I am a fan of hers since Time magazine did a feature of her debut album way back in 1996 (was that already 10 years ago?) and I still think that "Dreamland" is an amazing album/debut. I know that the Billie comparison will forever haunt Ms Peyroux but her take of such songs as "Walking After Midnight" and "La Vie En Rose" from her first album are truly beautiful creations, period. Besides MP, there are also other equally good singers that recall early Billie, from Ingrid Lucia to Janet Klein to Katharine Whalen and even the early albums of the late Susannah McCorkle. So it is nice to have MP's fourth album already out and she doing a duet with k.d. lang yet and singing a Joni. Joseph in Manila (typing in a keyboard so hard that I had to pound the letter "p" hard to make an impression) Bob.Muller@Fluor.com a icrit : Heads-up to you MP fans out there - her latest project, the Larry Klein-produced "Half The Perfect World" will feature a duet with kd lang of Joni's "River". For those of you who have not heard of or heard Ms. Peyroux, you can close your eyes and swear that you're listening to Billie Holliday. She also does Tom Waits & Leonard Cohen covers on the disc and does some originals as well. One of the tracks is co-written by Walter Becker of Steely Dan fame. Should be interesting. My rep was very impressed that I had so much knowledge about Joni and associates and that the Internet community was on the case watching out for her and Joel. Those of you who received them now have collectors items. I wish I could see one and evaluate it myself. Oh well. I guess we are waiting another year for it. Be well all. ALL relevant parties are involved in ongoing discussions regarding the SongBook "Joni Mitchell Complete" (ie: the problem AND the solution). :-) other than that, there really isn't anything more I can say at this time. stay tuned but remember, these things don't happen overnight. but, it ain't gonna take a year either. more later when there's more to say. andmoreagain, - ----------------- simon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jul 2006 18:12:36 -0700 From: "Mark Scott" Subject: Re: Web question I'm not sure I buy into the Jose Feliciano thing. Maybe he had something tangentially to do with the song. Maybe it was a private joke between Chaka and Joni that had little to do with it. Who knows? My feeling is that there is a reference to blindness but it's more figurative than literal. The next line is 'looking through a double glass/looking at too much pride and too much shame' which implies sight of some kind. And is the diamond dog the man or the woman? To me, if he gave her 'a diamond for her throat' it makes more sense that the woman is the diamond dog - the kept 'pet' with a diamond collar. And the cup and a cane refers to a metaphorical blindness stemming from the fact that her life is limited and colorless (darkness/wonder makes it easy/darkness/with a joyful mask/darkness/tubes gone, darkness, darkness/no color no contrast). She lives with or denies the darkness and 'stays with a love of some kind'. 'It's the lady's choice' to be blind, to be the trophy wife, the diamond dog. My opinion, anyway, for what it's worth. In its very short review of the book, Entertainment Weekly this week highlights the Crosby quote about Joni being about as modest as Mussolini. We've all heard that before, but I was a bit surprised at how no one quoted in the book seemed to have much good to say about Joni. They all admire her as an artist, but I got the sense that no one thought all that much of her as a person. At least the author didn't seem to find anyone with anything nice to say about her. Crosby and Stills come across worse. And if you're an Eagles fan, you won't find much that's positive about them either. The one who gets the best overall treatment and seemed to be genuinely liked as a person and respected as an artist is Linda Ronstadt. All and all, it's a fun book to take to the beach this summer. The writing isn't bad, the gossip is a little juicy and some of the photos are great. In a message dated 7/19/2006 7:20:08 PM Eastern Daylight Time, icnh@hotmail.com writes: Hi everyone... My main problem with it is that the information is all second or third hand. It looks like the author just collected all the interviews and other author's books he could find and made a story out of it. I prefer some first hand knowledge even if it's only one perspective. Fortunately I didn't have to buy this book, a friend found it in a used book store (already!) and I borrowed it. I didn't think it was too negative on Joni. It's worth reading but try not to spend much money on it. Doug anon anon wrote: > Hi everyone... I missed the "Hotel California" book discussion... > what does everyone think of the book? But she is also listed as contributing two songs I've never heard of: "Spoony's Wonderful Adventure" and "My American Skirt..." Anyone know anything about these?
