I'm not sure it's necessarily the best idea to introduce people to her work with a smorgasbord of her entire career. I think most people have to get into it through the more accessible stuff first and then branch out into some of her more esoteric stuff - maybe I'm wrong, just a thought. Also, I notice there's a tendency around here for people to look down on those who didn't like Joni's later stuff. Well, I don't think being a Joni fan has to be an all-or-nothing thing. Wouldn't you rather introduce someone to Joni 1967-1976 than have them never hear her at all? I don't know if I'm alone in this but it's true that I tend to like the folkier sounding material over the jazzier material (please, don't stone me!) I mean, you should just keep in mind people's personal preferences when compiling a mix cd for them. I've been a Linda Ronstadt fan longer than a Joni Mitchell fan (I don't know how that's perceived around here) so I'm better versed in her entire career. But if I were making a Linda Ronstadt sampler for my parents for example, I would leave out Mad Love because I dont' think they'd be too into New Wave. I'd probably also leave out the Mexican songs. If I were making it for myself, (doesn't make much sense, I know) I'd go heavey on the early country/folk-rock stuff and light on a lot of the 80s stuff. The average person would probably want 70s hits. Anyhow, just a thought. Les - I'd love to help with the project. I guess you solved your jmdl issues. Just wanted to offer up that the last time someone was dissing Joni's later material, they were found hanging from their toes from a huge old oak tree in South Carolina or somewhere. And I do believe they were tarred and feathered (and not the pretty feather like Jimmy S likes. Some old buzzard feathers) Them Joni folk can be a might mean and ornery. Nice to hear from you... Just a couple of responses to your post: You're very correct in saying that it's important to keep your audience in mind when making a sampler of any kind. I've been doing them for awhile now and usually am not too far off the mark. If I was trying to turn someone on to Joni and they were a "girl with guitar" kind of person, I definitely would steer clear of some of the glossier and less acoustic stuff. I don't think you're as correct with your statement about us "looking down on those who don't like Joni's later stuff", all of have been pretty honest about our likes & dislikes and while it typically generates some discussion I don't see anybody being belittled in any way. Plenty of people here don't care for anything after Blue! Others like the 80's stuff the best. The variety makes it interesting. Making a Linda Ronstadt compilation of hits would be easy as she had them. Joni only had one top ten hit in her career, and only a couple others even remotely called hits so it's a bigger challenge. Besides, unless the recipient of the compilation is new to music in general, they're going to be familiar with what the radio had played and not that into it. So the challenge is to go for the deep tracks and show them that there's a lot more to Joni than BSN and BYT and Help Me. Keep the posts coming... I wallowed in those albums--though I guess the same could be said for Blue (16 springs and 16 summers gone then).
