I remember acquiring them from some kind soul on the Fairport list and sending them over to Bob not long after I first joined the JMDL. I know it has been said many times before but what an extraordinary thing Bob's 'Covers Project' has turned out to be. Respect!! I've also just got hold of a copy of Joe Boyd's brand new autobiography, "White Bicycles". Unfortunately I can't find any direct references to Joni and Fairport, although I know that they did appear together at The Royal Festival Hall with several other artists - including Jackson C Frank, Al Stewart (interesting sync, Bob) and The Johnstons (with Paul Brady) in a concert called 'The Festival Of Contemporary Song' on Sept 28, 1968. "White Bicycles" only contains a couple of Joni references. When talking about The Incredible String Band's album "The 5000 Spririts Or The Layers Of The Onion", Boyd writes: > I sent a copy to the Newport Folk Festival committee, > who immediately invited them to the 1967 New Folks > concert along with Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. > The Americans regarded them with amazement. Of the songs in Part 2 - I really enjoyed Wynonna's Help Me (I had heard that one from the JM tribute) and two others that I had not heard before - Barbara Streisand's cover of "I don't know where I stand" and Betty Buckley's version of "I had a King". I have never heard anyone cover either of those songs before. I expected that Barbara Steisand's version would be very good and it was - she and Katie Lang have to have two of the prettiest voices I have ever heard. But I had never heard of Betty Buckley before so I looked her up on the internet and I see she is an actress and a Tony Award winner. Does anyone else cover "I had a king"? Personally, I have always found that an incredibly powerful song..............................................Stewart - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This e-mail message (including attachments, if any) is intended for the use of the individual or entity to which it is addressed and may contain information that is privileged, proprietary , confidential and exempt from disclosure. Wynonna did "Raised on Robbery" with Bryan Adams and "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio". If you're talking about another tribute - let me know! You can go to: http://www.jonimitchell.com/undercover/ and do a search on any song title, and it will bring up a listing of all of the covers of that tune. Les has done an amazing job of formatting the site to make these searches E-Z. And if you do check out "I Had A King", you'll see that it's been covered 9 times (to the best of my researching ability), by such folks as Adrienne Barbeau (from Maude), Gail Martin (Dean's daughter), and Turid (Swedish language version). Buckley's recording is really beautiful...she does an excellent River as well. If anyone else missed digest #182, it's at: http://www.smoe.org/lists/joni/v2006.n182 It seems like I'm missing about one per week lately. Is this happening to anyone else? Jim PS, this is an old one. It's so old, I first heard Howey Mandel tell it... When he had hair. "Two guys walk into a bar... Which is pretty stupid, because... ya know, you'd think the second guy would have noticed." ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 May 2006 03:40:40 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: sjc, an armload of bright (anti-war) balloons Meine Joni Liebchens: Whoa there, brothers and sisters....everyone is writing so much good stuff and I can't possibly keep up! "I'm always running behind the times" in digest reading yet again -- don't you HATE that? I'm just popping in to share an email I received today. I had written to a friend about the armload of bright balloons I bought for Michael's graduation. Ray knows some Joni, but he needs a lot more jonifying, imo. Look at this, though (pasted below)....he's coming along! I thought the lyrics he sent were worth sharing. There's even some German here for Moni! Liebe grusse, Patti P., who firmly believes that if more Americans learned about other languages and cultures, it would help the cause (which, of course, is world peace). Voila: >Last evening I came home with "an >armload of bright balloons" What, no "Love or Money"? I made a different (anti-war, even ) connection with balloons. Here's one for you, and I'll give you the lyrics, too. There was an American version (not quite a translation), "99 Red Balloons", but the imagery isn't as powerful. You and I in a little toy shop Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got.
