I remember back in the OLD days in the 70's, my parents bought me a pair of radio headphones that had the radio built in to the headband. They weighed a ton and I would continually be re-tuning to WQDR and changing out the 9-volt transistor battery. But it was great...I remember one day when "Jungleland" came on and when the part where the E-Streeter's kicked it up a notch I was sprinting, passing the cars on the road (OK, there was a traffic jam at the time, but it still felt pretty awesome). Then there was the time when they played the entire Dark Side of the Moon and I got so absorbed in it I almost got lost. That radio finally crapped out and I got a Sony Walkman with a cassette player in the early 80's. While it was nice to not have to tune a radio for reception, and the weight was off my ears and head, it was still a pain dealing with the weighty unit itself...I would carry it in my hand (which would quickly give out as if I was toting a hand weight) and strap it on my waist, which worked better but still the thing would jostle and the tape would wow and flutter. So now I have a little mp3 player - it's not an ipod but rather a little thing my son gave me, it barely holds one CD so I've gotta change it out often. Plus one of the channels is busted. So I'm definitely in the market for an ipod nano... But that does nothing to answer your question, does it? Over the years I have selected lots of music to run to, but never Joni - until last year, when I put DJRD on there. Coincidentally this is the one you seemed to prefer as well. I found it very conducive to running, and ironically, The Tenth World, one of my least favorite Joni "songs", becomes one of the best to run through...I feel as though I'm in a wild habitat being chased by some critter (something besides a possum anyway), and Cotton Avenue is an excellent 'warm up' tune as well. Not all of it works, but enough of it does to make it my pick as THE Joni album to run to. Bob NP: Ryan Adams, "Sylvia Plath" - --------------------------------- Yahoo! I posted about it awhile ago, and someone commented how the players were among the best in the Italian world of Jazz. While not a true "Joni Tribute" CD, "So Right" mostly made up of them, and the choices are truly inspired: A Case Of You Harlem In Havana Woodstock River God Must Be A Boogie Man All I Want Amelia + 5 non-Joni tunes... And of course, wonderful Joni-form to put one of her own tracks on it. I loved her inclusion of The New Radicals...but not a lot of surprises for anyone who has read lots of Joni interviews - I would have preferred a two-CD set (ala 1983's "My Top 12") where we get the actual audio of Joni talking about the songs as opposed to just the text. I am thinking of compiling a sampler CD of Joni songs for a new friend who likes Joni okay, but needs to hear more (in my opinion). I'd like the CD to contain songs that'll make him think, "Wow! I'm surprised that's a Joni song!" I want to cover the three plus decades of her recording career, perhaps beginning with "Night in the City" and ending with "Magdalene Laundries." My friend has "Blue," so I plan to omit anything from that album. And no "Tenth World," even though that fits the "I'm surprised that's a Joni song!" criteria. Any suggestion? Also, Mister Muller . . . have the Joni "Sweet 16" covers gone into a third volume yet? Do you ever plan to make the existing volumes downloadable, as you've done with recent covers volumes? Is that a strong enough hint? If it's too much, let me know and I'll send you blanks, etc. As always, thanks for being the bright little sunshiney oasis of kindness and good cheer you've always been! Regarding Joni in Fiction on the JoniMitchell.com site, I have not made any recent updates even though people have offered suggestions. I promise to get to it as soon as I can. Fact is, I have been very, very busy and I am STILL in twice-a-week physical therapy from last summer's accident, plus I am swimming all the time (I've upgraded from the public swimming pool to a beautiful local university piscine) and I am, of course, still coaching that Swedish men's gymnastics team in my spare time -- all in addition to being off-the-wall busy at work. But I'll get to the Joni in Fiction stuff eventually; I always do. If anyone wants to help with this important academic work, my life's magnum opus, please let me know. Lastly, I am ditching my land line and joining the walk-around phone generation, so let me know if you want my new phone number. Mwah, - --Smurf Tired of spam? Yahoo! It was interesting that she picked some stuff I was already aware of ("Saturday Night Fish Fry") and already have ("Jeep's Blues", "Third World Man", "Harlem In Havana"). I didn't start listening to Ellington or Steely Dan because of Joni but there must be some simpatico there, below the surface. Plus, she mentioned a childhood neighbor, Mrs. La Franeer. So, I get a lot out of that disc every time. Repulsive, in a way, but then I bought one, or two ... And today at a Starbucks in the airport (just home from Disneyworld with the kids) I saw JONI MITCHELL on one and of course had to buy it.
