Accomplished singers learn to suppress the gag reflex for obvious reasons. It is kind of like suppressing reflexive sneezing when you just can't afford to sneeze. I like the glabellar reflex. You can test it on your loved ones. Using your middle finger, tap on their forehead between the eye brows several times, gently but firmly, at a slow 4:4 beat. Watch their eyes. The first time you tap, they will close their eyes reflexively - blink. With successive taps, they won't blink... if they have normal habituation of the reflex. In Parkinsonian patients, they keep blinking... no habituation. Julius wrote: I've always wanted to be a teacher's aide, sorta, Laura. You're so sweet. I'm honored to be included in your Med School lecture and, geez, I hope Joni is too. I'll ask Sam Feldman... Sorta aorta? Tell Sam Joni is always welcome to come to any of my tributes to her in my lectures. And if her cat gets sick, she can bring dear kitty because my students will take good care of the patient. I woke up this morning thinking maybe I can quote Both Sides Now to encourage my students to distinguish between both the dorsal and the ventral sides of the brainstem and not to end up singing, "it's brainstem illusions I recall I really don't know the brainstem at all" by test time. Do I now need to take the Hippocratic Oath, btw? No. Just singing Shadows and Light will do. And do I get to sport a spiffy white lab coat with a Grateful Dead tie-dye concert T-shirt, festooned with a festive "steal-your-face," concealed beneath it? That will be way cool! Like the good professor you are, you got me thinking, Laura (and that ain't easy). I learned all the following today thanks to you, Professor Dr. Stanley. Thanks for teaching me tonight. Glad you got on this med school flight tonight. Stimulating those neurons is good for warding off Alzheimer's disease so they say. Ever Your Apt Pupil, Julius Parasympathetic no doubt. Since I was preoccupied with that OTHER thing on the 1st of the month, I wasn't able to release this month's Covers Volume on the 1st as is my custom. So here it is, late but just as great. As always, you'll see some names you know, some you don't and everything in between since Joni reaches across the borderlines into so many different hearts and genres. As always, a tip of the Tam O'Shanter to the folks who helped me gather these goodies: Paul M & Jerry, thanks fellas! Now let's put it under the microscope and begin our dissection... Kelley Dolan - Woodstock: We start out with this interesting cover of Woodstock, a vocal accompanied solely by a bongo. The percussion is pretty steady, but Kelley wanders and winds around melodically - very Tori-like. We'll hear from the real Tori in just a few minutes. The Shawnee Choir - Both Sides Now: D'oh! Another high school choir, accompanied by piano and using the sheet music/arrangement as all the other school choir versions I've heard. Still, the voices are nice and they have a nice blend for the most part. Cornelia - The Circle Game: Hey, everybody - let's all twist around the pool to some Joni! Most TCG covers either take a slow (Joni) or fast (Ian & Sylvia) route, this one takes an even more frantic fruggy route - clocks in at an amazing 2:49! While it's a lot of fun, it does sorta strip the meaning from the song. Me And Them - Big Yellow Taxi: Acoustic group from Wisconsin - a download from their website. Kathleen A. Martin - Carey: One voice with strumming guitar, patterned after Joni's arrangement. Judy Collins - That Song About The Midway: We've previously released a live (Mountain Stage) recording of this track, this is Judy's studio track, released about a year ago on her 'Portrait Of An American Girl" album. Pretty song, lovely voice - makes for a very enjoyable recording. Drew Massicot - Both Sides Now: This is an instrumental (piano) version, fairly recent - 1999. Pleasant in a music-boxy kind of way. David Clayton-Thomas - River: Y'all remember David Clayton-Thomas, the singer for Blood, Sweat and Tears. I loved them and him, and that was long ago. There's a really pretty guitar on this track, but David's voice seems to have lost its fullness, it seems too fragile & thin, not to mention coming up flat on several notes throughout. It does have its moments though, and the piano-guitar interplay is very nice. George Michael - Edith And The Kingpin: What a pleasant surprise! George performed this as part of a BBC interview, he must have brought a backing track with him as the instrumentation is very complex and much more than you'd hear in your typical 