"I've got a head full of quandary and a mighty, mighty thirst - for the FIRST, that is! Hello, and welcome to yet another volume of Joni covers - the ongoing project in which we uncover folks who tackle (and sometimes are eluded by) Joni's cornucopia of compositions. As is almost always the case, I had some helpers in gathering up these chestnuts, so thanks to Garret, Adrian, and Nuriel for their contributions to this one. Now let's dig in and dig us some cookin' Joni covers: 1. Paul Bristow - Both Sides Now: You know, I've heard lots of different vocal entries to BSN...Joni of course wrote "Rows and Flows of Angel Hair", but I've heard "Bows & Rows", "Rows and Goes", "Swirls and Curls" and so on...this recording starts out with "You circle left"....that's right, folks, it's a SQUARE DANCE record, with Paul calling out the dance moves and throwing in some of Joni's words from time to time. It's a hoot - guaranteed to make you smile. 2. Kate Fingerson - Coyote: Kate's a west coast singer - this is a great JLJ (just like Joni) performance of Coyote from a Joni Tribute concert. Which is also the source for.... 3. Elena Rowell - Amelia: Elena's version of what is truly one of Joni's strongest songs is lovely and a little fragile. She's got a hint of Chrissie Hynde in her voice, and her guitar accompaniment is strong as well. 4. Chuck Maniscalco - Big Yellow Taxi: Inspired by the Counting Crows cover, this one features some nice guitar work and some cool multi-tracked harmony vocals as well. 5. Lorraine Gervais - Edith and the Kingpin: Lorraine's no stranger to this series; she released "Blue Motel Room" on her last CD and also sent me an exclusive recording of A Case of You. She loves jazz and Joni and this take of Edith is equally excellent - outstanding musicians on piano and stand-up bass complement her solid vocals. It's from her upcoming CD, "A World Apart", and you can hear it here first! Lorraine plays up and down the west coast and ALWAYS includes a Joni tune or two in her set, so if you get the chance, check her out. 6. Nuriel Tobias - Sex Kills: As you can guess, Nuriel's Joni cover is as unpredictable as he is - - his recording captures the chaos and tension of the song and contains lots of sound effects; dogs barking, the hissing of gas leaks, gunfire - all used to good effect. 7. Dolly Parton - Both Sides Now: What better to follow Nuri than with the Anti-Nuri? I do like the tempo of this track, and the banjo and mandolin. Dolly still sounds like an outcast from the Lullaby League to me, and she uses Judy Collins as a background vocalist as a bit of a gimmick. And how can someone see Both Sides Now when they can't even see the tops of their shoes? 8. Oscar - Woodstock: Patterned after the gorgeous Eva Cassidy cover, this one is equally gorgeous. Oscar was an acoustic duo from New Zealand, Kim Ward provides the soulful vocal and Tim Cooper plays guitar. (They split up this year). One interesting addition is the closing in which Tim weaves in the opening riff from The Doors' "Riders On The Storm" - sweet. 9. Janet & Kaori Ohuchi - The Circle Game 10. Janet & Kaori Ohuchi - Both Sides Now: These recordings are actually cooler if you know the history...Back in the 70's, a 23-year-old Janet recorded these two songs but never released them, instead she moved to Japan, settled down and had a family. When her daughter Kaori turned 23, she discovered these recordings languishing on the shelf and took them into a studio adding her own vocals and some additional instrumentation - thus, it's a mother-daughter act, both of which are 23! Knowing this, there's a sentimental quality to these tracks and lend a certain kind of tenderness. 11. Little Miss Higgins - You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio: Boy, I really love this one. Instead of taking the typical country-pop angle, Little Miss Higgins takes an Iris Dement/Gillian Welch "folkie on the front porch" approach, and really puts her own stamp on it, using a banjo as the lead instrument. One talented Canadian (she hails from Alberta) paying tribute to another. 12. John Estes - Both Sides Now: John is a finger-picking guitarist from California, and this acoustic instrumental is a lovely version. 13. Barbara Robinette - A Case Of You: Barbara's voice is OK (she was a former DJ so she's had plenty of training) but the arrangement and the instrumentation and production is pretty weak. 14. Dianne Eclar - Both Sides Now: From The Phillipines, Dianne's voice is pretty standard 21st century karaoke-pop quality, though she does have a clarity to it. I do like the accordion intro and the piano arrangement throughout. 