Just skimming email these days, except the work kind... MUSIC: So, I'm totally hooked on the Natasha Bedingfield song "Unwritten." Also liking KT Tunstall's "Black Horse and the Cherry Tree." JONI: Noticed this month's Town & Country has an article about the history of songs. Includes a photo of Joni and a mention of Joni's "Amelia." Check it out if you get the chance. POLITICS: Happened to sit next to a recently retired Under Secretary of Defense on a plane ride from D.C. to Boston last week. I'm always amazed to find the common ground, even if politics differ. We started talking about art and sailing - found lots to share there. Even though we differed on some things (we only talked domestic issues, not foreign policy), both listened as much as we talked. Interesting, stimulating conversation... Maybe that's not really entirely possible online??? And, hey Paz, are you doing the Jazz Festival this weekend? Have fun if you are! Back to work and lurkdom. lots of love, Anne ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Apr 2006 15:02:59 +0100 From: "Jamie's Box of Paints" Subject: Blonde in the Bleachers I was listening to this on headphones today and I was wondering if anyone else has heard the clinking at the start of this track. It's during the piano intro... was she wearing wooden bangles? Were her dentures coming unstuck? Was she kissing James Taylor? ;o) Heh heh bored at work np: blonde in the bleachers - -- I am a lonely Painter I live in a Box of Paints I'm frightened by the devil But I'm drawn to those ones that 'aint afraid... Maybe you're listening at a higher fidelity than I am and maybe it's her fingernails on the piano keys? I do hear the fingernails on the guitar sounds on some of her other songs. And speaking of BITB, listen to the ending...after the 2:00 minute mark, it sounds like it belongs on HOSL. In any event, thanks for the listening suggestion - BITB is a beautiful song, and like many of these lovely FTR songs has been sadly neglected. David Lahm did a nice instrumental, but the only vocal versions are the BIZARRE Lou Barlow (from Sebadoh) & Squiddly (from the Canadian 'Back To The Garden' trib) versions. I did notice that the piano intro is similar in pacing & structure to Judgement of the Moon & Stars though. Joni's piano just has some kind of sound quality to it that I never hear anywhere else...maybe it's her chord structures, I dunno. Can anyone help me figure out what the correct sequence of songs for the ENTIRE set list to Shadows And Light (SAL) would be? On the DVD (which I have), this is the set list: (1) Intro (2) In France They Kiss On Main Street (3) Edith And The Kingpin (4) Coyote (5) Free Man In Paris (6) Goodbye Pork Pie Hat (7) Jaco's Solo: The High And The Mighty/Third Stone From The Sun (8) The Dry Cleaner (From Des Moines) (9) Amelia (10) Pat's Solo (11) Hejira (12) Black Crow (13) Furry Sings The Blues (14) Raised On Robbery + Intro To The Band (15) Why Do Fool's Fall In Love (16) Shadows And Light The CD set list is: Disc 1: (1) Introduction (2) In France They Kiss On Main Street (3) Edith And The Kingbird (4) Coyote (5) Goodbye Pork Pie Hat (6) The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines (7) Amelia (8) Pat's Solo (9) Hejira Disc 2: (1) Black Crow (2) Don's Solo (3) Dreamland (4) Free Man In Paris (5) Band Introduction (6) Furry Sings The Blues (7) Why Do Fools Fall In Love (8) Shadows And Light (9) God Must Be A Boogie man (10) Woodstock So here's the problem. . . . On the DVD version of SAL, there are some songs that are not on the CD i.e. "Raised On Robbery + Intro To The Band", "Jaco's Solo: The High And The Mighty/Third Stone From The Sun" and "Don's Solo". Conversely, there are a few songs on the CD version that are not on the DVD i.e. "Dreamland", "God Must be A Boogie man" and "Woodstock". BTW, it seems to me that the last two songs are encores to the concert, correct?? So, how does one reconcile these differences? This is driving me nuts. If one wanted to reconstruct the ENTIRE concert from both the DVD & CD sources, what would be the ENTIRE set list and what would the correct order of tracks be? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. I guess I'm not really sure why this inconsistency between the audio/LP/CD release and the film is such a problem. I've always been able to enjoy both the audio and the video on their own separate terms. Maybe you know that both the album and the film were the result of a 5-concert stint at the Greek theatre in LA and a show in Santa Barbara, and the resulting albums and film is a combination of more than one show. She also performed "Last Time I Saw Richard" as an encore at some of those '79 shows, and they did "Big Yellow Taxi" as well. Neither is included on the CD/DVD. All that being said, there was a definite pattern to the setlists for that tour. I'll look over a couple of complete '79 shows I have and let you know what those setlists are. You'll want to avoid me since I am the biggest jerk in the JMDL. We also need to distinguish ourselves to protect your reputation. I got zinged today for being a member of the clergy who is most unhappy with being accused of wanting to celebrate the death of a human being (if you saw the immortal 'you all want to dance on the grave on a human being because of political differences' thread). So you can be Vince and I will got back to my original JMDL name, (theRev)Vince which was somehow cool in 1998, not at all cool now, but then, neither am I. You will love this place. It is a great community. Anything music you'll find here and some of the most generous and loving people, it is an amazing group of people and long after everything about Joni has been said, these people will still hang together, loving her music and loving each other. You've got a great place to belong. Now, for me, I am going to look for obscure Bob Dylan songs and head for the cemetary...
