OMG, Michael, I am SO sorry. I met Jack when he came to Jonifest with you at Full Moon a few years ago. What a wonderful voice and a great guitar player. I have just moved from my house to an apartment a few days ago and am surrounded by bags and boxes of STUFF that I'm trying to find places for. This morning I'm up and the kids aren't awake yet, so I decided to try to clean up some stuff in my room. It's the biggest room in the apt and therefore the place where just about all the boxes got put by the movers when we got here, so I have to crawl over things to get in and out of bed. Despite having got rid of a lot of stuff (including my LPs in the end) before moving, there doesn't seem to be enough room in this place for everything. There was a small bag of CDs on the floor that I thought I would put on the shelves. The first one that came out of the bag was Jack's "Here I go again." How about that? They contribute a lot of money to various causes (enviornmental/political/humanitarian) plus their cost of touring and record company/management must take a lot off the top. In addition, I've never seen them do a show that was less than three hours long, so perhaps there's more to the ticket prices than meets the eye. The venue itself makes a difference; I saw them at MSG in NYC a few years ago & paid nearly a hundred bucks to sit in the upper section, then saw them at the relatively obscure Oakdale in Wallingford CT and paid something like $50. for a great seat close-up. Thanks so much to everyone for your kind thoughts and prayers letters and calls. I am trying to notify all of his friends, but it is a slow painful process. I just spoke with Beth Patterson who managed to have me peeing my pants with laughter. I am stronger this morning and am comforted by so much love. I told Mikey but still have not managed to tell Julian. All in due time. I realized that I did not tell you what actually happened. He was house sitting for a friend and the house keeper came in yesterday morning and found him in bed. He apparently had a heart attack or stroke. As a lot of you know he had a heart attack a few years ago and had some stints put in. He was trying to reduce his Krispy Kreme and Popeyes Fried Chicken intake and he really was doing well for awhile. Roger told me that he had been with him playing music on Tuesday night and had been complaining of chest pains, but in a laughing way. It was sort of the way it happened during jazz fest the year that he had it and we were laughing on the phone. But it got bad enough that it scared him and he drove himself to the hospital. That's all for now. Thanks again Love Paz ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2006 16:41:50 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: Jack's Funeral Just got a call from the family that the date has been set for next Thursday, July 27, 2006. This is such a blow, and my heart goes out to Jack's family and Michael's. I met Jack and had the unalloyed pleasure of seeing him play at Jonifest in 2002. He was so warm, so genuine, as well as supremely talented and modest. Which just emphasises the unfairness of it all. I always treasured the memory of him on stage playing "Hello My Old Friend": sitting on a chair, tipping it onto at most a couple of legs, eyes shut and totally absorbed in his performance. I've collected all the pictures of Jack from the 2002 Jonifest galleries on www.hatstand.org and put them here:- http://www.hatstand.org/gallery/v/JackNeilson/ I'm off to find a glass of something suitable, and raise it to Jack. He was, and remains, truly special. - --Chris ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 22 Jul 2006 17:59:55 -0500 From: Michael Paz Subject: FW: Jack's Funeral Forgot to put the place. But especially for you. Your post touched me deeply. I only met Jack at the Jonifest 03, but I loved his "soul". My wife, in viewing snippets from the DVD's, loved My Old Friend - thought it was a "really great song"; I concur. Sounds like a song he may have written for you. But, of course, it was for all of us. Great songs are like that. My intro to Jack was via your Pazfest CD - his Blue Boy caught my attention right away. His talent was as obvious to me as his tenderness and generosity seem to have been to you. (They say it takes one to know one). My heart goes out to you now; take care of yourself. Everybody loves you, man.
