Hello, all.  I am at the Folk Alliance conference in Austin -- looking forward to seeing several of you at the Joni tribute artist showcase this evening, if I can persuade my partner, David, to head back to Dallas a little later.
   
  I'm headed to a workshop I signed up for this morning, so I just have a sec, but wanted to report that Joni's ex-husband, Chuck Mitchell, played a 30-minute set at the conference last night, and he was quite good -- very "old school" troubadour and somewhat theatrical, but a very solid job as an entertainer.
   
  I will write more, and I took pictures I will post, but I wound up talking to Chuck afterward, and he also gave me his CD and asked for mine in exchange.  (Yes, I will post mp3's, too.)
   
  He sang Circle Game, but did not mention Joni on stage or during our conversation.  He says he has been working at buying, renovating and selling old houses for about 10 years and decided he needed to come to the conference to get his touring career restarted, if he was ever going to.  He was upbeat, friendly and confident -- nothing like the down-and-out and embittered guy I remember reading about in a review of one of his shows several years ago (but, of course, we did not talk about Joni!)
   
  If he was bitter, maybe he's turned a corner.  Who knows.  I will write more about his set when I get home, if you would like to hear about it.  It was an incredible experience for me to have the encounter with someone who knew Joni so intimately in the early days of her career.
   
  This is an incredible conference.  I've wound up chatting very casually with Lloyd Maines, Terry Hendrix, Judy Collins, Jeff Black, Sara Hickman, (okay, Jeff & Sara were already friends), Sarah Lee Guthrie (Arlo's daughter) and her husband, Johnny Irion (what a dynamic duo!), and I topped off my evening last night chatting sitting at the bar with Jonathan Edwards!  (I have his first 6 albums on vinyl!)

Hello,

I'm back on the jmdl.  I think a vacation did me well.  I heard about
the tribute in NYC...sounds like it was a lot of fun.  

I'm currently going to music school at GSU in Atlanta.  It's a little
weird with so many classmates who are 18, 19, 20...but after one full
semester I'm over the novelty of it and I'm going to just focus more on
my classes.  Honestly, I'm kind of tired of being around so many kids so
much.  At first it was funny but its starting to get kind of old.

The other weekend, I sang with the GSU singers at the new Georgia
Aquarium.  I hadn't been yet (even though I bought a yearly pass back in
November) and was blown away by just the small glimpse I got.  Hopefully
I'll find some time to make it back over soon.  The whale sharks and
rays were particularly exciting.

I was just down the street from where Coretta Scott King was laying but
I did not try to go to the courthouse or the Baptist church.  There were
lines going for blocks and blocks and several hour waits in the freezing
cold.  I understand why some people would stick the weather out and make
a pilgrimage but I can't afford to get sick and have too much work to do
anyway and plus I don't really like to see open caskets.  I did listen
to Stevie Wonder singing "His Eyes are on the Sparrow"- there's an 8
minute video you can stream at CNN.com .

I did not watch the Grammies but opted instead to watch the new LOST
episode which I enjoyed thoroughly.  I have gotten hooked on LOST and 
it is the one show I look forward to every week(besides the Simpsons.)
Next week looks particularly compelling.

Also, rumour has it that I'll be in the Boston area from March 8- 12th.
 There are already plans brewing for a mini fest that weekend.  Any
interested parties contact Jody Johnson at your leisure.  That's about
it for now.  Hope everyone is well.

There was discussion some time ago of a movie made by actress Rosanna Arquette called "All We Are Saying", a documentary of face-to-face interviews with well known musicians, Joni Mitchell amongst them. I saw a promo clip for it last night that showed Joni speaking, also David Crosby and others. It will be shown on Showtime on March 8th. Looks like a winner.

The details of the Joni concert so far are:

1) Joni Mitchell - 1968 or 69 - Germany Maybe.torrent 

This one is a mysterious but very high-quality recording of Joni in 1967,
1968, or 1969. Early Joni, featuring her beautiful 1960s voice and a
recording that is astoundingly good--crisp, clear, no static, very little
hiss. 

2) Joni Mitchell
Unknown Venue received as
Germany(?) 1968 (?)
Joni didn't play in Germany in 1968. She first played Fayetteville on
January 3rd, 1967 and again in May of the same year, so presumably this show
is after that (as she discusses her visit to Fort Bragg in the intro to "Dr.
Junk"). She says the visit was "about 2 years ago," which would suggest that
this performance took place in 1969, but the presence of "Dr. Junk" in the
setlist would argue against the show being as late as 1969. 

One real highlight of this is the Circle Game/Little Green medley. 

