While some people might feel the need to lambaste the president for his response, in fact, it was a nicely handled bit of politics. He didn't say he wouldn't see it, nor did he take the opportunity to criticize liberal Hollywood or Gay America. Here's is my plea to the President to see the film: Dear President Bush: I have never written you a letter nor did I ever think I would. I know you're busy fighting the war on terror and all, but I thought I should draw your attention to one of the best films released this year. I have heard that you like to listen to Van Morrison and Joni Mitchell, which shows me you have decent taste, and so I have to echo the sentiments of the student who addressed you last week: you would love this movie. Ang Lee is at the height of his directorial power. Having already made a trio of very different but equally outstanding and original films b The Ice Storm, Sense and Sensibility and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon to his resume (I have a feeling Laura might have seen those films), hebs outdone himself this time around. Mr. President, he didn't make a movie about gay cowboys; he made a movie about loneliness, isolation and not living in a world that accepts you as you are. It is a beautiful, haunting story, one I know you wonbt forget. Brokeback Mountain is a western of a different kind. Like Clint Eastwoodbs Unforgiven, it shows the vulnerable side of the cowboys we have all grown up with in films, and perhaps those you grew up around back in Texas, you know, before the dark days of well, before you found Jesus and all. You may have known an Ennis Delmar or a Jack Twist. And if you didn't know them, perhaps you weren't looking hard enough. The film opens on two cowboys who herd sheep up on Brokeback Mountain one summer. It is just the two of them for endless days and nights. For whatever reason, they end up getting close in all kinds of ways, not just in the way everyone is talking about. Ennis Delmar (played by one of the best actors of his generation, Heath Ledger) has never found anyone he could be himself around until Jack comes along. Likewise, Jack (played by the equally marvelous Jake Gyllenhaal) finds in Ennis a soul mate. But thatbs where the giggling stops. Most of their lives, they try hard to deny the truth inside of them. You can imagine how hard that must be in places like Texas and Wyoming b where you get killed for exhibiting bdeviantb behavior. But you know as well as I do that people, yes, even gods people, come many different ways. And if you honestly believe that certain people are damned to hell for being born a certain way then I'm afraid I have misjudged you. I donbt think you really do believe that; I know you are smarter. But even if you aren't ready to accept the idea of gay people in your heart yet, perhaps you are interested in seeing just a plain old well made movie. You might even want to see it just so you can debunk its genius b though I know if you sit down and watch it, you and Mrs. Bush will be crying like babies. The script is written by producer Diana Ossana and Larry McMurtry. You must know McMurtrybs work like Lonesome Dove. If you donbt, ask Laura about him. But I feel sure you not only know his work but have read much of it. If you haven't, I know Laura has. You have to admit that if a tough old coot like McMurtry can bgo there,b you most certainly can. You wonbt find a better acted, emotionally moving, universal love story than this one. After about fifteen minutes, you aren't watching two men together so much as you're watching how living a life that is a lie can destroy everyone around you. The women you're forced to marry, the mothers who watch and witness your pain, your own need to drink the pain away. It is as simple as the sun coming up yet more complicated than you can imagine. As Ennis says, bIf you can bt fix it, you have to stand it.b It is my hope, Mr. President, that you will take the time to open your heart and mind to Brokeback Mountain. You will be the better for it b a better husband, a better father, a better president, a better man. - -------- - -Julius In a message dated 1/24/06 11:46:51 PM, JRMCo1 writes: > In the "Late Night with David Letterman" (from New York!) television show > monologue tonight: > > "President Bush admitted today that he had not seen 'Brokeback Mountain' > yet...but he did express interest in drilling for oil there!"B {Drummer: > Ba-da-bing!} > > -Julius, who has yet to see it.B Maybe in NY? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 26 Jan 2006 08:37:55 -0500 From: "Joe Gavrilovich" Subject: RE: Rockwood Music Event (Thurs night) Hi all, If you're planning on going to the "Night in the City" event, I noticed that while jonimitchell.com has the event beginning at 11pm, the venue's site (http://www.rockwoodmusichall.com/) has a different artist listed at 11, and the NITC lineup (of nearly 20 performers!) starting at midnight. My head and heart has been full of so much else. Me and Karen Marie were really planning to go to NYC. I was in fact calling the ticket office at Carnegie Hall friday night from my cell phone and almost ordering tickets. But there were many things that had to be arranged to make it all happen. We had to get our new (elctronic) passports(after what happened 9/11) - and we were in a