(and mike in barcelona chopped it up) >>I had all but forgotten Al Stewart; ...Thanks to some compilation CD's from Mike in Barcelona, I was reminded how much I liked his sound; his unique tenor, his clear and fluid acoustic guitar playing, and his unique lyrical pattern. He writes mid-tempo folk rock and commonly injects themes of European history, sometimes using historical events as a metaphor for personal relationships. ...So when I read that he was coming to The Handlebar on April 26, I thought 'why not', and it was in fact the first time he had played Greenville. ..His show was totally spontaneous, playing mostly off audience requests. The atmosphere was very intimate and even conversational at times. His one-of-a-kind voice still sounds exactly the same as it did when I first heard it 30 years ago, though he has lost a note or two on the top end. "On The Border" was melodically reworked so that he didn't have to tackle the bridge's high notes, but this isn't a complaint - he sounded great, and the only acoustic player I've seen with more mastery is Richard Thompson (who he talked about working with back in the 60's). Roads To Moscow, Time Passages, Life In Dark Water, Palace of Versailles were some of the highlights - he reinvented Year of the Cat, giving it a Heard It Through the Grapevine intro and closing and shifting the rhythm a bit. What made each song even more enjoyable was the introduction/explanation he gave with intelligence and humor.<< Al Stewart, of course, played at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1970, although I can't now recall if it was the same day as Joni. For logistic reasons the festival was run on an alternating 'electric band, acoustic band' model; allowing time to move the amps etc for the electric sets while the acoustic sets took place. Given the chaos which took place for various reasons, Al was delayed, rescheduled, almost cancelled, then was finally given a reduced set, reduced to one song, in fact. He explained this to the audience to wide booing, then introduced the name of the song he was going to do. It was 'Love Chronicles' and if anyone out there in Joniland knows nothing of this song, it is a magnificent song which lasts about 15 minutes and is almost, as the title suggests, an epic song describing his love affairs from his first, 'Stephanie' and subsequent lovers. Wonderful. There are many re-issues of Al Stewart CDs but most of them are post 'Cat' period. I would like to hear his earlier songs again, such as 'In Brooklyn', 'Richard Foster', and more. Thanks for the memory Bob. mike in the mud near the big red balloon.... ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 07:04:48 EDT From: StDoherty@aol.com Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2006 #125 Glad to see For the Roses get it's props. This album has always been a favorite. I thought that You Turn Me On I'm a Radio was a perfect single - especially for the times, but not a good sample from this masterpiece. By the time I got this album I was a committed Joni fan. I got Blue in 71 as a Christmas gift and as funds allowed (but pretty quickly)added Clouds and Ladies of the Canyon to my collection. For the Roses came at a perfect time - and since I had no money at the time - a girlfriend gave it to me as a very early Christmas present. I'm surprised that this album doesn't get the recognition that Blue and Court and Spark get. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 07:42:18 -0400 (EDT) From: "Gerald A. Perhaps > some people can't take the ballsyness but got used to it by Court & > Spark which is why take takes the award. I think 'For the Roses' is Joni's emergence from the emotional crisis she commemorated so beautifully on 'Blue'. Yes the vulnerability is still there but she also makes it clear that she's a survivor and she's not going to crumble. I don't think we have heard her emotions so raw and transparently on display since 'Blue'. She's grown up on FTR. Yes, the songs are beginning to acquire some muscle. 'Banquet' sets the tone with it's observations about some turning to heroin, some watching the paint peel off and then she goes right in to 'Cold Blue Steel and Sweet Fire', one of her most powerful songs ever, imo. 'Woman of Heart and Mind' is a declaration, stating her strength and intelligence, her perceptiveness and ability to detect falseness and self-centeredness in her lovers. But she also says 'I'll try to be there for you when your spirits start to sink'. The heart is still there. But don't you dare discount the mind and its formidable powers of observation and analysis. 'Lesson in Survival' - I think the word 'survival' in that title is very significant. The album's title - I am strong enough to compete in the 'cesspool' (word she uses in later references to the music business, not from FTR) and run for the roses. And she will go on to win many artistic victories as the mama lion springs from album to album, courageously following her own muse and leaving the fragile girl with the guitar far behind. Jamie, you mentioned you wish you could have heard the live performance of the orchestral version of 'Judgement of the Moon and Stars'. I was among the lucky ones who saw Joni with the orchestra on the 'Both Sides Now' tour at the Concord Pavillion. This was one of the encores they performed after doing 'BSN' in sequence in its entirety. It was stunning. One of the wonderful things about that concert was seeing Joni sing without a guitar in her hands or sitting at a piano. She was so expressive with her hands and body language. I have always been fascinated by her performances of 'Goodbye Porkpie Hat' and 'Dry Cleaner from Des Moines' on the Shadows and Light video for this very reason. I think singing without her hands being occupied with playing an instrument must have been new to her then. She seems a bit tentative but there is a natural born actress in her and it is beautiful to watch her express the song with her entire body. I never knew there were Joni DVDs and gold CDs and all this stuff. I've been shltered. I have a Joni bootleg that I haven't played in 30 years and probably never will until they re-invent the turntable. Anyway, I think For the Roses was my first Joni album, and then Blue and then Ladies and then Clouds and then Song to a Seagull (for a seagull?) which I bought only out of a sense of duty and obligation. But as I was looking through the tracks just now I recall a lot of the songs fondly, like Michael from Mountains. I think it was 1973, but I could be wrong. Then Court and Spark came out and she was discovered, but then the Hissing of Summer Lawns was released and people didn't seem to like it, even though it's one of my favorites. But I will always love For the Roses. I think of Woman of Heart and Mind a lot. Maybe I saw myself in it. But I think it's one of her best, along with Blue and Hejira. And The Hissing of Summer Lawns. Love The Boho Dance. I see people doing that dance every day and they can't break out. It can be a killer. Anyway, nice to know there are others out there. Steve BTW: On the issue of bootlegs, I heard a Joni bootleg from some cafe over the radio on Thanksgiving, probably 1979. It was done in the early 60s, and it had a song on it that I know was recorede by someone else (it was familiar) but that Joni wrote. But never recorded. (Obviously, because I would have bought it.) Not much to go on, but does anybody have the remotest clue of the what the heck I'm talking about? ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Apr 2006 21:22:07 -0400 (EDT) From: "Gerald A. When you said you bought the first 2 albums 'out of duty' I kinda know what you mean, since her music got more interesting with every release. The bootleg you describe...I'm thinking it might be the 2nd Frets tapes-very early recording (Philly I think?), she did alot of songs that she never recorded, including Eastern Rain that I think was done by Fairport Convention. Others here know the whole scoop, but that's the only era I can think of where she performed songs that ended up being done by others. I think you can get it on bit torrent or something...dudes, help me out... Great post and I hope when they re-invent the turntable, it will read with a laser.
