I caught most of this 2-hour documentary. It introduced us to many great Canadian garage bands from the 60's who made good. Truth be told, little time is given to the luminaries. For example, Joni, Leonard, Neil Young and Bruce Coburn are all covered in about 20 minutes. As for the Joni segment, we see Buffy Sainte-Marie explaining how she led her manager, Elliot Roberts, to Joni. He explains how Joni captivated him and instantly diverted his careeer path. We see Roberts and Randy Bachman commenting on Joni's Blue. Standard stuff, I'd say. A younger generation of Canadian artists talk about her guitar playing, her wordsmithing, her use of the word Canada, as a lyric. We see a very early B&W CBC clip of Night in the City and an excerpt of California on dulcimer from the BBC pink dress concert. Finaly, we see an excerpt of Diana Krall's ACOY. It all goes by very fast - that's it folks. Still, overall it made for an enjoyable evening of entertainment. I enjoyed seeing how these boomers have aged - some looking great, some a little haggard at 60 (ie Robbie Robertson from The Band), all recalling their good 'ol days. Kinda reassuring to see that so many are still around : ) Michael in Quebec PS. Carnegie festers - Have a joly time in New York ! Chris Applause on all sides now Stars gather for concert in tribute to Joni Mitchell Friday, January 27, 2006 BY JAY LUSTIG Star-Ledger Staff POP/ROCK In 2000, Elton John appeared at a Joni Mitchell tribute concert at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. Mitchell sang briefly at the end of the evening, but for most of the night she sat in a balcony, watching John and other performers, like k.d. lang and Diana Krall. "I've played before the queen of England. It's not so intimidating," John said, humbled by Mitchell's status as one of her generation's consummate singer-songwriters. On Wednesday at Carnegie Hall, more than 20 other artists will get to experience that feeling, too, as the New York-based music-education organization, the Music for Youth Foundation, presents a benefit concert comprised of Mitchell covers. Mitchell is planning to attend, Music for Youth Foundation executive director Jon Marcus said. But she isn't scheduled to perform. She could, "should the spirit move her," Marcus said. "But we're not expecting that." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 31 Jan 2006 22:01:44 EST From: PassScribe@aol.com Subject: Re:JFK to Manhattan Hi, Craig, I live on Long Island and don't usually go from JFK to Manhattan but as far as I know: 1. the EASIEST and QUICKEST way from JFK to Manhattan is via Taxi (plenty to be found when you emerge from the terminal) but probably the most expensive. 2. A cheaper way but more time consuming is to take the new elevated shuttle from JFK to the Long Island RR terminal in Jamaica (about a ten-minute ride) and then take a LIRR train (about $6 to $8. each way) into Manhattan's Penn Station. You must then take a subway train ($2.00) uptown to Park Central. Not very difficult but schlepping involved. 3. There are also private car services you can call (make reservation before you fly and they will be nearby when you land-you call them after getting your baggage & they'll meet you outside) which will send a van or car to pick you up and you pay a flat rate (not on a meter like a cab). I usually take one from East Meadow to JFK and it costs me $40. each way for two (my wife & I). I imagine you might pay about that much for one person to Manhattan due to distance, tolls & time involved. If you're interested in this option, I suggest Ollie's Car Service (718) 229-2064 or (516) 487-3420- call them for a price quote.
