Yes! I had replied earlier to Ashara privately, with very positive interest. (I think I used the term 'ab-sa-friggin-lutely') Some observations: If I am not mistaken, 2007 marks the 10th anniversary year of JMDL. (a moment for a deep breath here, and a huge to bow to Les Irvin (our creator) and Wally and Jim of JoniMitchell.com for the early days. Also, hats off to the secret 'inner circle' whose enormous efforts in driving people off the list and making them feel unwelcome has successfully limited JMDL participation to the paltry thousand souls, and 20 countries, or so, we see today. But I digress. JMDL's 10th makes me feel like we should do something quite right. Secondly, I love Full Moon as a venue. It's about as perfect as I can imagine. I am biased in that I can of course drive to it (and easily lug all my stuff) but for something close to NY/Boston/PhillyAlbany and all that transit, in a beautiful fairly prisitne region, with great kitchen, clean and comfy accommodations and a killer performance space w/ great PA, understanding staff, and total privacy (with a buy-out) this place is quite impossible to beat.. it's just that the dates offered now by FM are troublesome to me. So much so, that I am wondering what people would think about a mid-week session. We have usually run this Wed-Sun, or thereabouts, with some arriving earlier, some staying later. It seems now that Full Moon will not sell us the coveted weekends. I could easily imagine coming up Tuesday-Friday, if it meant getting dates in a better season. I think Ashara said we could get a mid-week booking. I would think September ideal for this region, and my own personal taste in perfect days. Returning home/touching down on Saturday means a Sunday to adequately wind down and rejoin the less-than-phenomenal world. But March sounds like 'bring your snowshoes'. Not to belabor my problem with dates. I'd likely go anyway and dress for sub-arctic conditions...can't imagine a fest without Paz, with his JazzFest conflicts...btw, don't be put off by all his malarkey about excessive partying, I swear, that never happens! (Paz, let's rent some LearJets!) Or is it simply - to paraphrase Democrat apologist James Carville - merely "a oxymoron perpetrated by some regular morons" ? (That was part of a joke then, and part of a joke now). We had so much fun at the NY tribute this year and spending time with all the friends from Jonifest past. I will ply him with zanax and muscle relaxers and then have him say yes. I want the cabin up on the hill next to Jimmy& Ed. I can always come alone and fly back the morning of the 1st. I'm not a performer, so I'll just come "for conversation" and help with the "applause, applause" in the audience. Or maybe you can put me in the freaks & soldiers side show and I'll just sit there getting Joni TICS and weaving Joni lyrics incessantly into pleas for peace. Thanks so much for organizing this! Love, Patti P. P.S. Last night I told my youngest son about the Fest and he gave me the WEIRDEST look that said, wordlessly: "If it isn't bad enough that there is a picture of Joni in an elevator w/ "some random person" on our kitchen wall, now you are going to go meet all these strange people from the internet at some crazy hippie resort?" Judy and Amy ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Jun 2006 18:30:10 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers, Volume 77...it's hard out here for a Covers pimp! And another month gone, another one gone - another one bites the dust...June is bustin' out all over, and to celebrate that, this volume is bustin' out with Joni covers - 23 tracks in all! (And 23 comments for you, Emiliano) All performed with love and respect by a variety of folks across the globe and the ages. Thanks to my good friend Monica across the pond for her contributions to this one. Well, we've got lots to digest, so let's get right to it: 1. Linda Pettersson - All I Want: Another wonderful Euro-jazz cover opens 77 on a very high note. Kicks off with some nice brass, and all the players including Linda turn in a stellar performance including some great soloists. 2. Kenny Davis Road Show - Both Sides Now: Boy, I can't think of anything worse than being called a Neil Diamond wanna-be, but that's the only thing that comes to mid when I hear this 70's cheese-a-rama. 3. Sara Gazarek - The Circle Game: A lovely and different arrangement of this one - I have to unabashedly say that I love it. Sara remains true to the mood of the song but puts her own stamp on it and really makes it her own, with a groove - VERY difficult to do with this one. 4. Corporate Cash Cows - Big Yellow Taxi: Spirited guitar work but the vocals are a bit too strained - maybe they're in the wrong key for this singer or maybe he's just trying to do a Dennis DeYoung/Styx kind of thing, and why would anyone want to do that anyway? 5. Carey Yaruss - River: Another pretty and well-done version of the Blue classic - Carey adds just the right touch of power and emotion to the vocal, and there are great harmonies to boot. Piano and synth-strings add a nice accompaniment. 