She simply doesn't care period. The rules of grammar don't apply at all. I have a degree in English Lit but I seldom if ever pay attention to grammar when writing songs. I don't think there's any premeditation here at all or any ulterior motives. It's just a song and when writing a song you can throw all the grammar rules out the window. Just forget that they even exist. Example: excerpt from "Master of the Ring" by Victor Johnson Dragons in waiting don't come around cities The king under the mountain don't live under the street I want to walk in the forests of Fangorn I want to walk in Durin's caves. The second line in this song is not grammatically correct according to the rules of grammar. Technically the verb should be "doesn't" instead of "don't". But this is a song and not a lecture so the rules of grammar are immaterial here. If I recall (its hard thinking back to 1988) when I wrote this song I just wrote it without thinking about it and did not hem or haw over how the line should read. It's something you just know. One of my classes at Georgia State was on Singing in Italian and we found that in many Italian arias, the way they are sung differs very much from how the same thing would be said in a conversation in Italian. Maybe if you added a comma: "It's all a dream she has, awake", it would make more sense. But then we'd need to get into an argument over where to put commas (!!!) and I'm not going there! P.S. Most teachers are of the Mrs Grundy variety and don't know nuffin' 'bout grammar but know a lot about rules. Most of the time, we learn the rules only so we understand the language, and then are free to break the rules. I guess that's just my opinion, but it's good enough for me. Hmmm....From a writers perspective, I know the difference between correct and incorrect grammar but sometimes, it just "feels" right and flows better to say it incorrectly. I don't know about Joni, but when I do it, it's definitely purposed. I think it was "purposed" when Joni wrote this the way she did as well. I don't consider it "dumbing down" at all. I consider it "artistic choice" and "artistic freedom" and something that is deliberately done to express an idea of a song. For instance, using the word "Gonna" instead of "going to" in a song sometimes gets the point across better and helps with its flow. Flow of lyrics is very important to me and I believe to Joni as well. I think all songwriters make deliberate choices with their words in some form or other. I'm just hoping that the listener can see it in that light as well. Communicating the idea and the meat of the song is what counts most to me. Sherelle Jim wrote: She says "those ones *THAT* ain't afraid" which is another purposeful grammatical error. Since she's talking about people, I think it's supposed to be "those who are not afraid." 1. those ones 2. that 3. ain't I agree with you, Catherine. It's incongruous for Joni to mis-use English like this. Why did she do it here? Was she trying to lighten the heavy topic with blue-collar language? If so, she didn't feel the need very often. She's usually philosophical and rarely dumbs it down. All the best, Jim L. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2006 01:50:30 +1000 (ChST) From: "P. Cover King Bob Yesterday I bought an album fron an exciting jazz singer named Robin McKelle. She placed third in the 2004 Thelonious Monk Vocal Jazz Competition (where the incomparable Gretchen Parlato won the big prize) and her latest album Introducing Robin McKelle is a very swinging vocal jazz record that brings back the vibe, the sass, and even the sound of the recording of the 1940s-50s-era big band. I like the arrangements so much and her voice recalls very early Sarah Vaughan (around the time Vaughan was singing Lover Man, mid-40s). So taken I was with her that I searched for more info online and stumbled across her earlier album (2000) in CDBaby called Never Let Me Go where she recorded the Wardell Gray-Annie Ross' Twisted. This might be something worth getting, Bob. Moving across the Pacific, Korean-born and Japanese-bred Ann Sally who recorded two Joni songs from her debut album Voyage was said to have released a live album called Hallelujah where she sung All I Want. But Japanese import CDs are quite expensive, no? Ann Sally has a very exquisite voice that recalls Lisa Ono and Rebecca Martin.
