As if life had loved him less" The Boy With The Gun - David Sylvian "I had a king in a tenement castle. Lately he's taken to painting the pastel walls brown. He's taken the curtains down. He's swept with the broom of contempt. And the rooms have an empty ring" I Had a King - Joni Mitchell "He leans well back against the tree. He knows his kingdom's come. He'll breathe a sigh self satisfied. The work is in good hands. I'm the law and I'm the king. I'm the wisdom, listen to me" The Boy With The Gun - David Sylvian Two stories of dominance and exercising power over others. According to Reuters/Billboard news: "Meanwhile, the Band will be the subject of a star-studded tribute album, which Savoy Jazz will release January 9, 2007. Among the acts due to contribute are My Morning Jacket (which has already recorded "It Makes No Difference" at Levon Helm's studio in upstate New York), Death Cab for Cutie, Gomez, Jack Johnson, Los Lobos, Dr. John, Allen Toussaint, Rosanne Cash, Joe Henry and Bruce Hornsby. Sources say a similar project devoted to Joni Mitchell is also in the works over at Nonesuch." No mention of it on the Nonesuch website as yet. (If I tag this sjc, will they get to enjoy it?) Catherine, you gave me a great idea! Have any of you seen those TV commercials that use OUR music to sell their wares? "All You Need is Love" in a credit card commercial, and "Magic Bus" for some car company? How about "Urge for Going" for that pharmaceutical they push for people with bladder control problems? Joni could sell them the rights and she could make a lotta money before she quits this crazy scene! Ha! Now every time I hafta faire pee pee I'm going to have this song playing in my head. Merci, mon amie! Yes indeed, we are always finding new meaning in Joni's lyrics. Laughing it all away, Patti P., not, of course, meaning ANY disrespect to our Joni or her lyrics. Never, my loves! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Jul 2006 13:39:45 -0700 From: "Lindsay Moon" Subject: Amy Sedaris & Leonard Cohen (VLJC) I also read lately (and now I can't remember where) that Amy said she loves Joni's Song for Sharon and that she hadn't yet gone to Staten Island to buy herself a mandolin but she was going to one day. Saw the documentary on Leonard Cohen last night, "I'm Your Man." Enjoyed it. His songs were performed by many of the Wainwrights, Rufus, Martha, etc. as well as Nick Cave and a few others. Also had Bono and Edge speaking about what a great influence he was/is on them (Edge likens him to a holy many coming down from the mountain with the stones . ooookay.) A lot of Leonard himself, very entertaining man in a held back, wry way. Said he's not a nostalgic person and so doesn't have regrets or self-congratulation. I tried very hard to listen to the words (see below) and found I had to close my eyes or look elsewhere because I was getting distracted by the visual images. One side note: If you hear in the coming days of some kind of mass murder taking place in a movie theater, don't bother to read the article because I will be the assailant. So help me God, what is wrong with people. Are they all ADD?? This film was shown in our local art house joint that shows indie and foreign films and maybe I kidded myself when I thought it might attract a more respectful, pensive audience. Wrong. People were up, down, in, out, crunching paper, talking, opening the door, closing the door, popcorn popping noise from the outside lobby, a lady behind me narrating good parts of the film for her friend . although I kept turning around and saying "Shhh!" Either I'm taking a machine gun next time or I want one of you clever techo people to make lots of money by inventing the same sort of thing they have on airplanes. I want to take my noise-cancelling headphones, plug them into the chair and dial in the number that will get me the sound of the movie and block out all this other stuff. It's either that or murder. Maybe it's medication time ...
