A guy named Bob (coincidence) turned me on to DJRD on a long trip home from Boulder to NY in the summer of 1980 or 81. I was in a sans-Joni phase, fresh off a 5-week workshop with the band Oregon, taking master classes with Ralph Towner and Paul McCandless, having some reckless affairs, etc. -- I was only 23! Cotton Avenue was a REVELATION with the sun coming up over the flat midwest -- it wasn't sunrise and it wasn't city but the landscape was electric and alive because of the song. It was hot and we had the little Celica's windows wide open the volume cranked really loud, so loud it thumped in your chest. That was to be an indelible moment for me, symbolic of adventure and freedom. DJRD gave that adventure some class! Btw I absolutely despise the house music used in gyms and wherever workouts are practiced. Too loud, too clumsy, no depth, no words. And when I told you to go soak your head, I didn't mean for you to spend all your spare time in the pool, but glad that you're doing that too. Secondly, regarding the "Sweet Sixteens"...yes, I did assemble a Volume 3 as a giveaway for those attending Jonifest 2004. The tracklist is/was: 1. Diana Krall - Black Crow 2. Karrin Allyson - Help Me 3. Jibe Project - Chelsea Morning 4. Holly Near/Cris Williamson - Tea Leaf Prophecy 5. Don Conoscenti - River 6. Azure McCall - Shades of Scarlett Conquering 7. Jacqui Dankworth - Man From Mars 8. Catherine Moon - The Beat of Black Wings 9. Max Leake - Both Sides Now 10. The Uptown Trio - Song For Sharon 11. Bill Lancton - Woodstock 12. Danilo Perez - The Fiddle And The Drum 13. Terri Lyne Carrington - Ethiopia 14. The Fourth Stream - In France They Kiss On Main Street 15. Fabio Ranza & Elisabetta Zamberlan - Moon At The Window 16. K.D. Lang - Jericho I like your idea of "re-releasing" these via the You-send-it method...maybe Mark Leon-Thorne can create some nice insert artwork for them as well. I'll try and put this one out in cyberspace to download today, and will follow with the other 2 volumes as time allows this week. Thirdly, regarding your Joni sampler - certainly there are lots of ways to go, here's one that pulls a track from everything except for Blue, MoA & BSN: Night In The City That Song About The Midway Conversation Barangrill Down To You Harry's House/Centerpiece Black Crow Jericho The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines Hejira (Shadows & Light) Be Cool Dog Eat Dog Beat Of Black Wings (I would avoid Dancin' Clown...) Two Grey Rooms Magdalene Laundries Harlem In Havana Dawntreader (Travelogue) And yes, these will all fit on one CD, right at about 79 minutes. I may just burn this sampler for myself! Fourthly, let me know what your new phone # is. Fifthly, degrees of separation between Don Knotts & Joni... -Knotts starred on the Andy Griffith Show -The Dillards (bluegrass band) made several appearances on Andy Griffith -The Dillards recorded Bob Dylan's "One Too Many Mornings" -Bobby D. recorded Joni's Big Yellow Taxi Sixthly, I'm proud to announce that I have hit the #2000 mark in Joni Undercover. I'd like the CD to contain > songs that'll make him think, "Wow! I'm surprised > that's a Joni song!" I've been thinking of doing this for my best friend, who still can't stand Joni because I played Miles of Aisles and Court and Spark endlessly (apparently) when we were roommates some 25 years ago. In the past couple years though, she heard something off the BSN album or one of the more recent ones, with Joni's deeper voice, and thought she'd give Joni another chance. Sadly, she got the Hits and Misses CD or something, and was lost to Our Joan again. I'd like to compile a tape of songs for my friend; wonder if anyone would have ideas what songs might not offend her anti-soprano ear. She is a lover of the Cowboy Junkies (a band that I dislike, something to do with their timing, which I could never put my finger on) ... anyway, your suggestions would be most welcome. Muller also said: > Secondly, regarding the "Sweet Sixteens"...yes, I > did assemble a Volume 3 as a giveaway for those > attending Jonifest 2004. Doh! I am such a memory loss victim! Sorry. I am glad you're putting these covers out for mass enjoyment, however. I think people owe it to themselves to discover the sublime "Tealeaf" by Near & Williamson -- it's 'nearly' perfect. Muller again: > Thirdly, regarding your Joni sampler - certainly > there are lots of ways to go, here's one that pulls > a track from everything except for Blue, MoA & BSN: > > Night In The City > That Song About The Midway > Conversation > Barangrill > Down To You > Harry's House/Centerpiece > Black Crow > Jericho > The Dry Cleaner From Des Moines > Hejira (Shadows & Light) > Be Cool > Dog Eat Dog > Beat Of Black Wings (I would avoid Dancin' > Clown...) > Two Grey Rooms > Magdalene Laundries > Harlem In Havana > Dawntreader (Travelogue) You're