I know she doesn't have a "canvas cam" or anything, but does she ever peek out into the world and say hello? What is the last bit of news on her? I remember reading about someone in Canada doing a play, asking her to write some songs for it and possibly sing for it and she said she'd think about it. Any new news on that? Thanks, Wes p.s. Both "Wild Things Run Fast" and "Dog Eat Dog" are criminally underrated... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2006 08:22:50 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Joni cover on upcoming Madeleine Peyroux CD Heads-up to you MP fans out there - her latest project, the Larry Klein-produced "Half The Perfect World" will feature a duet with kd lang of Joni's "River". For those of you who have not heard of or heard Ms. Peyroux, you can close your eyes and swear that you're listening to Billie Holliday. She also does Tom Waits & Leonard Cohen covers on the disc and does some originals as well. One of the tracks is co-written by Walter Becker of Steely Dan fame. Should be interesting. Well, I think you have to look at the song in its entirety, and once you realize that she wrote it about Jose Feliciano (Chaka Khan let this tidbit slip), it makes a lot more sense, at least it did for me. The song's first line references a gift of a diamond from Jose to his wife: "He bought her a diamond for her throat He put her in a ranch house on a hill" So later in the song she refers to him as a "Diamond Dog, carrying a cup and a cane". The cup and the cane are allusions to Jose's blindness (a blind man holding a cup with pencils for sale and of course the white cane that a blind person would use while walking). Joni also refers to him as a dog, probably both in terms of how he treats his wife and also in the context of a seeing-eye dog. That's my take on it anyway - one of the myriad of suburban nightmare portraits on this masterpiece of an album. For me, A diamond dog/Carrying a cup and a cane has always conjured those tongue-in-cheek pub prints of dogs gambling or, in this case, walking about in 30s gentlemans suit with a monocle and cane. Just like the dog is not really a gentleman, neither is the husband in the song they have all the trappings of the good life, but its a sham. Dog connotes a pretty strong put down of a husband probably intended to conjure at least the suspicion of some philandering, within the context of the albums 70s era language. The diamond is also given to the wife in the first line of the song, but its for her throat for display not, apparently, for her heart. J Les Irvin wrote: Website question from Diana.
