said no one buys or listens to Dylan anymore. I said yes they do and she said no they do not! Parallel universes, eh?
