In some ways it doesn't make sense to expect to see folk-rockers in the 21st century like we had in the Great Folk Scare Of the Nineteen Sixties. Imagine it's 1969 and someone's saying, "I just don't get the same feeling that I did from the jazzers. Where are the new hard bop soloists? Where are the great melodies? There isn't one voice nearly as good as Ella or Frank in the new crop." Every word might be true, but... We're very lucky to have recordings. The ad posted on the bio section at JM.com reads "Joan & Chuck Mitchell"...if she was thinking "I can get out of this" when she was walking down the aisle, why did she tie her professional name to someone who she disliked? She had established a solid reputation as "Joni Mitchell" prior to her recording her first album, but it seems like it would not have been a major deal to market the new name - it's not like "Anderson" is a weird name or anything. Excellent points, and now it's my turn to say "I dunno," although there is something stuck in my head that says that Chuck was annoyed that Joni intended to keep his last name, and her attitude was basically "too bad." Anyone else recall this? (I've tried to search the discussion list archives for this reference, using the search function at www.jonimitchell.com, but I just get errors.) The only thing I can think of -- other than maybe Joni just liked the sound of "Joni Mitchell" better than "Joni Anderson" -- is that Chuck married Joni when she still had Kelly Dale (later to be known as Kilauren), and perhaps she wanted to keep Mitchell as some sort of link to her child. (Although I don't know if Kilauren was ever known as Kelly Mitchell -- anyone else know?) Lori Santa Rosa, CA ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Aug 2006 01:06:01 -0400 From: frednow@aol.com Subject: I love olives Man, I love olives. I live for olives. I lurve olives. The olive is one of favorite fruits. There are many, many varieties, depending on where they were grown, their size, stuffed or not, marinade ingredients, method of curing, and degree of maturity ... green are least ripe, "pink" (rose/brown) are a little riper, black are mature, and wrinkled black are fully ripened (as opposed to those which are wrinkled black from dry-curing, although I love those olives, too). I have never met an olive I didn't love, except for generic canned supermarket "olives." Olives are ancient, olives are biblical. Olives are good for you; they contain important fats, vitamins, minerals, and proteins, and are rich in essential amino acids. Olives have no cholesterol, are high in monounsaturates, and low in polyunsaturates and saturated fatty acids making them one of the most healthful of all the fats and oils. And, of course, really good olive oil tastes really good. Olives are the only fruit that must be cured; they can't be eaten raw or cooked without removing a certain naturally occurring bitter chemical. They can be cured in oil, brine, dry-cured in salt, or even in plain water (takes a longer time). Generic canned supermarket "olives" are cured with lye in days (instead of months). We all know that olive branches symbolize peace. Ironic, isn't it, considering that olive cultivation began in the eastern Mediterranean 6000 years ago. Many supermarkets these days have good olives in their deli sections, in bowls or bins or bushels or barrels. Try some Gaeta, Halkidiki, Kalamata, Manzanilla, Nicoise, Nyon, Salonenque, Lucque, Picholine, or Sevillano olives today! - Fred Simon ________________________________________________________________________ Check out AOL.com today.