hurry- I called the police on saturday morning and they told me this usually takes two weeks. Besides I had to solve my not very good financial situation to find a way around, and I was in fact calling my bank and ordering a master card just to be able to go - but would it reach me in timee...? We really were in the urge for going. We felt that we had to go... Then saturday came. I was in the middle of moving all my stuff - I am leaving Oslo for the country, closer to my work. So I was allready filled up with emotions and a certain grief that morning when Karen Marie called me and told me that she had read on the digest that Joni weren't coming. This kind of blew the air out of our dreamy bubble. It burst and fell to the ground. In a way I felt relief in another way I felt grief and disappointment. We had wanted it so much. Really dreamed about it - but suddendly trapped by all sorts of limits - excuses - applogies - we just draw the conclusion that we couldn't come - couldn't go, So the next day - after moving my stuff - and when moving to my new house - with all the concrete and emotional chaos that brings up - I went to visit Karen Marie again. She showed me the brilliant mail I recieved from Patti Parlette. Again I felt this slight tremblin' in my bones. But I just felt that it was to many things to rearrange to reorder - rebook - relive - so I Iet the chance go by. And I did not have the energy to answer any of your very friendly emails. And I want to apolgise you for that. I know the concert will be great - I know that not any of you who goes will regret that you went - and I wish I could have been there with you- to cherish SIQUOMB's music - with or without our Lady's blessing. Yesterday - writing a mail to another exciting singer and musician - Sherelle (from the list) I wrote : I hope that you who go to New York - can feel that you salute and honor Joni's music - despite she does not attend it, nor seem to appreciate or value that kind of focus. But our dear Joni- didnt't she say it herself "Love is a story told to a friend It's second hand" I hereby transcribe this to the Joni tribute Concert at Carnegie: Joni's great music is a story told to many friends - brought to you here at Carnegie - second hand by many great artists and like love - this "second hand story telling" can reveal something new - just like Jericho : "Let these walls come tumbling down" I know this will be a great gathering and very exciting revisitation of Joni Miitchell's texts and music. Oh - how lucky we are(and I know speak about us as human kind) to be able to do that. And through these new voices her musical material can be (redis)&covered again and again - and not least through this we - who love music - can discover new voices - like your voice. Sherelle - your and other great artist's music.(Just aks Bob -I am sure he will be happy to give you a few good names - - :-) So sorry for giving you false hopes and triggering your kind generousity - - We would really liked to attend the show - but this time we had to see our own limits . The show must go on - and that will be great - be it without both Joni and us norwegians. Both sides, now! What me and Karen Marie has concluded is that it would be great to see some you our fellow enthusiats some other time - maybe we could come to one of the Joni fests in the future? What is comin' up next. I really hope so! And I really look forward to get a computer and internet in my (new!) home - so that I can be able to communicate my Joni feelings to you - whenever I like too. I think there are some safe bets but there is such an eclectic mix of performance styles (unlike the TNT show which was pretty much MOR) that trying to guess is a crapshoot at best. Several of these artists I have no knowlegde of and had to do some investigative work to see what they are all about. If nothing else, it was a good way to orient me with some of the performers. And who knows? Maybe the lineup has been shuffled since this morning when I pulled these names off the official concert website, but here goes nuthin'. And please, just take my predictions for pure entertainment value; as always no wagering. And it goes without saying that I welcome opposing viewpoints. Laurie Anderson - Who's to say? Laurie is always an unpredictable and total wildcard. Guesses at most, guesses based on....? Whatever she does will be wonderful & inventive & unique, I'd be real surprised if she does BSN again (as she performed it at Wall to Wall), I just think she likes to challenge herself. I'm saying "All I Want" done in a way that has never been heard before. Assembly of Dust featuring Sonya Kitchell - An odd pairing, to be sure...AoD appear to be Phish-like jam band, and Sonya Kitchell is a 16-year old singer-songwriter who is very similar to Joni's early stylings. "Black Crow" is my pick; it contains a folk-jazz vocal pattern and a free-form chord structure that is open for exploration and jamming, not that I'm looking for a 20-minute version or anything. Then again, how much meaning can someone who is but a mere sweet 16 give a line like "in search of love and music my whole life has been...."