I guess joni is best when allowed time to write & edit... >Then, they did "The Thrill Is Gone". He sang the first verse, soloed, and then nodded Joni towards the mic. She looked unsure, and stood back, shaking her head, so he sang again, and next time 'round Joni stepped up and belted this out... The thrill is gone The thrill is gone away The thrill is gone You left me And I hope you DIE A friend of mine was backstage that day, and hung out with Joni later that day, and she said that she had been incredibly nervous before going on with B.B. When he suggested "Thrill", she said, "what am I going to sing? and he said "Why don't you write something from your perspective".< ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Jun 2006 08:12:24 EDT From: Snapple1984@aol.com Subject: Re: The "Joni Standard" I missed the initial posting on this but if the gist of it was that Joni's art pairs artistic creativity with artistic execution, then I agree whole-heartedly. With most of Joni's songs, I heard her version before hearing a cover, and in my opinion, the originals always stand up to the covers - even if the two versions are quite different. Eg, Woodstock - why squabble over which version is better? I enjoy them both, along with Joni's live version on M of A. But it is NOT always the case that the original is as good as the cover - or at least not as catchy, well-sung, well-played or sometimes even heartfelt - that's why people have hits with cover songs. This is some people's problem with Laura Nyro, especially some Joni fans, although again, I heard Laura's versions of all the hits except Stoney End and Wedding Bell Blues - Stoned Soul Picnic, Sweet Blindness, Eli's Coming, And When I Die - first, and I think her versions are as well - if not as slickly - executed as the popular covers. Again, I'm going to make a plug for Linda Ronstadt here because the gal executes like nobody's business. I have many other great things to say about Linda Ronstadt but no one can deny that she can make a song a hit. She has the ability to hear a potential hit - artistically as well as commercially - and take it that extra step. She did this with several of Karla Bonoff's songs - "Someone to Lay Down Beside Me", "Trouble Again", "Lose Again" (I think their versions of "If He's Ever Near" and "All My Life" are pretty comparable, despite the addition of Aaron Neville to the latter). And in many cases, including but not limited to Karla Bonoff, she introduced a more pop-oriented audience to some great composers. I may never have listened to Little Feat or grown to love Lowell George's version of "Willing" if I'd never heard Linda's. But with Joni, all the elements add up. Some people don't like her versions of her own songs because her voice is "too perfect". I have never had an issue with this because I think, maybe because I've heard more of her music than the average person, she uses her voice as its own unique instrument, particularly on later albums. In addition, the richness of her open tunings and complexity of her melodies more than compensates for any lack of intrique in the voice, imho. Happy over the hump day, everybody! Very insightful, beautifully written and lot's of food for thought. I guess I was hungry. :-) I concur! And thanks for reminding me of what a pleasure of Karla Bonoff and Linda's music. I had the good fortune to meet Karla Bonoff with jmdlers Kate and Kakki in Santa Barbara a few years back at a semiprivate concert. She is one of the singer/songwriter greats, as you aptly illustrate. I would resist the urge to characterize how other listeners might regard Joni's musical gifts, though, as that can't be proven. Just a thought. - -Julius - -Julius In a message dated 6/14/06 5:24:06 AM, Snapple1984@aol.com writes: > But with Joni, all the elements add up. There were whisperings that Mitchell didn't want other women on the label. Ironically, she was present at 9130 Sunset the day Sill stopped by to sign her Asylum contract. 'Joni knew who Judee was," says guitarist Art Johnson, who accompanied Sill. 'Let's just say their cautious conversation was memorable.' Joni fans probably won't be happy with this book, which is no better and no worse than others of this genre. She doesn't come across as especially likeable, but neither do David Geffen, David Crosby, Steven Stills and virtually all of The Eagles. There is, however, a great photo of Joni with her arm around Jackson Browne's neck. I had never seen this one before. Furthering the Joni/Judee connection, Judee Sill wrote "Jesus Was A Crossmaker" with the line "He's a bandit and a heartbreaker" about her ex-boyfriend J. D. Souther, who thought Judee was a genius but left her for Linda Ronstadt. J.D. then left Linda supposedly for Joni -- and God only knows who else. By studying musicology, I've been able to devote my life's work to the music of so many wonderful women and men, particularly Joni. Now, I am in the formulating stages of a paper on Laura Nyro (Joni-Thesis will be completed sometime in the next year and hopefully worth the wait). Are there any other Laura Nyro fans out there? I know Joni said once that Laura was one of the few women musicians she felt honored to be compared with/ ranked alongside. Having said all that, does anyone here know of any Laura Nyro footage, aside from the Monterey clips? I managed to find one video of a song, Laura performing on a brightly lit stage. Pictures from this same performance are in the photo archive on lauranyro.net, and I wondered if anyone could tell me the story. Was this a whole concert recorded for television or broadcast on television? Matt J Athens, GA Welcome, Matt! Wow -- a scholarly thesis on Joni? Can't wait to read it! Another jmdler, Karen-Marie from Norway (whom I don't think we have heard from in a while....how are you, Karen? And how is Oddmund? It seems like many dim years ago!) is also writing one. I'm so glad to see scholars starting to write about our Joan. And as far as Laura Nyro goes, all I can say is: PAGING GARY Z! PAGING GARY Z! JMDL! STAT! At the Joni Tribute in NYC in early February, I had le grand plaisir to meet Gary and to break French bread with him in a bistro (along with Donna B. and Cassy and Sherelle, beautiful Joni women all) and this he told me: "I love Laura as much as Joni." I hope you two can connect and share. It would be a rich exchange, seems to me!