6. Joey Figgiani - You're So Square (Baby I Don't Care): Tennessee rockabilly singer included this track on his Elvis tribute. 7. Sue Bond - The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: More jazz from down under - Australian jazz singer Sue Bond turns in a fine and fun performance of the playful Mitchell-Mingus composition backed by a nice classic-sounding piano-bass-drums trio. 8. Uncle Seth - Both Sides Now: From 2005 and released by the Canadian band as a CD-single. A rockin' little arrangement, the singer reminds me of Natalie Merchant at times. 9. Tangled Up In Blue - Big Yellow Taxi: Women's acapella from The University of Wisconsin. Another cover of the Counting Crows arrangement, but all Femme this time around and some original flourishes too. Go Badgers! 10. Susie Coles - The Circle Game: It's back to the 70's for this one, Susie plays guitar and sings, and at least she keeps a peppy tempo. Listen closely for some interesting mondegreens too! 11. Maddalena - Willy: I don't know anything about Maddalena, she's shrouded in mystery. But I do appreciate the fact that she chose this oft-neglected LOTC chestnut for her Joni cover - she has a pleasant voice and navigates the high notes pretty well. 12. The Big Wu - Free Man In Paris: Hailing from Minnesota, The Big Wu graces us with a nice live bar-brand version of FMIP. This one will appeal to the deadheads out there, very much in that style. 13. David Lobban - Both Sides Now: a One-a, and a Two-a...this little slice of organ Uber-cheese sounds like something that would play during "couples skate", luckily it was part of a medley (from hell) so I was able to just bring those input levels on down when he segued into "Tie A Yellow Ribbon" or whatever was up next. 14. Jeff Libman - Big Yellow Taxi: Chicago's Jeff Libman is a writer and teacher besides being a singer-songwriter and performer of Joni covers. His BYT features a nice acoustical guitar groove and makes for a nice toe-tapper of a Joni cover. And no shooo-bop-bop-bops which is OK by me too. 15. Divine Brown - Help Me: To answer your first question - no, this is not the same (infamous) Divine Brown who pleasured Hugh Grant in a car a couple of years back, this Divine Brown is the Canadian soul-jazz diva, and this recent recording from her 2005 really kicks it. If you can listen to this one and stay still, you'd better check your pulse. A wonderful performance by Divine, and some great production as well. 16. Clyde High School Acapella Choir - Both Sides Now: I don't know why they call themselves the acapella choir when they're singing to piano accompaniment. And I can close my eyes and see the Miss Gulch-like pianist with her hair in a smart bun. Predictable. 17: The Difference - Carnival In Kenora: Now this one is anything BUT predictable! This comes from a recording made in 1968 at Flay's Steak House in Buffalo, NY - these guys got a hold of Joni's demo recording and created their own lounge arrangement that really swings in a late 60's kinda way. It's cheese, but it's GREAT cheese, with harmonies, backing woo-woo vocals, and superb chunky electric guitar. Words cannot adequately express how much I dig this one. 18. The Bards - The Urge For Going: And here's another piece of obscurity...English folk duo from 1971, sparse sounding with effective simplicity and harmony. 19. Two Tight - Big Yellow Taxi: Another duet, this one from Germany and a bit more recent. Very uptempo and even features some wayout scat singing. Whatever she is on, I'd like to try some. 20. The Lazy Eyes - Eastern Rain: Another one that will have you shaking your head in disbelief (in a cool way). This electronica trip-hoppy version comes from 2004, as opposed to Fairport Convention's cover which came out the same year this singer was born. Features some outstanding production along with a lovely oboe line. The best argument for why all those unrecorded songs should be put in the hands of creative music-makers and just let them go at it. 21. Fred Benedetti - Both Sides Now: A relatively new (2003) and lovely instrumental duo-acoustic guitar version of the franchise song - perfect for wine sipping. 22. The Mike Batt Orchestra - Both Sides Now: I typically don't put BSN's back-to-back, but these two are so night-and-day-ish that I didn't have any problem following one with the other. This one, also an instrumental, comes out of the time machine of 1970, and features some swinging bongos and swirling strings, as well as a "Marlboro Man" electric guitar. 23. Garlic - Night In The City: New folk from The Netherlands with an old-folk feel. Guitar and fiddle accompany the two female vocalists in their harmonic round style. And thus we come to the end of yet another amazing volume of Joni covers - and no it's not a double-CD set, due to the magical nature of Joni covers I was able to wedge them all on a single disc, which you can make for yourself by checking out this link: (So big I had to split it up...)
