No, not my comments. I don't think the sound is dated at all and still listen, regularly, to DED in my rotation. Dog Eat Dog could never be considered Joni's greatest musical achievment by any means but there will always be a warm place in my heart for this album no matter how many years go by. This is a searchable archive of every word ever written on the JMDL. Many people helped with the project (you'll find their names at the link) but I'd like to give a special thanks to Cassy for her tireless effort towards the completion of the massive project. The archive is here: http://jmdl.com/archives/ Please note that this archive will not be linked to nor indexed by any search engine. I'd like to keep it known mainly just to JMDL members. We are still missing a few digests from 1997. If anyone has the missing information, I'd love to hear from you! I agree and will add I feel the same about all of her Geffen albums. I could never put those four up with her 70s output, but taken on their own merit, what they are rather than what they are not, I find that there is some excellent music (and lyrics, of course) that has aged just fine for me. I finally got the box around this time last year (having bought the vinyl when they were originally released, but not having played them in years), and found it a joy to hear them again. DED: I was expecting it to sound dated and to not like it as much as I had in the 80s, but I think it's lasted fine. Sure, the technology "dates" it in that you can place some of the sounds, but it's pretty rare that's not true with any album, including acoustic recordings. What's a hippie? A long haired person who takes drugs? (Hell's Angels, obviously not). A long- haired peace activist back to the lander? (Amish, no). It's like when they added 'nik' to the Beats-to associate them with communists (Sputnik etc). It's a catch-all label that means nothing. imo. As to what happened to those in the so-called 'counter-culture', sure, some became lawyers, some became drunks, some pioneered free clinics, started gay and female liberation movements, some went back to the land, you name it. Some ex-cokeheads became President, but you can't really generalize. Certainly all ex-cokeheads didn't do that. There are still pockets of 'counter-culture' in many places- Vermont, N. Cal., etc Wavy Gravy is celebrating his 70th birthday soon with a benefit show at the Berkeley Community Theatre (where Joni has performed). There's an ex "hippie" who has devoted his life to philanthropy.