brilliant! Now I don't even need to strain the brain. I think I am going to use this list nearly exactly, changing just a couple of things. (For example, I would use the superior Chieftains' "ML" with Joni.) I think I'll also opt for Bo's suggestion of 'Blue Motel Room' in there somewhere. (Thanks, Bo and Bob!) Muller: > Fourthly, let me know what your new phone # is. Sure, Bob! It's 555-1212! I may not have helped much, but I did contribute the DAVE VAN RONK stuff Jimmy hates so much, so I am proud of that! That's all for now. I was alerted to it by that intrepid Bob Muller (I don't remember where he found the listing) who seems to have his finger on the pulse of everything Joni . and Bob actually became part of the show (more on that later). To set this up, Fallbrook is about 45 minutes from me, and not exactly a hotbed of cultural happenings. It's a lot of open land, some horse farms, semi-famous for avocados and, uh, that's about it. A pretty sleepy berg. The tribute was held at a small Holistic Center which had me worried; but, to my pleasant surprise, the performance was amazing. (Wouldn't you know we had to stop at a Burger King before going which I thought was about as UNholistic as you can get . I hate fast food and oddly the one night I have no other choice . oh, well.) The performers were Dave Blackburn on guitar and Robin Adler on vocals (they're husband and wife). They also had a 16-year-old phenom. bass player named Evan and a drummer/percussionist who was terrific -- I wasn't smart enough to write down his name. Dave started the show by acknowledging that probably everyone present liked Joni (lots of applause) and the show would move chronologically through her career. They opened with Clouds and I knew we were in for a real treat. Pretty soon into it, Robin said that they were amazed at Joni's reach, that someone had called to get tickets and said they'd found out about it from someone in South Carolina. I raised my hand. She also was thrilled that their performance was put up on "Joni's website" ahead of the Carnegie Hall tribute, but I don't find any such listing on jonimitchell.com. Is there another website she's talking about? (For me, there's only one game in town!) I introduced myself to Robin at the intermission and told her about the list and explained the South Carolina connection. Unbeknownst to me, my husband was talking to the bass player complimenting him on his playing and was telling him and Robin that we as listers could hugely affect their attendance at their shows. Uh, what? I'll do my best. They plan to take this show "on tour" and I'm not exactly sure how far reaching they mean for it to be. I brought up 'this guy in New Orleans' I know of who could possibly help them with a contact or two. Dave had about 4 or 5 guitars on stage and explained about Joni's tunings. He or Robin would intersperse the songs with letting us know when the songs were written, sometimes who she had performed with, her close call at the Grammys for Help Me in 1974, the Mingus story, etc. Robin is a fantastic, nearly pitch-perfect vocalist (and went into the whole project knowing about three JM songs, she said) and Dave did an amazing job on the guitar. They said the 16-year-old bass player had challenged himself to learn all the Jaco parts, which he clearly succeeded in doing, and he was unbelievable. On the whole I can't think of enough great stuff to say. I had goosebumps. I left Dave with a scribbled note of the list URL and some jottings about what it was all about. I hope they'll check in. They have two more shows planned, one in Idyllwild (Idol? Idyll? Idle? up in the mountains here) on April 1 and one at a place called Dizzy's in downtown San Diego on Nov. 4 (as close to her bday as they could get). Forget all the money to go to Carnegie Hall for a spotty tribute! Let's go to a bar where we can buy drinks and food and listen to great singing and playing! Dave said last night's performance had sold out in about 4 days and he could have sold it out again if they'd had a bigger venue (I'd say there were 60-70 people there). Their setlist was: Clouds, Big Yellow Taxi, A Case of You, Woman of Heart & Mind, Help Me, Woodstock (MOA version), Harry's House/Centerpiece, Hejira, Black Crow, Dry Cleaner from Des Moines, My Secret Place, Night Ride Home, How Do You Stop?, Love's Cries/Crazy Cries of Love. One other sidenote: the last song they played before intermission was Black Crow. Dave played the open tuning for us to illustrate how weird it is and Robin explained that she may sound out of tune sometimes on this but bear with her. They did a wonderful job with it and later when I was waiting in line for the ladies' room the two women before me were saying, 'yeah, that was pretty strange' and the other said, 'you know, I stopped buying her stuff after "Hejira." It just got too weird!" Ha!