'stop in and play on the radio' moment. GM's soulful voice really is a good fit with this song - two thumbs way up! Harvard Opportunes - Big Yellow Taxi: BYT has certainly inspired the college acapella people, both before & especially after the Counting Crows version. This one is the Crows' arrangement, with some interesting vocal flurries thrown in to simulate percussion and cymbals and such. Kelly Smith - Both Sides Now: This one has a simple beauty to it, almost like you're a fly on the wall just listening to a young girl play the guitar and sing in her bedroom. Monica Borrfors - Twisted: Euro-jazz with a walking bass and sax solo after the "no driver on the top" part. Pretty nice for the most part. Kirk Felix - The Circle Game: Reminded me of Jim Croce, both with the nimble guitar picking and the vocal quality. This one comes from 1972. Karin van Dam - A Case Of You: Not to be confused with Lydia van Dam, who gave us a whole CD of wonderful Joni covers, Karin is just as talented and even sounds very similar. This is a beautiful arrangement, slow, jazzy and moody. Beautiful acoustic guitar solo and soprano sax work - BUT - she does make a lyric change that rubs me the wrong way: "I am a lonely singer, I live in a box of music sheets..." Don't know why, but those who don't like the painter lyric maybe think of this as an improvement. That small detail aside, this is a Dam fine cover. The B. Toff Band - Both Sides Now: Back in 1976, a couple of Berkeley students recorded an album (probably after consuming some things they shouldn't have) and this is part of the result. For better or worse, we only get the first verse and chorus. This is great in a deliciously awful way. Tori Amos - The Circle Game: This one is twice as long as Cornelia's; Tori's live version (recorded at her April 15, 2005 concert in Chicago) is of course vocal and piano, and she really takes it and puts her own stamp on it as she did with her studio version of A Case Of You. Hopefully she'll continue covering Joni on future recordings, she really does a good job with it. Baby Jane Dexter - Two Grey Rooms: Baby Jane Dexter - Be Cool: BJD is an NYC cabaret singer, she was given a list of songs by a former JMDLer and picked these two. Good picks, and she certainly emotes properly, but her voice has a bit too much warble for my tastes, plus the recording is very lo-fi; she actually recorded these live using a cassette recorder, so there's more hiss than there should be. Still, it's nice to see 2GR becoming a song that's getting more and more attention. James Coane - A Case Of You: Vocal & guitar, Pennsylvanian James Coane sounds like a mix of Bobby Goldsboro and Glenn Yarborough. But it does bug me that he sings "YOUR taste so bitter and so sweet"...shouldn't but it does. Nice guitar, though, and at the end a banjo comes in along with a couple of other instruments. And that's that - 19 tracks, over 75 minutes of Joni covers - thanks for reading, hope you can get the download and that you like it if you do. And do let me know if would prefer to get a copy via the snail mail, we can work that out too. No no. Focus on the highs. I loved New York. I fell in love with Greenwich and want to live there. The highlight of my few days in Manhattan was sitting in Washington Square drinking tea, with the sun shining down on the dog walkers and chess players and students and speakers. The carnegie tribute was a close second;-) To be in carnegie hall was, in itself, a fantastic experience. The citigroup cafe gathering was fun. It was great to meet so many JMDLers and to put faces to names i have been seeing for over six years now, and to meet people i did not know through the list. It was also great to meet up with those few i have met before. I won't try to recall everyone by name right now. Dermot, my partner, is no Joni fan and sort of finds the whole JMDL thing a bit odd. But, since he's used to indulging my oddities, he agreed to come along and smile for the cameras:-) Despite himself he had fun. I don't even have a partial list of songs played by JMDLers there, but i enjoyed every minute of it with my eight dollar g & t in a wine glass wiht the smallest slice of lime imaginable, lol. I do remember being very impressed by Paz playng guitar, Kay Ashley singing fiddle and drum (Dermot remarked "that's quite political for you, now") and of course our Sherelle. Great. I lvoed the crazy happy cries of "i've played carnegie hall", lol. Well done to all of you guys. On to the main event: I won't comment on every act that performed (i never got