Listen to WPR this Sunday! I am taking the liberty and risk of deleting the "NJC" tag on this one, just in case some of the "Joni-onlies" would want this time-sensitive information. Just wanted to let you all know that, at my request, the "Simply Folk" program on Wisconsin Public Radio will be playing a set of Jack Neilson's songs on their listener-request program this Sunday, September 10, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., Central time. However, the host has told me that Jack's set will most likely air between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Central. The program can be accessed live online Sunday evening at wpr.org. Just go to the website and click on "listen to WPR online" in the upper left-hand corner. You'll be given several listening options: e.g., RealPlayer and Windows Media Player. Simply Folk is carried on both The Ideas Network and WPR's Classical Music Network, so, whether you choose the options on the left side or the right side, you can't go wrong! In short, if you like Jack's music, please tune in to Wisconsin Public Radio on Sunday night, and celebrate a talent who left us far too soon, but who still survives in the work and the many friendships he left behind. Take good care, Mary P. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 08 Sep 2006 23:00:11 +0000 From: "J Harney" Subject: Joni in cultural criticism This is pretty random, but I thought it might bear a mention. I was excited to see Joni listed in the index of an updated edition of a scholarly work about mass media, THE REPUBLIC OF MASS CULTURE: Journalism, Filmmaking, and Broadcasting in America Since 1941 [3rd ed.] (Baltimore: The Johns Hopkins Univ. Press, 2006) by James L. Baughman. Okay, here's what Mr. Baughman writes: Rock itself split into several directions in the seventies. Although the Beatles broke up in 1970, the British invasion continued. British vocalists Elton John and David Bowie proved to be among the decade's most popular performers. A smaller share of the popular music audience patronized American vocalists like Joni Mitchell, who mixed folk and rock. On stage with a guitar and little else, Mitchell and other singer-songwriters, Ken Tucker writes, "to great care to maintain the illusion of intimacy with their audience." And that was it! Surely you can see why my initial excitement faded after reading that short and rather uninspired analysis. Joni has always maintained that she is a "woman without a country", so I suppose that being cast as an American wouldn't be so bad or bother her too much. But the word "patronized" was what got me, as if listening to Joni's music, whether hearing it live or from a recording played in one's room, could somehow be likened to a lowly consumer task, like selecting an exterminator from the Yellow Pages. (To be fair, I do like the point that is being made about the performer trying to bridge to divide between herself and her audience, but in this case Mr. Baughman could have used an editor leaning over his shoulder.) Well, back to lurkdom for me. All best for the weekend.