Any help identifying the particulars of this amazingly high-quality
recording is welcome.

  This guy, who does a jazz podcast, did a show about GPPH, and plays about 5 different versions of the song, including Joni's from Mingus, Mingus' original recording from "Mingus Ah Um", Jeff Beck's and Kevin Mahogony's, which features the alternate (and way inferior imo) Rahsaan Roland Kirk lyric.
   
  It's an enjoyable 30 minutes-or-so show. And you don't need any special equipment or anything to hear it, you can just download the fila and enjoy it through the media player of your choice.

Apart from the fact that David Crosby's life does not speak to me as 
someone who has lived life with depth...

and apart from the fact that Britney Spears (who will slash her wrists 
when she realizes she could of spelled it "Britni") has given us, in 
Oops I Did it Again, one of the greatest pop songs ever...

is the fact that Joni chose a long time ago to not get ahead in the 
popular music, because she chose quite intentionally not to stoke the 
star maker machinery behind the popular song.

Joni could have been one of the great hitsmakers ever.  She chose a 
different path.

I am glad she did.

I think it is clear that she lives with occasional twinges of regret 
over that, but it was the only path that would be true to her inner core 
of being.  She has chosen the better way.

David Crosby may be plagued with all kinds of inner demons that have 
kept him from living his life to the fullest.   I can be very 
sympathetic to the weaknesses that he has that have led his life to be 
lived as he has done.   I am certainly no personal monument to a better 
way.

But there is something that grinds me that he feels compelled to rip 
another artist to extol Joni.  Joni does not need to be celebrated by 
diminishing other artists.  I am sure that Britney could do a great job 
of imitating some of the low points of Crosby's life.  Besides, it is 
too easy to use Spears as the example of "bad."  That is not creative.   
Unless Spears changes her career path, she will be  remembered with fun 
only by those who came of age when her music came out just as we 
remember fondly the fun music of our youth, fluff though it may be.  
Crosby will be remembered for some great music that he accomplished with 
others.  Joni will be remembered for the great music she did alone.   
That should be the ultimate reward and the ultimate  getting ahead - 
very few of us will ever be remembered.  Joni is so far ahead in the 
getting ahead game that we all have cause to celebrate.

on losing a pet: without a doubt, the worst day of my life was the one when I 
had to put down my Spanial mix, Corky, after 14 wonderful years.

on Tom Rush: I recently found & bought his early album featuring "Circle 
Game", "Tin Angel" and "Urge For Going" at a flea market, happy to have an old 
record with three Joni covers. Upon playing it, though, I disliked his versions 
so much I haven't listened to it since. His performace at Carnegie was better 
but I wouldn't rave about it; guess I just don't like his style.

and, has anyone heard the cover of "Both Sides Now", by Iron & Wine on their 
Bloc Party CD? It's a v-e-r-y slow version, although respectably performed.

OK, my dog was not a Spanial, but he was a mix, his name 
was Corky, and we put him down when he was 14 ... one of 
the worst days of my life.

That's ... too weird.

Yes, I consider Joni's "excuse" (I don't like the word, 
but I'll let it stand) legitimate, and unless there is 
evidence to the contrary, believe her.

Otherwise, it's just gossip.

Yeah, I think that's true, and we all have our guilty pleasures...(although 
I still feel that putting out a song by a young woman called "Hit Me One 
More Time" is unconscionable).
I don't think Croz has anything against BS per se, but sees her as an 
example of the mindless, souless pap that has been pushed and promoted by 
the big mu$ic powers-that-be. As someone who was on the crest of the wave 
that included Hendrix, Dylan, Joni et al, it must be even more sad for him 
to see that greed has triumphed over art. He had seen the mountain top-where 
art could affect people's lives in a positive way.

Hmm...I've seen the man a few times with just a guitar...damn...he's written 
some fine songs...also witness the first 2 or 3 albums he made with Nash

Some of it...then there's the LA Express, Jaco, Herbie... and not to forget, 
Croz brought Joni to the biz, and had the good sense to "produce" her 1st 
album by doing pretty much nothing but stay out of the way

She has achieved an incredible amount in artistic and human terms...but 
surely knowing one has done good works, or helped others, whether they are 
ever recognized or not, must be it's own reward, Rev,
and good energy is never lost; like wisdom, it's passed along.
I don't think Joni regrets not being a hitmaker, so much as she regrets that 
the world did not have the good sense to recognize her as Queen. I think 
Croz would be the first to bow down before her. That a marginally talented 
pair of boobs like Brit is crowned instead is part of our sad world, I 
guess, like having a privileged moron for a president rather than someone 
like, say, MLK who could truly inspire and advance the people.