? We'll see. Don Byron - My ears are still ringing from the cacophony he presented at 2003's Wall to Wall...he did The Priest & Dreamland, both going on WAY too long and going WAY out in left field. It was even hard to recognize what songs he was doing. If he shows up with an ensemble, he may do The Priest again, but I doubt it. I'd look for him to pull one from the Mingus songbook - "God Must Be A Boogie Man". If he shows up solo with his clarinet he might do something that lends itself to a free-jazz interpretation like "Roses Blue". Maybe in this format he will be more disciplined, for the audience's sake I hope so. Marc Cohn - Singer-songwriter very familiar with Joni's work, so I'm looking for him to go a little deeper in the catalogue. Given that his claim to fame is "Walking In Memphis" I'll predict that he pulls up "Furry Sings The Blues" which lends itself to a masculine interpretation and has lyrics that he's gotta appreciate. Plus the whole "Memphis" thang. Judy Collins - Of course, if she does BSN she gets an easy standing ovation; she may get one regardless as she was so pivotal in Joni's thrust into the popular arena. If she only does one song, it'll be "That Song About The Midway" which she's been doing on the road since she recorded it. She might lead a group-sing in a show-closing BSN as well, or she might get a solo shot at it. Shawn Colvin - Shawn has done a slew of Joni songs live and is also very well-acquainted with her catalog. She did a beautiful job with Amelia for the TNT trib in 2000, she may reprise it here. I wouldn't be surprised if she does something different, I'm rolling the dice here and predicting "Conversation" which she performed early on in her career. Cowboy Junkies - Whatever The CJ's do, it's gonna be wonderful. Looking back on their choices of covers, they seem to most revel in re-inventing an artist's best-known song and making it their own...Patsy Cline's "Walking After Midnight", Bruce's "Thunder Road", Lou Reed's "Sweet Jane", etc. I'm looking for Margo & Co. to put their own spin on "Help Me" with less jazzy-pop and more moody introspection. Eels - E is another wild card; I've got a number of Eels CD's and there's not an obvious number jumping out at me. Since most of his work is tinged with darkness, I'm going with "Rainy Night House" for Mr. Everett, plus I can hear him doing that one in my head and the only other one I can hear is Free Man but it's just too cheery for him. I will also bet that I am wrong, wrong, wrong. Bebel Gilberto - I'm guessing that Ms. Gilberto will appropriate the Sergio Mendes samba arrangement of "Chelsea Morning", but it would be sweet if she brought out a latin-tinged "Dreamland" instead. Amy Grant - She's done BYT and had a hit with it, re-releasing it and even remixing it. A pretty safe bet that she'll do it at Carnegie Hall. Richie Havens - He opened THE Woodstock and recorded Joni's song of the same name in '04, bet the farm that Woodstock will be his - oh, and he'll bring down the house with it as well. Bettye LaVette - A highly regarded R&B singer who's been out there as long as the subject of the tribute, I'm hoping that she's been exposed to Chaka Khan's DVD and will turn in a soulful take on "Man From Mars". Jesse Malin - It would be tempting to think that Jesse would come out rocking with "Raised On Robbery", but he appears to have trended away from bar-brand R&R to more Tom Waits/Ryan Adams sorta stuff - I'm looking for him to come out with something more sensitive along the lines of "Jericho". Nellie McKay - It'll be a piano song, something with some attitude. I'll predict "Last Time I Saw Richard" but would absolutely wet myself if she would do "Judgement of the Moon & Stars". Me'Shell NdegeOcello - Jazz-soul oriented, afrocentric, political, emotional..."Ethiopia". Please. Pharoah's Daughter - Jewish folk ensemble, influenced by Eastern European Klezmer & Middle Eastern Jewish music. The group's instrumentation features woodwinds, guitar, tabla and other exotic percussion. I have no clue - "Carey" done in Klezmer-style...Oy! Tom Rush - Well, it's 50/50 between Circle Game & Urge For Going...he has kept UFG in his setlist since he first recorded it, so I'm laying real good odds that that's what we'll hear from him in this historical NYC show. And it will be an emotional rendition as he sings it and reflects upon what the song has meant to him over the years. Jimmy Scott - With a voice that has to be heard to be believed, I'm looking for Scott to do something from Joni's jazz catalog, he also has a way with a standard, I'm going to look for a torch-version of "A Case Of You" but would be blown away if he was to do "Harlem In Havana" which would be a better choice. Neil Sedaka - Something peppy and poppy, wouldn't be at all surprised to hear him do "Free Man In Paris", maybe even gets to do "The Circle Game" unless they're going to do a TNT-ish "everyone comes out and holds hands and leads the audience singalong" version of it. Martin Sexton - A young folk-soul singer with a strong range, the sky is the limit for what he might do. Still, I'll play it safe and instead of picking something obscure that would work like "Yvette In English" I'll go with a safer choice like "For Free". Joanne Shenandoah - A native American, I'm betting that she's going to bring to the forefront Joni's heritage as well which means it's down to "Lakota" or "Cherokee Louise". Since Lakota is a bit more obtuse, I'll bet she goes with the latter. Suzanne