I assume Joni's videos will be included in this deal: NEW YORK (Reuters) - Music videos from Madonna, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sean Paul will be legally available for the first time on YouTube, the online video sharing site, which signed its first commercial partnership with Warner Music Group Corp. on Monday. YouTube, which has over 100 million videos viewed everyday, and Warner Music, the fourth biggest record company, said on Monday the pact would help Warner distribute music videos, behind-the-scenes footage, artist interviews and original programming. The companies said YouTube users would also be able to incorporate music from Warner's catalog into the videos they create and upload. Music videos belonging to Warner Music and other record companies are regularly uploaded to YouTube by its users but usually without permission from the labels. The partnership, which has been in discussions for months, was signed late on Sunday afternoon. It comes just days after Universal Music Group, which is owned by Vivendi, described YouTube and News Corp.'s social networking site MySpace of being "copyright infringers" that owe the music industry "tens of millions of dollars." The strong language has prompted speculation that a lawsuit is imminent from Universal or some other owner of copyrighted material. "We've been in discussions with many of the labels, television networks and movies studios," Chad Hurley, YouTube chief executive and co-founder, told Reuters. YouTube and Warner Music said the deal would enable both parties to generate and share revenue created by advertising, which will be featured around the videos. Warner Music executive Alex Zubillaga said the deal will start to generate significant revenue for Warner from next year as user volumes grow. "We're trying to lead through innovation as opposed to litigation," he said. YouTube said it would use a new advanced content identification and royalty reporting system, set for release by the end of the year, to identify the music videos and help manage payment to the record labels. Hurley said the proprietary tools YouTube is building will allow Warner Music to manage the licensing of its music and videos remotely. YouTube said it and Warner Music would share revenue from advertising on both music videos uploaded by the artist and user uploaded videos that incorporate audio and audiovisual works from Warner's catalog. - --------------------------------- How low will we go? Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2006 12:36:29 EDT From: Subject: JC on the wane What I notice amid the heated political discussion is that there doesn't seem to be a lot said about JM and her music. Maybe it's because she is no longer creating new works; maybe it's because only once in too-long-a-while do we get an "introducing myself" from someone new to us who has just discovered JM and/or this list. DAVID LAHM - ----- Well, I'm new to this list, I discovered JM the year Hejira came out, but until a few years ago I only knew of that album and Dog Eat Dog. Man have I listened to Hejira many times! Perhaps four years ago I met someone - a gay guy (which brings about the question: why all the gay people on this list? what is it about her??? Am glad not all gay people are into Kylie Minoque, thanks you guys (and of course you are not)!!) who knew absolutely everything about her. He had just bought Travelogue; and opening it and seeing the paintings I thought, this is like CHRISTMAS for someone who likes Joni Mithcell (but I didn't like all of the songs on it I have to say, although some of them have been minor revelations)... So there was one question embedded in the paragraph above. Another one, which has to do with why I signed up to this list: those of us who like her, are obviously deeply affected. I am not surprised to find that she has been compared to Dylan, etc. But how come the world seems to be divided into those who have completely seen the light, and those who never even heard her name? I have two friends, apart for my gay expert, who are really fond of her, but they only know her music because I played it to them. They knew Rickie Lee Jones, but not Joni Mitchell. Same with most of my other friends, they'll play obscure French singers, and Bjoerg and Tori Amos, so they like their arty female singers, but JM - never heard of her. Is there an explanation? Or is it just one of those things, just like the gay thing perhaps? About the discussions on this list: yes, there was apoint last week when I thought, well, this just seems to be a private forum for people who are getting on each others nerves about American politics. But then I guess if it was 20 emails a day with news about Joni Mitchell I'd get enough of that too, I even think it gets a bit too Joni-intimate at times. I like the discussions about music - my first post was about people's favourite male singer because I thought it was interesting to know what other Jonilovers were into. But then I guess there are other things than music that would bind people together who like JM. I do think people should give it another thought before they post pages and pages of NJC at all. I get the digest and can't press delete you know! When somebody posted a link to a site full of JM quotations, I noticed most comments were about how she felt about US politics, and she obviously has strong opinions; and most comments to her comments, on this list, were about politics. But actually, the one that I am still thinking about was the one where she said (something like) "to write a god song about heart-ache (or something similar..) you need to reach a moment of clarity, otherwise it's just moaning". I wonder if that is part of what is so appealing about her songs, that painfully gained insight...? Or again, is it just another one of those things...? Enough for tonight (it's night in the UK!). Am happy to be on this list, it has a great atmosphere ...! My first thought was, "because we're so sensitive and appreciate of fine art," but of course sensitivity and art appreciation is not limited to gay people. Speaking only for myself, I think perhaps it's that many of Joni's songs are about painful longing. What she has written, played, sung (and painted) doesn't have to match exactly to any one thing or set of things that may have happened in the listener's (or viewer's) life. Rather, it's the FEELING that her work brings out of a person, and oftentimes it has to do with how to deal with longing. Again, it's not limited to gay people, but gays and lesbians certainly have known our share of longing ... to be accepted, to be loved, to survive, to [fill in the blank]. Just my nickel's worth for now. Lori Santa Rosa, CA ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2006 18:42:07 -0700 (PDT) From: Kerry Subject: Joni wine? And here's a review of her new CD for your reading pleasure. If nothing else, make sure to read the last sentence. Joni mention....vive la Joan! Bon reves. (Pleasant dreams.) Love, Patti P. MADELEINE PEYROUX Half the Perfect World Rounder Singing songs of love in a smoky, seductive voice, Madeleine Peyroux is an enigma, an elusive mix of melancholy and jaunty celebration on her latest. On the opening track, "I'm All Right" - one of four songs the singer and guitarist co-wrote - the melancholy optimist laments a recent breakup. Instead of just wearing her heart on her sleeve, she tempers her hurt with irreverent humor and the belief that heartbreak isn't a terminal affliction. Although Peyroux rues being lonely, she recounts funny recollections about her ex-beau's smoking smelly stogies in their bed and how her romantic ideal would get dead drunk and toss her things around in the bedroom. Whenever she approaches the edge of sadness with her spare but richly expressive voice, she sounds a defiant existentialist note about holding onto the present moment. Whether singing originals or familiar tunes such as "The Summer Wind" and "Everybody's Talkin'," she puts a deeply personal, intimate imprint on the words and melody in a way that's moving yet never over-the-top. Inevitably, her haunting voice is compared with Billie Holiday's, and there are hints of Holiday-like depths here, glimmerings in the bittersweet "The Summer Wind" and in the bright, syncopated "California Rain." Peyroux enjoys fine, varied accompaniment whose jazzy flavors range from country and honky tonk to a string quartet. As a bonus, there's a dreamy duet between Peyroux and k.d. lang who skate through Joni Mitchell's "River," a museful, soothing song stocked with poetic wishes. - - OWEN MCNALLY Courant, 9/14/06 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Sep 2006 20:14:51 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Joni wine? - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kerry" >A wine label inspired by Joni? > I've seen it in a store-apparently vinted locally- try this link https://secure17.nexternal.com/shared/StoreFront/product_detail.asp?CS=mwc&RowID=7&All= ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Sep 2006 00:07:31 -0400 From: Victor Johnson Subject: Re: Joni wine?
