Michael Hedges sang??? I adore Michael Hedges guitar playing. I went through a period when I listened solely to Windham Hill artists. I always thought it would be wonderful if Joni got together with some of the Windham Hill musicians. Then was overjoyed when she started performing with Mark Isham. Which albums did Michael Hedges sing on? Mark in Sydney NP Rainbow Song - America. The lyrics were secondary at the outset. It is difficult to describe anyone else as either the Male Joni or the Female Bob Dylan, as each is a universe unto themselves. My first impression with the topic was to compare Van Morrison to Joni, vocal-wise. Van is wont to carve fresh tracks in the vocal powder, as is Joni. They also take huge vocal leaps from the expected, on occasion. Each singer demands one's attention, if for no other reason than to hear if they can land the jump successfully back in the groove. The answer has always been, "Yes, Van and Joni, go for the Chevy". (Freestyle skiing term from yesteryear meaning give it all you got.) Both are fearless at getting to the edge of their knowledge and abilities, they revel in probing for the outer limits of their art of singing. In my appreciation of Van and Joni, spanning their entire careers, I have been slightly disappointed once or twice by their lyrics or song choices, Van's more than Joni's, but never in their vocal performances. Both remain unique artistic tools intimately and wholly connected to the very centers of their souls. The release date listed is a bit of a giveaway. For that reason I would be surprised to see it come down. I would also be surprised to find a commercial single in the U.S., although Joni will make her dough nonetheless. "River" certainly makes sense as the choice because a station can play it in September even though it's on a holiday album. I'm with the folks who reviewed it on YouTube... big yawn. If I'm going to listen to a cover, I'd rather Robert Downey Jr's or James Taylor's.
