Thanks for the tidbits. I'm glad there is a lot about Gene Clark in there. He is really missed by many Byrds' fans. Someone told me awhile back about the Joni-Graham fling while he was married. I was very surprised but the info came from a very reliable source so I did some research and learned Graham had been married and kind of entered a new phase once he hooked up with the music scene in California, leaving the Hollies and divorcing his wife. I had a feeling that it would be depressing to read the recounting of the various "down the dark ladder" stories about the effects of drugs on this group. Although I recall reading and hearing many of these stories back at the time and being depressed about it then. I also personally had close musician friends at the time who went the same way. It was heartbreaking to me. On the bright side, so many of them did survive and come through to the other side and amazingly are doing better than ever now. Personally (and speaking as a musician who plays some guitar and dulcimer) I have to say it definitely 'matters' whether the tunings and chord shapes are exactly as originally played. There are lots of ways to get a guitar to voice a given chord, but more than subtle variations in tone do result depending on the effective length, and gauge, of the strings in vibration. Beyond that there are chord inversions: what notes are where in the chord voicing? When it comes to dulcimer, all the same factors are in play. Joni did not tune her dulcimer to a standard folk tuning. She put a heavy-guage string in the second position and played her bass notes there. Joellen Lapidus (who made Joni's first dulcimer) and Ruth Barrett, who together transcribed the dulcimer tabs for 'Hits' and 'Misses' advise 'don't try this at home' . Their tabs are written for trad folk tuning, which makes sense for most players because otherwise you'd have to re-string your instrument each time you played a Joni tune. And you'd have to keep a stock of different gauges handy, and plan on breaking them often. I have my own trad tuning versions of Case and Carey and so on, but they are only true in the sense of their harmony. The string tones and actual chord patterns are different than they were in Matala. Joni completists who seek to exactly emulate the tunings and shapes are not all crazy folks! It matters. (and then again, it doesn't!........) For on the other hand there is a long tradition of chord substitutions in jazz. This is a different animal. I go crazy in love when I hear some jazz chord substitutions in Jonisongs. The one that immediately comes to mind is Bryan's Thomas' version of 'Little Green'. I have been trying to find this chord (the second chord he plays in the chorus) for about ten years now! I'm getting closer... It's an absolute shame about the book. I have a keepsake to give her, if she'd like it -- a plate (antique I suppose) depicting the Bessborough Hotel seen through one of Saskatoon's bridges. Since the Bess has been a common retreat for Joni, when I received it (it was among my grandmother's collection of dishes, kept in her china cabinet for 40 or 50 years) and was trying to think of who might most appreciate it, Joni came to mind, despite the many cousins I have who also might like to have it. But they -- we -- all already have so many of Grandma's dishes and other family treasures that none of us needs this one too. If Joni's into it and I can get it to her safely, it's hers. Not everyone wants plates of this sort, but I have ended up with several, many of which have only sentimental value to me. If y'all like, I could try to get a decent digital photo of it, or maybe even scan it. Kate du Nord http://xoetc.antville.org ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 10 Jul 2006 21:45:49 -0400 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu, Lama" Subject: Hotel California by Barney Hoskyns You could start with Ronstadt's "Heart Like a Wheel" for it's skillful mix of Beatle-esque guitar riffs ("You're No Good") and well written songs which were new to the rock audience (Anna McGarrigle's "Heart Like a Wheel" and Hank Williams "I Can't Help It If I'm Still In Love With You". For many years that woman had *pipes*. She could belt it out and put a growl into it (live too) without burning out. I think Linda has one of the greatest voices of our generation. Little Feat's "Waiting For Columbus" is often called the best live album by a rock band. There was a single-CD version of this title which you could get 2nd hand. Many people would have traded them in on the newer expanded 2-CD edition. Have you ever heard an LA band play a shuffle so funky you want to holler? Can I get a witness? Heck, there's only one degree of separation between the Ronstadt album and "the Feat": she recorded Lowell George's "Willing". Jim L'Hommedieu >I liked this book very much, although I'd have to say that some of the people they talked about in detail I know the names but not the music (like Lowell George and Little Feat I've heard Bonnie Raitt and Linda Ronstadt speak of glowingly but am not familiar with anything they've done other than what those two have covered.> ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Jul 2006 00:42:35 -0400 From: kjhsf@aol.com Subject: Amy Sedaris loves Joni, too Well, we all knew her brother David Sedaris was a Joni fan after reading his Chapter titled "Hejira" from his last book, but it appears Amy from "Strangers with Candy" is also a fan.