one of the sheets detailing the acts actually so can't be sure that iw ould rememebr everything correctly). Sure, I could not do that with as much accuracy or eloquence as those that have already posted on teh topic. Joni's no show did not exactly surprise me. I did *not* like the note however. It struck me as very much along the lines of "Dear teacher, please excuse Joan from gym class....". I would have preferred a simple "i hope ye all enjoy the show tonight". For me, the bigger disappointment was Tracy Chapman, Joan Osbourne, and Bebel Gilberto pulling out beforehand. Absolute highlights - Michelle Williams, Bette what was her name again??? She was absolutely amazing and i want her album.... last chance lost is a song i don't really listen to (i love the TI album and it is the one song i usually skip), loved the fact that Shawn tackled TI, enjoyed SOnya Kitchell, Judy Collins, that raised on robbery guy was fun. I loved God must be a boogie man (afterwards Dermot said "that was really good.... i thought people weren't supposed to like the mingus album", i laughed, he must have heard somehting that i siad about Joni.... for the record i like that album... he was listening to it a few days later so something was achieved, hehe:-) OH MY GOD OH MY GOD seeing Laurie Anderson i almost forgot to breathe. I was disappointed with teh opening. There was some sort of in-key or in-tune problem that i am not talented enough to be abel to describe. Dar Williams did a competent RNH. I thought Ameila by Suzanne Vega was boring. It's a big song and i felt that it was perhaps too spare. My feeling was that she was hanging the whole song around "it was just a false alarm" and then plodding through the rest to get to the next "it was just a false alarm". I love her voice and was expecting something amazing from her. TOm Rush was very good, but, imho, not the big deal that others have made. Richie Havens did not at all do it for me, nor did Jimmy Scott (but gosh, jaysus, if i'm still going at 80... fair play to him) Now, this meshell woman. I thought she was weird. So weird in fact that i ran out and bought her album. I will probably also invest in Jessie Malin's album. Nellie mckay was brave to bring chelsea morning onto piano. I did not think it entirely successful, but i enjoyed it more than many of the learned crowd here did. who did i forget? mmmm Oki, my unstructured rambling is running out of steam.... We never made it to the night in the city event unfortunately. We had planned our route and had also bought tickets to see sonya kitchell at the living room beforehand (and now that i hear a bunch of you guys went to see her i am, as they say, reefing jealous). but, after a heavy day of touristing, we were knackered and went for dinner and a few drinks and, with sore feet, retired to the hotel about one am. I look forward to future gatherings with all you people. A possible FUll Moon fest on the horizn, talk of going to Italy, talk of an England Fest at some unspecified point.... I'll be there. many thanks to Patrick, Julius, Cassy, Les Irvin, and, ofc course, Joni. And to everyone for being so open and friendly. I loved all of your descriptions and stories about the Tribute. I completely understand how Joni must be feeling about Nietzsche....in 1999 I had to say a sad goodbye to my Airedale (Argie) who was 12 years old. We had made a deal when he was a pup that I'd never allow him to suffer. Remembering the grief of those days reminds me that many times we allow ourselves to grieve so hard and so completely for our furry pals but not for our friends and relatives. Interesting.....my heart goes out to Joni. I can understand without question how she couldn't attend the Tribute. BTW, I have four Poodles ranging from 1 to 7 years old. Sammie, my pup never allows me out of her sight. I never take for granted the amazing joy these loving creatures so willingly share with me. Has anyone read the book, "Marley & Me"? If not, rush out and get a copy. Fabulous reading....I've heard it's going to be a movie! Julius!!! Thank you so much for the beautiful Joni-cards!!!!! I love them...sharing them with special people. Did you get the magnets? For everyone who attended the Tribute, it sounds as though you had a fantastic time. Your postings have helped to make me feel as though I was (almost) right there with you!!! So, thanks to all! The photos were great! Bob, I'm looking forward to seeing Felicity Huffman's acting in "TransAmerica"...she's such a talented woman. Over the years I've worked with at least 10 individuals