Vega - Having followed Suzanne since her first release, I know that like Joni she's migrated more towards more complex and more experimental musical forms. Still, I'm predicting something folkish and hushed - "Cactus Tree" Dar Williams - No stranger to direct, honest, emotional songs and I'm sure she's familiar with Joni's newer work. I'm hoping for "The Magdalene Laundries". Michelle Williams - I'd love to hear her inject some R&B/soulfulness into "Be Cool". I'll be happy just watching her, whatever she sings. The Wood Brothers - Traditional, bluegrass - I'll bet they take on "You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio" Those are my guesses, and I'm sticking with 'em - even when the concert is done and everyone points out that I missed every one***. And if you have your own picks, let's hear 'em - even if you're not going to be there. ***Except Richie Havens. First, let me tell you about the weekend. As those of you who any of the 'fests at Ashara's may recall know, I work for a presenting organization in Boston. We present artists like Yo-Yo Ma, Lincoln Center Jazz, Staatskapelle Berlin with Daniel Barenboim, The Chieftains, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Arlo Guthrie and Mark Morris Dance Group. This is just a sampling of the 50 different artists we are presenting this season at venues like Symphony Hall and The Wang Center. So, this last weekend we presented Mark Morris Dance Group dancing Mark Morris' masterwork, "L'Allegro, il Penseroso ed it Moderato." I have heard wonderful things about this full-length ballet from lister Patrick (Patrick, I'll call, promise!) - who shares my passion for MMDG (and then some) - and my sister-in-law who is a photographer and has had the pleasure of photographing it. I eagerly anticipated its arrival, but it in no way prepared me for just how special it was. The performance includes four vocalists and a chorus and an orchestra - because Mark Morris never, ever has his dancers dance to recorded music - with some dramatic, yet simple, staging and colorful and profoundly meaningful lighting and costuming. The dance was the most glorious, uplifting, sometimes funny and sometimes tragic, but always beautiful dance performance I have ever seen. Ever. You owe it to yourself to buy a ticket if the opportunity ever presents itself. In fact, at the hall that night after people were done jumping out of their seats and applauding loudly and shouting 'bravo!' and stomping their feet, they swore to themselves that they would try to buy a ticket to see it again during the remainder of the run. I had the good fortune to be able to just go again, on Sunday, and as it ended I found myself with tears streaming down my face. The arts do that for you, yes they do. The next day I went to a talk that was a conversation, on stage, between Boston Globe classical music critic Richard Dyer and Mark about music and L'Allegro. As I sat and listened it struck me how much like Joni he is - brilliant, funny , wise, arrogant, and very, very knowledgeable about many facets of what they draw on to make their art. That lead me to wonder what a conversation between the two of them would be like. I can just see and hear them debating the virtues of one composer as compared to another composer. Most (if not all) of us have heard recordings of Joni's interviews about Debussy and other artists who influenced her as she was coming up, and certainly her expansive appetite for quality (always in her own judgment, of course) had me wondering how they would get along. Which leads me to wonder. Have their paths crossed? Those of you who are the historians - do you know? I would pay good money to see such a conversation, but who else would you like to see her have one of the conversations with? Since I never post, may I add a couple of other bits and pieces? * I'm really looking forward to seeing everyone at the concert and other activities in NYC next week * In the business I'm in they usually refer to the performance as "event," which drives me crazy as a person who does fundraisers that we call "special events" because I feel like they should just say performance. So when I read Julius' forwarded email about 'won't be attending the event' I automatically assumed it meant the performance. For what that's worth. * I love how the lineup keeps evolving - this is going to be an amazing Jonifest! * Did I mention that I'm really, really looking forward to seeing the concert and seeing the listers - those with whom I've partied and praised and celebrated over the years (8 years now!), plus all those whom I have not yet met. If you're on this path of admiring and being uplifted by the body of work created by the amazing artist Joni Mitchell, you're someone I look forward to meeting. I just read Bob Muller's educated predictions for who will sing what on Wednesday. I, a mere lyrics-quoter, am amazed, comme d'habitude, at his extensive knowledge of music. (Je m'abaisse devant votre grandeur, Monsieur Muller.) I then went on to read my daily newspaper (The Hartford Courant), and let out a squeal of delight when I saw this headline in the entertainment section: Joni Mitchell Tribute Will Be Teen's Carnegie Debut JONI MITCHELL in my local paper!!! Soft, what light through yonder newsprint breaks! Okay, readers beware: if you want