This was the Bread & Roses Festival at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, October, 1980. B.B.'s set was in the middle of the afternoon, with a small band - just himself, a rhythm section, and another guitarist. Near the end of his set, he brought out Joni (it had been previously announced that she was guesting with him, so it wasn't a surprise, just greatly anticipated!). First, they did "Coyote", which was very cool. B.B. was playing these staccato lead lines, unlike anything I'd ever heard him play, or have since. Then, they did "The Thrill Is Gone". He sang the first verse, soloed, and then nodded Joni towards the mic. She looked unsure, and stood back, shaking her head, so he sang again, and next time 'round Joni stepped up and belted this out... The thrill is gone The thrill is gone away The thrill is gone You left me And I hope you DIE It was pretty intense...it really sounded like she was pissed at some guy. I found out later that she had just broken up with Don Alias, so that may have been the impetus. After it was over, B.B. said that it was time for he and the band to go, because they were playing up in Lake Tahoe that night, but that Joni would stick around for a little while. All of us Joni fans were happy to hear that, as 2 songs was just not enough. She got a hollow body electric guitar (a blonde Gretsch, I believe, that was Neil Young's. He had played the night before with the Hawks & Doves band, the only time they did a gig and the only show Neil played in an almost 2 year period), and proceeded to play two brand new songs - "Man to Man" and "You Dream Flat Tires". They were both great, and I have always been kind of disappointed by the album version of "Flat Tires" after hearing that solo version, especially in it's early incarnation. Then she was gone, and I, sitting dead center, about 7 rows back, was reduced to a puddle beneath my seat. Really, it just left my breathless - it was that powerful. I think Tom Paxton was up next, and partway through his set I turned to my friend and said, "Let's go. Nothing else today will be able to compare to what we just saw." He agreed, and we took off. I've always wanted to hear that mini-set since it happened 26 years ago. There was a guy in the row in front of us who was taping, and I asked him if I might be able to get a copy. He said "give me your name and address", but alas, never sent it. I talked to Joel Bernstein once about, since I knew that he is the caretaker of all of Joni's tape archives. He kind of dismissed it as not being a very good performance, and he may be right. Not sure if he'd ever listened to it, or if that was his impression from that day. I'd STILL love to hear it! A friend of mine was backstage that day, and hung out with Joni later that day, and she said that she had been incredibly nervous before going on with B.B. When he suggested "Thrill", she said, "what am I going to sing? and he said "Why don't you write something from your perspective". And there you go..... The only decent track is where Stevie Wonder sings a song Mm no qualms there Stevie Wonder is stevie wonder little to do with Busta Rhymes I mean is it me have I missed something in the evolution of music to where we are now, is this a serious opinion that this Artist is talented to warrant a reviewers "A" in Entertaiment Weekly. Now this is the JoniMitchell digest, you know the best lyric writer in Music history, is there anyone prepeared to say that this artist is talented ???? especially his (Joke) lyric writing as i have highlighted. Sorry I am not fooled even if the masses are. Enjoy it, love it, Dance to it, Play it in your car, but DON"T call it MUSIC. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2006 13:53:05 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Joni & B.B. at Bread & Roses - ----- Original Message ----- From: >> He told a story of being at a festival with Joni, and backstage he >> overheard B.B. The two songs Joni did with BB and his touring band were terrible. Funny you said they were learning the simple "Thrill is Gone", because they didn't learn Coyote at all! The bass player blew every change, they played it like they had never heard it before, or didn't care who this skinny white chick was...a real trainwreck. I would descibe "Thrill" as Joni trying to sing, and BB stepping on her and drowning her out (either vocally or with a guitar lick) every time she opened her mouth. Painful. The solo stuff from WTRF was, as you said, sublime. Also, (was it later that day or a different day?) she came out with Herbie Hancock on the grand piano and sang a version of "Sweet Sucker Dance" that blew away the "Mingus" version. She had the mic in her hand and was leaning against the piano, jazz lounge style. I have never heard of a recording of this-although rumours that B&R has them. I'm sure Joni would never want the BB part to be heard. Also, I must have missed something; what was the source of BB's comments about this day? (Tried a library search, but it wasn't working). Like I said, it may have BEEN bad, but somehow, at the time, and thus in my memory, it was great. I liked both songs. > Also, (was it later that day or a different day?) she came out with > Herbie Hancock on the grand piano and sang a version of "Sweet Sucker > Dance" that blew away the "Mingus" version. That was at the B&R Festival in 1978. Then, in 1979, she played a short set at the Berkeley Jazz Festival, with Herbie, Don Alias, Jaco, and Wayne Shorter. She was the headliner and when she only played 35-40 minutes, people were pissed! Again, I was stunned and thought quality over quantity is fine with me anytime. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2006 17:54:57 -0700 From: "Randy Remote" Subject: Re: Joni & B.B. at Bread & Roses - ----- Original Message ----- From: >> Also, (was it later that day or a different day?) she came out with >> Herbie Hancock on the grand piano and sang a version of "Sweet Sucker >> Dance" that blew away the "Mingus" version. > > That was at the B&R Festival in 1978. It was '80, though she may have done it in '78, too, I didn't see that one. '78 was the one where she was dressed as a cadet, they had a picture of her in Rolling Stone right after. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jun 2006 19:29:48 -0700 (PDT) From: Smurf Subject: Don Knotts, Beside Himself Remember a few years ago when there was talk here about creating a statue of Joni -- tenatively titled "Beside Herself" -- and the project sorta disappeared or ran out of steam after some listers contributed money? Looks like the late Don Knotts isn't going to get a statue either. This is from BoingBoing.com: Plans for Barney Fife statue toppled by Knotts' estate A couple of Barney Fife fans who put down $8,000 to erect a statue of Barney Fife (played by Mick Jagger lookalike Don Knotts) in downtown Mount Airy, NC (the model for Mayberry) received a letter from CBS attorneys telling them to halt the project. [CBS attorney] Mallory Levitt explained to [would-be statue erector Tom] Hellebrand and the Mount Airy News that although Paramount/CBS owned the rights to the character of Barney Fife, the group didn't have the authority to give permission for a likeness of Don Knotts. "That right belongs to the Knotts estate," she said. Levitt told Hellebrand she contacted the actor's estate and business associates of Andy Griffith, and none wanted to go through with the project. The project website, donknottsstatue.com, has a note about the cancellation of the project: "The tears on our pillows bespeak the pain that is in our hearts." The project leaders will be selling a full-size replica of a Mayberry Squad car and a golf cart made to look like a squad car on eBay to recoup their expenses. http://donknottsstatue.com/ - --Smurf . Well, jazz festivals are sometimes like that--many acts with shorter sets. I heard a recording of this performance and thought it was excellent.