who made the decision to be true to themselves and go through the overwhelming experience that accompanies the change of gender. Most of the people I worked with had their operations in Quebec. It takes an amazing amount of courage to make the decision and follow through with all of the demands that go along with pre-op preparation. I always marveled at the their courage. Today there's a huge storm that's promises to blanket us with inches of snow white...I'm all prepared to watch the Olympics and have long Joni breaks as well. Sometimes I enjoy starting at the very beginning album and then listening carefully as Joni's work progresses....it's magic. Hope everyone is well. Bo - --------------------------------- Yahoo! Karen, allow me to introduce you to the most awesome guitar tab site in the world;. _http://jonimitchell.com/guitar/_ (http://jonimitchell.com/guitar/) 5 years ago it changed my life. A fair amateur guitarist, for 30 years I had abandoned all hope of finding out (much less figuring out) how sJoni did it - - perhaps if I had devoted my life to it ........... Anyway, those more dedicated and talented than I actually did it (Sue McNamara, Howard Wright and Marian Russell - with a few miscellaneous contributors) - - investigated, sleuthed, figured and reconstructed Joni's profound insight of yesteryear - to wit, "there must be 50 ways to tune your gittar". And shared it with us! Thank you so much, Sue, Howard and Marian (every year or so, I feel the urge to say 'thanks' publicly). Until then, I only knew Circle Game and Little Green (open G, real obvious). Now, I've got the whole world in my hands. As of now, I can do a decent or at least passable job on about 100 of Joni's songs. All that pleasure, because of this site. Both here and in the blondes in the bleachers exact name places have been given for where she frequently eats ( i know it was on an album) and the name of her town in Canada etc.. Do you guys think that's wise? Joni's a little reckless about her confidences. I am always afraid that there could be a wacko lurking. Look at what happened to john lennon. and then that postal worker who caused all the grief. I've been lurking for years it seems and it's time I pop my head out and let you all know that I appreciate this community and what's it done for my most obsessive passion, the music of Joni Mitchell. I have to say that I really owe a lot of the development of the guitar site to my compatriots Howard and Marian, also of course, Les and his generous offer of housing our questionably legal database. Who would have thought oh those 10 years ago that we would eventually wind up on the official Joni Mitchell site? I still get goosebumps thinking about it. This concept hatched in my brain after I started discovering Howard's tabs on OLGA (the On-Line Guitar Archive). He had wonderful tabs of People's Parties and Hejira which I started picking at trying to master. Actually People's Party is the first song that thrilled me to open tuning. the opening bar chords when strummed sounded so much like the album I was hooked. I thought that I needed a place to put all these tabs so I could use them. With Les's help Howard, Marian and I got to work and started on the catalog. It was a lot of fun to have these three way email discussions going on about different tunings. I remember Silky Veils of Ardor was completed after some pretty darn good detective work. It's been a couple of years now that the database has pretty much been completed and it remains one of the things I am most proud of (except for my marriage and my daughter!) Please feel free to contact me about any questions you have about the tunings or the tabs. We are still reachable at guitars@jonimitchell.com or you can email me at my new email address: SueMc@jonimitchell.com. (awesome!) Also, I must let you know that I'm waiting for a date this spring for our 3rd Annual Only Joni Open Mic. This year we are holding it at Cornell's Willard Straight Hall, the student union, and I'm really hoping the students come out in force to play some Joni. take care, sue > Karen asked > > > "I have another question. He told me that Joni had committed from day one to be in attendance. Throughout the planning process she was very supportive of the event - donating her painting for the promotional material and even approving the artists that were to appear (including nixing one unnamed artist). Four days before the event, they received the exact letter that was read to the audience regarding her sick cat. No other explanation was given.
