I agree. In that area, to my ear, he was to Joni a bit of what George Martin was to the Beatles. The brilliance of her recordings between Clouds and WTRF was astounding - and her recordings before and after that period did not achieve as high a technical quality, IMO (largely for lack of brilliance and clarity). Bob M continued: "It's funny, when I mention him as an integral part of those 70's albums, people just say "who?" " But not we JMDLer's (does that mean we are a higher life form than 'people' ?) Ric,I would not recommend its reading since it is basically a collage of interviews and a collection of the most common trivia... For instance, he likes playing the game of attributing this or that other song to Mr X or Y... Further I would not cite Mr. Bego among writers... I think we've sold only a few...where are all the Joni fans?? Anyway, in answer to your question, has anyone read it? Not yet. I've had it at home, stared it down, the book stared back, but I just could not get into it. Perhaps it is because everything I've ever wanted/needed to know about Joni can be found in the wealth of information on the Joni Mitchell/JMDL web site. As regular listers are probably aware, my wife Robin Adler and myself front an all-Joni show -"The Songs of Joni Mitchell"- that has now played several times in our area, each time to a sold-out room and wild ovations. We normally do the show as a five-piece but can also do it with just the two of us. We (Robin and I) are planning a road trip from San Diego to Vancouver B.C this September and would rent a van and bring music gear if there was an opportunity to play for some Joni fans along the way. Are there any of you on the west coast who would like to host a house-concert or one in some other venue? When the CD is 14 tracks and over an hour, it's a major bonus. And finally, and most importantly, when the song selections are unpredictable, the arrangements original and the caliber of talent as high as they are on this collection, it is sublime, as good as it gets. I've been enjoying this Ian Shaw CD for a couple of weeks now, thanks to the good folks at Linn Records who sent me a promotional copy. I was already familiar with Ian's voice and original style as he's done several other Joni songs in his career. For those of you who do not know his work, the closest comparison is Al Jarreau, with some Seal thrown into the mix. But at the end of the day, Ian is Ian and you can just feel him pouring himself into these songs, accompanied by stellar musicians who approach Joni's compositions with a similar passion. The arrangements (by Shaw & Janette Mason, who also plays piano) are fresh and original, an important issue when you're including some of the old standbys like Both Sides Now, A Case Of You, River, and Chelsea Morning. All of these catch a fresh spark from the arrangements and the variety of musical colors that Ian and producer Richard Cottle bring to the project; lots of piano and guitar, with accents of strings, brass, percussion, and even guest vocals by Claire Martin (who duets on Night Ride Home) & Lea De Laria (Harlem in Havana). While Ian's vocals are rightfully in the spotlight, there are numerous instrumentalists who also get to strut their stuff and it helps make EVERY track a standout, trumpet on Talk To Me, acoustic bass on Night Ride Home, Shorter-like soprano sax flourishes in River, percussion and strings intro to Barangrill, and so on. Adding to the joy for me is hearing so many seldom and never-covered Joni songs; Barangrill, Harlem In Havana, Stay In Touch, Talk To Me, Love Or Money, Edith and the Kingpin and others. Just as he does with Joni's "standards" Ian and company bring a unique and magical touch to all of these tracks. All he needs is two more songs and he's got a "Sweet 16" all on his own... Go get it here: http://www.linnrecords.com/cd_information/full_album_listing_artist.asp?ArtistID=124 And don't forget his concert this Saturday night in London: http://www.thebloomsbury.com/events/show.php?run=000912 Bob NP: Ben Folds, "Gracie" Tired of spam? I learned some stuff about how Joni works. My favorite 10 Joni albums overlap with the period when Henry Lewy was engineering. I knew he was important to the whole process but now it's concrete. More than anyone else I can think of, he was in the room when the mojo was woik'in. He had the good sense to "just stand back and let it all be" as Springsteen said. To Mr. Lewy: "You did some supernaturally great work. You've earned your rest. Thanks." Amen, Jim L'Hommedieu In BAM, Blair Jackson said, >The first Lewy-Mitchell collaboration was 'Clouds,' and since those innocent first days, the two have worked on eleven other albums that have taken each of them through innumerable changes in musical styles from folk-rock through Mitchell's abstract jazz explorations.> RR recommended, > From the archives- Here's a great BAM interview with Henry Lewy from 1983, around the time WTRF came out. http://www.jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=590 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2006 21:06:52 -0700 From: "Lindsay Moon" Subject: Henry Lewy Dies Did anyone notice on the joni.com website that Henry Lewy, Joni's longtime engineer, died on April 8th? I did a search on Google Images for him because I have no idea what he looked like and his life came right up . Leonard Cohen album covers, Joni album covers, etc. Maybe that's all he wanted us to know about him. Sorry to hear of his passing. Poor Joni is losing a lot of her close friends, John Guerin, Don Alias, now Henry.
