I'm not too sure when, or if the producers would need Joni's permission (i guess they don't because no one owns copyrights for his life story), but i know that Joni's story should be much more interesting than Cash's. I mean, not only would it be a chance to rediscover the era of so called 60's revolution thru the eyes of a woman with an amazing childhood and youth, then a woman and an artist involved with some pretty interesting figures of that time, but also the story of Joni and her daughter alone is much more than good enough for a feature film, don't you think? Last Sunday the interviewee for this long running radio programme was Renee Fleming, the opera singer. One of the 8 songs she chose for her desert island was her own jazzy version of "River". She told the interviewer how nervous she had been about what Joni would think of her cover, and how truly relieved she was when she was told by a friend who had played it for Joni, that she liked it. It was very clear what a great fan Renee is, how she really felt intimidated by "the great Joni Mitchell". At the end of the programme she had to choose one of the 8 records that she would choose to keep if the rest were flooded away, and she said something like: "I find it impossible to choose one singer as best singer. So it will have to be Joni Mitchell, I'll take River, but sung by Joni Mitchell herself." So the way I understood her was: as a classically trained singer she could not choose one other classical singer to listen to all the time, but she wanted to take Joni because that was more than just "singing", it was the whole package of words and music and personality. Waiving as I'm sailing by! Lieve in London. PS Covers Bob, I guess you have Renee's River already? ______________________________________________________________ This message may contain privileged information. Hello sweet Bree, If a movie is ever made about Joni, not documenrty, but a feature one with a plot that has to be made and solved, i don't think that it will revolve around Joni's music. Surely, the music would probablly be there all the way, but being a playwright, i can sense that the story of Joni and Kilaurent is one of those things that a script writer/director/producer would'nt resist. That can lead to a very soap-operatic sort of film, and in order to avoid it, i guess the script would have to follow "The dark years" of Kilaurent, plus, maybe, one or two of her scandals, and maybe the fact the meanwhile Joni was busy in her career and men. Another film might choose to tell another story. Since Joni has retired, and no matter how pleased or happy she may be, i feel that there's something tragic going on in her life. I mean, compared to her earlier years, when she was full of creative energy. The choice of an artist to "leave it all behind" is a story, and can suit a movie. I think most of us can't imagine anyone playing Joni at the movies. Maybe because we know her too well. It's going to be really hard finding the right actress to play the young Joni and maybe easier with the older Joni. And if it won't come from the California movie industry, then no doubt the Candian one will eventualy create a film about Joni. I love Canadian movies - do you?:) And we shouldn't worry if it is attempted and tried. I for one am much more worried about Joni fading away slowly in the future, and like she wrote about her cat in Man from Mars - get "Swallowed by the dark". I will be very surprised, to say the least, if a movie about Joni will not hit the screens, sometime, maybe far away from here and now. Love, Nuri - --------------------------------- New Yahoo! Overall ..I liked the movie..and > thought the two stars > did some awesome acting. I totally enjoyed "Walk the line." In fact, it gave me a new appreciation for Johnny Cash and June Carter and I've since listened to a lot more of their music than I ever did, especially John's. I'm sure it's a load of bollocks as far as being their true story, but as a *story*, it was enjoyable. It's difficult doing true biographies anyway. Everyone has a different take on what the truth of a situation is and it's all coloured by memory (or lack thereof.) And then again, you've got to take out all the boring bits and just include the exciting stuff and then, for the sake of continuity, they often combine several events into one because it makes for better drama. > I can't imagine anyone playing Joni..much less > singing her songs..and then > playing her songs on guitar or piano. > > Any attempt would surely fall way way short. I particularly like: "I'd like to call back summer time, and have her stay for just another month or so" This is how I feel right now - and every year when I realise that the cooler months are bearing down on us. Speaking of Melbourne and weather, we could hum every song referring to each of the seasons because, as every Australian knows, only Melbourne can boast four seasons in one day! But you are right Mark about the C'wealth Games - Melbourne has really turned it on.