15. Louise Rogers & Rick Strong - Twisted: Louise & Rick are a voice/bass duo from NYC. Rick's bass bops and Louise's voice is crisp & animated. A very nice and fun addition to this volume. 16. Voice Trek - Both Sides Now: This is basically a re-do of the Singers Unlimited acapella version. The voices are all really strong and the blend is good, they do a good job of updating it and if you're not familiar with the other one and dig that Manhattan Transfer/Swingle Singer sort of sound you'll dig this one thoroughly. 17. Bruce Isaacson with Red Seidman - Free Man In Paris: Refer to track 11...Bruce and Red play a guitar/fiddle version, and their vocal blend recalls Loggins & Messina, especially on L&M tracks like "Listen To A Country Song". They cut loose and play some nice instrumental breaks as well on this live recording. This one is definitely unique and one of my favorites in this volume. 18. Christy Moore - The Magdalene Laundries: European folkies will be well aware of Christy, he's never made much of a splash on this side of the pond, although his little brother (Luka Bloom) has. Christy is much more Irish and much more politically charged, so Magdalene Laundries is a good fit for him. His recording is excellent - - he does sing it as an outsider, and uses Joni's name as the character..."Joni was an unmarried girl...." "Joni thinks she'll die there too...". Another strong track. 19. Alison Crowe - A Case Of You: Alison's previous cover of Joni's River was a highlight; this take on ACOY, shared as a download from her website) is also exceptional and features Alison's emotive voice and equally heartfelt piano stylings. I would imagine in the wake of Diana Krall's recording it would be tricky for a singer to not assimilate any of that record into hers, but Alison does a great job of keeping the song in her own arena. I close the volume out with this one as Alison is always a tough act to follow. And that brings us to a close on another Volume of what at least one person says is the greatest collection in Rock & Roll history. But enough about me; you want to enjoy the tunes, so here's the first half to get you started: http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?action=download&ufid=F748618C2A5EE319 (I'll follow up tonight with part deux) And if you don't want to mess with the download, or have a dial-up but don't want to deny yourself the Joni covers joy, just drop me a line and we'll work it out. Thanks again to all of you who have helped out and kept the faith. Rest assured that there's much more to come - heck, there's probably someone recording a new Joni cover even as we speak! I've never heard anything quite like Paul Bristow's BSN. It's classic Joni! Not! I do think it's very original, though I've heard hundreds of covers of BSN I don't think I've ever quite visualized it like this. "you swing your girl there boy". And Nuri's version of Sex Kills, while not a Roine Stolt quality cover, is quirky and had me hoping, as I listened to the gunfire samples, that he and Guy are safe. Great job Bob, as always. Warmly, Cassy, who has trouble seeing her shoes too. I thought the same thing when I was writing that blurb, Cassy - Nuri, please check in when you can. Nuriel actually sent me an entire EP of Joni covers, I'll make the whole thing available here in the next week or so, assuming I remember. My schedule is pretty hectic at the moment. I've always enjoyed hearing the unplugged versions of the title track, Three Great Stimulants, Impossible Dreamer that captures the essence of the songs without all of the synthetic trickery. Between fixing her lyrics and her production, you're becoming quite the blasphemer there, Dave. I've got a paypal account so I'll take you up on your offer. Besides excellent cigars is there something in Cuba we need? Perhaps once we have "helped" the entire world become democratic, we could work on making them all Christians too? I also chuckled to see that you still signed off "Warmly" on that one (heh-heh.) Let's see - Cuba has cigars, and the power brokers of the world love those things. Just look at the Monopoly Man. They also have sugar - we all need more of that. The US has had a thing for Cuba for a long time, and let's not forget they have a commie government (that was sarcasm, OK?) But, the US needs to stay the hell out of that, not just because it's none of their business, but because you just can't fight a war on two fronts anyway, can you? That is SO asking for trouble, as if they're not in enough of it anyway. No more young people (or old ones, for that matter) need to die over this stuff.
