It's yet to be decided whether or not there'll be a video made of this song. I haven't been up in Topsfield since the lovely JoniFest of 2001 that Ashara hosted and I'm looking forward to singing a slew of my new tunes for y'all (plus a healthy smattering of Joni's for sure...) Ashara tells me it's filling up and only 8 or so slots are left, so if you're up for it shoot her an email quick at AsharaJM @ aol.com for a reservation and directions. Hope to see ya! What's got into me? I don't know. But I have a jones to tab a song but didn't want to reinvent the wheel: Does anybody have basic chords or a tab for Marvin's "Trouble Man" which Joni so exquisitely covered on her last tours? If I don't hear from anyone I'm going to have to try it myself (maybe with my brother Jimmy's help). I'm also thinking (i'm always thinking -- unfortunately that's as far as I get), but anyway, I've been thinking about the idea of a guitar site podcast. Excluding any hairy copyright issues, I think it might be fun. I first have to learn how to podcast. Stay tuned ... I might get there in a decade or so. A friend of mine asked me to describe our favorite musician for a book she is writing so I wrote this: Joni Mitchell walks on to the stage like it's her living room. When she picks up the acoustic guitar and starts to play it almost sounds like someone has just thrown a basket of bells down a carpeted flight of stairs. Her lyrics command you to listen. As the story plays out it is perfectly balanced, in meter, rhyme and action, and as she finishes the opus her left hand floats off the strings and into the air like a dove flying after the last notes. As you can tell, I really like her. Then my friend wrote me back and said, that's great Sue, but I meant Patti Witten!!!!!!! :-) sorry Patti, you are certainly a very very close second!!! To my Father's Day post. I was reminiscing and dwelling on my Detroit-Dallas via Nashville trip with my dad - had to be around 1980/81 or so, he was on his way to California for the NAAM Show (He was a rep for Roland back then) and decided to drive with me to Dallas and fly the rest of the way to L.A. from there. As I wrote in my earlier post we stopped to visit with one of Dad's friends, Bucky Barrett and spent a lovely evening having dinner and drinks. I began to wonder what might have become of Bucky so I looked him up on the internet (as you do) and discovered some things. He was a guitar player with Neil Young in the early 1990's for a time and played on "Comes A Time" (http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?z=y&EAN=75992723527&ITM=2) Russ Kunkel and Nicolette Larson were also both credited on that release. Subsequently he is on Neil's "Greatest Hits" (http://music.barnesandnoble.com/search/product.asp?z=y&EAN=93624893523&ITM=1) because of the time he spent with him. I found this particularly interesting because of the recent Nicolette Larson discussions. Wow... an almost brush with fame! Speaking of Russ Kunkel, I just wanted to mention briefly that Kunkel, Doerge, Sklar and Kortchmar were probably the most sought-after studio musicians of their day. They were also doing their own thing and went by the name of "The Section". In 1972 they put out an self-titled L.P. that I bought because I'd seen them tour as Jackson Browne's stage band and I loved them, I had also heard Kunkel drumming on Joni's Ladies of the Canyon, Blue and For the Roses (there may be more but those are the releases that come readily to mind). The Section would occasionally announce impromptu performances of their own and played with a ton of artists such as James Taylor, CSN&Y. Russ produced Jimmy Buffet's 2003 release "Meet Me in Margeritaville" while Lee Sklar shared bass credits with Meshell Ndegeocello on Santana's 2002 release "Shaman". It goes to show that being a "session" musician can bring longevity to one's career, certainly more than being a one-hit-wonder. It's a hell of a spider-web when we put all these musicians together. (I'd love to see it done as an art piece with pins and different coloured string for each artist connecting to each other.) Most of them were in Crosby/Nash's touring band, too. Odd aside- I worked for Doerge's brother (rhymes with 'derby') briefly, who wholesaled motorcycle oil. ------------------------------ End of onlyJMDL Digest V2006 #178 ********************************* ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:onlyjoni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe ------- Siquomb, isn't she?