to be surprised at the Tribute, STOP READING NOW. If you want to know what Sonya Kitchell is going to sing, read on: Joni Mitchell Tribute Will Be Teen's Carnegie Debut January 26, 2006 By OWEN MCNALLY, Special to the Courant Sonya Kitchell, the 16-year-old wunderkind singer, composer and guitarist from Ashville, Mass., is on a dizzying roll of success that hits yet another peak Wednesday when she makes her Carnegie Hall debut. Kitchell performs in Carnegie's majestic Isaac Stern Auditorium - a holy of holies among world venues - as part of a star-studded salute to the legendary singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell. She'll be sharing the limelight on stage in Manhattan at the 2,800-seat house with such luminaries as Shawn Colvin, Suzanne Vega, Laurie Anderson, Tracy Chapman, Judy Collins, Amy Grant, Neil Sedaka and many others. Information: www.carnegiehall.com. Each performer gets to sing one Mitchell song. Kitchell has selected "Trouble Child." "I am so thrilled that I'm doing that," Kitchell says by phone from Los Angeles, a stop on her tour of performance centers in California, Washington state and Idaho. "First of all, I feel so honored to be part of the tribute because Joni Mitchell is one of my heroes. And, second of all, Carnegie Hall is so amazing," she says. - -------- Yes, we know how you feel, Sonya! Good catch, Patti. Game ball for you, my dear MVP. Speaking of Kitchell, I was talking to a friend of mine and Paz's, Jeff. He's soundman for the Neville Bros., Yes, Chris Squire and many others high-profile acts. He got to know Sonya when she did some gigs with the Nevilles. He says she's a sweetheart, in addition to being a prodigy. I'm going to meet her, before she gets too "big." She has a gig at the Living Room in Midtown NYC on the Thursday after the big Trib, before the Rockwood Night in the City. I'm thinking of checking out before Rockwood, just so's ya know. Might want to add it to your dancecard, if ain't fulled up yet. "And if you have your own picks, let's hear 'em - even if you're not going to be there." Well, far be it from a novice like me to take up the dare - except for the following: 1. If Judy Collins is there and doesn't do Both Sides Now, I will. And I won't. 2. If Tom Rush is there and doesn't do Urge For Going, nobody will. And somebody will. To show that I am a fan of Muller's ('Bob' doesn't get the job done on this list, nor does Bob M), I got an e-mail today from Ed Berenhaus, who did the Cyndi Lauper interview I posted about earlier. In said e-mail, he advised me that if I wanted to know about Joni covers, I should go to some website like allmusic or alllyrics or something (I can get you the site he cited, if you really want), which he said had "all the recorded covers of all the songs". I did, then I told him that I went there and where he could go (as we all know, people will tell you where they've gone, they'll tell you where to go) viz - straight to the Joni Undercover section of Jonimitchell.com. There, I explained, he could find - for example - a list of the 450 + covers of BSN and the 150 + covers of BYT, both numbers being well over twice the numbers documented on the aforementioned excuse for a research resource. Which means that if he knows the person who maintains that site and tells him where to go, it will be like stealing. With fans like me, who needs critics ? The motive for this particular blog is to ask a question. Don't the best of Joni's fans represented on JMDL not know that she has stated that she is no longer a musician? That she now classifies herself as a painter of words? Are we setting an example of allowing the artist the same freedom of choice we claim for ourselves? If we truly love Joni Mitchell for her ingenious artistic abilities, should we not follow the thread of consistency with unconditional love and understanding? As sad as it is to me that she does not want to be a musician any longer, should I not respect her decision? If I do, than I do not need a reason for her decision to attend, or not. It's just the way it is. I don't think the concert promoters have stated, implied or even hinted at the possibility of Joni attending. If they have, without her endorsement and commitment to attend, it was extremely unprofessional of them to do so. By hoping, assuming, or expecting her to be there at the time I purchase a ticket, I am certainly setting myself up for a disappointment. Her decision is hers, mine is mine. If she does not attend, I have no intelligent reason to be upset. Her life is hers, mine is mine. I am free to make the decision whether to attend or not, as is she. We do not know the details behind the planning and decision (when and where) to have this concert. Yet, many of us are making a judgment as though we do. Don't you think we should an example and give the artist the same freedom of choice we claim for ourselves. "The way I see it he said You just can't win it Everybody's in it for their own gain You can't please 'em all There's always somebody calling you down I do my best And I do good business There's a lot of people asking for my time They're trying to get ahead They're trying to be a good friend of mine I was a free man in Paris I felt unfettered and alive There was nobody calling me up for favors And no one's future to decide..."
