Is this the first album that Joni let him cut loose on the charts and allowed the musicians to play something that she liked as opposed to C&S where he wrote down what she dictated and played that... I'm long overdue to rejoin the conversation, and am somewhat behind in posts, alas. Nevertheless, I love this group! Just wanted to mention, in case nobody else had caught this yet, that Joni's clothing style from her "hippie heyday" has a quarter-page feature with three pics, titled "Fashion Flashback", in the September issue of *TeenVogue*. I don't have a teen daughter, BTW-- mine's 24 now-- but I still sometimes buy such mags for my own Inner Teenager, who just for fun still indulges in the annual ritual of picking up the*Seventeen* Back-to-School issue, and suchlike, even though I'm thankfully long past school age, thank Goddess! Freeeeeedom!!! ;-) Actress Mischa Barton, this issue's cover girl, cites Joni as "a muse" and professes to be a fan. Joni is referred to as "a folkie" by the feature, though... something of a too-limiting misnomer, I'd say... but since she started out on acoustic guitar, and performed original songs partly or even largely inspired melody-wise, seemingly, by certain Brit & Euro folk song modalities, I suppose that's forgivable of the mag. ;-) One of the three pics shows Joni playing guitar while sitting on the grass next to David Crosby, who's leaning against a birch tree near a fence. Joni's wearing dark blue flared-leg pants (maybe indigo jeans not yet faded), and some sort of lovebeads on an orange top with short dark blue- and orange-striped sleeves. This was clearly taken at the same time as a similar pic which appeared a couple of months or so in one of those *Guitar Legends* mags-- but in that photo, Eric Clapton (aka "God", per a popular graffito from back then) hadn't been cropped off. In it, he's sitting cross-legged across from Joni and David in quite funky hippie threads of his own, cigarette in hand, staring at Joni and listening intently with a look I'd describe as nothing less than spellbound fascination and complete absorption. Hmmm... was it Steven Stills or David Crosby who once reportedly described Joni as "a love gangster"? Ah, how I miss those glorious days. The thing is, I *still* dress like a hippie. It's not a mere fashion affectation for me. I figure I'm entitled! :-) Blessings, Isadora http://www.ladyisadora.com "Well-behaved women rarely make history." - --Laurel Thatcher Ulrich - --------------------------------- Want to be your own boss? I've must admit, as a longtime musician myself and a fan of both these songs for many years, they've never once remnded me of each other or struck me as similar. That doesn't mean somebody else can't associate the two songs, but I'm newly thought-provoked by the idea! I'm aware Robert Plant and Jimmy Page of Zep were/are admirers of Joni, but they had plenty of other influences too, of course. Joni was no doubt one of the inspirations for the fact that so many songs on *LZ III* are acoustic, but Page and Plant have at times cited other inspirations for the album, as well. Both songs could be said to be very pensive and moody, but so can a lot of other songs that aren't otherwise similar or necessarily derivative. Pensiveness and moodiness are grand old traditions in song and music in general, after all! No one songwriter, however talented, can be quite so influential as to have a patent on such stuff, of course. Joni is most definitely one of *my* biggest musical heroines & heroes, but I was already singing and playing guitar and writing songs when I first heard her work in high school, and I always felt I resonated naturally on a similar wave-length. When I or Page and Plant or anyone else write(s) songs, ultimately the songs come from our own hearts and minds, natch, whoever else's music we love and may be listening to. Jimmy Page was already a songwriter-guitarist of quite eclectic versatility and considerable sophistication, even brilliance, by the time he would have encountered Joni's music. Melodically and vibe-wise,"Cold Blue Steel.." to me has a rather sophisticated, very jazzy feel, and Joni's vocal tone per se sounds almost remote, even a bit cold, at times, which is not to say she doesn't sing the lyrics with feeling-- there's a lot of feeling in this song. "That's the Way" has a drifting, musing, tender, bittersweet folkie feel to me. They conjure up very different mental landscapes in my experience. Just my two doubloons' worth, mateys! ;-) Isadora http://www.ladyisadora.com JMDL Digest wrote: JMDL Digest Tuesday, August 15 2006 Volume 2006 : Number 288 Date: Mon, 14 Aug 2006 10:50:19 -0500 From: "Snatch N.
