There was a star studded audience for a small show that Joni did at The Fez in NYC. The Fez was Joni's (and my) favorite spot but is now unfortunately closed. Chrissie was whistling, stomping, screaming because Joni is her idol and live appearance from her so rare. Someone from Carly's table said something about how disturbing she was and Chrissie said something derogatory about Carly's talent as compared to Joni's. Reportedly Carly acted with her usual classy demeanor and just quietly agreed with Chrissie that Joni was a supreme talent. Chrissie was souting things like 'You go girl!' etc etc while Carly was asking her to be quiet and finally 'mounted her like a telegraph pole' and pretended to choke her... In 1992 I wrote a course book called "Songwriting Skills" for a community college songwriting class I was teaching and drew the bulk of my examples of great lyric writing from Joni and Andy Partridge (of XTC). A song like "Electricity" is the perfect example of exploring an extended metaphor in a lyric. I imagine joni to be an independent (politically speaking) Kate >Hi Rick, I don't know about a "concert" but I have read and heard that she sometimes gets up impromptu and sings in small cafes in town. As for the rest, I find it surprising - although she is quite the raconteur in a small crowd and maybe just was having fun. I wouldn't worry, though, because she previously nicked Bush in an article around the time of the last election. Maybe she didn't care for Kerry, either ;-) Kakki< ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2006 08:14:35 -0800 (PST) From: GreggCagno Subject: Willy the Shake http://www.marriedtothesea.com/021306/got-to-get-paid.jpg :) _____________________________ Gregg Cagno greggno@pobox.com www.greggcagno.com ______________________________ "They've monitored your brain, you say And changed you with religion" - -Joni Mitchell - --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. I thought you should know, since I represent the department. Unfortunately there will be no Joni music. Best Suki ***************** (Suki is the grad student who had Joni's "Love" playing as she walked down the wedding aisle, and later told Joni about it at the Hammerstein Theater, when Joni said "it's a hard hard road to travel". I've invited Suki to join the list but she's too busy w/ frivolous things like writing her dissertation and teaching dance and raising her child.) Love, Patti P., recovering (yawning all day) from a late game and loss last night....yeah Mack, the refs....what's that bumper sticker about mean people? (Only kidding, I know, I know....sour grapes because I lost my Husky heart....) P.S. All of your lists are sooo interesting! I am constantly amazed and enriched by all the knowledge here....names that are new to me (lovely landscapes to discover) and names that are old and bring me back to h.s. and college. You may remember that I posted something to the list a year or so ago about this fellow, Michael Angell, who performed some beautiful Joni covers at an event in Saskatoon, as part of a concert that was broadcst on CBC radio. In particular, I recall that he performed an amazing rendition of Sweet Bird on solo piano, complete with his own (?) transcription. I glanced through my junk mail messages this evening, only to find a message from Angell's PR people, directing me to his new website, where lo and behold, you may hear some longish snippets of some of his Joni covers. I recommend Urge and River in particular. Note the piano transcription on River. I hope we hear more from this fellow.
