"mack watson-bush" - --Hmm. Without her fans she would not be Joni Mitchell, would she? She'd just be another lonely painter living who knows where. I don't get this attitude that performers are Gods that can do no wrong. Yes, she owes her fans. She owes them for the life that she lives, due to the money that they have provided her with to live that way. She owes them for giving her the adoration to make her, at least a little part of who she is, maybe a large part. These are not rich people, just little old folk trying to eke it out. Many have put out a lot to be there. Time, money, and heart. -------------- I have no such attitude that any performer is a god who can do no wrong. You may not have seen it yet, but in a subsequent post I mentioned that I actually agree with you that not all of Joni's music is of the same quality, although I went on to say that I wouldn't call it "crappy," just that some of it is below her own incredibly high standard. But I think that without her fans, Joni would still be Joni, and equally brilliant ... genius like that generally finds a way of expressing itself, no matter who's listening, or not. I agree that she should be grateful for the adulation and remuneration that have come her way, but that's very different than her owing her fans something. As both a fan and an artist myself, the way I read the contract is this: artist provides their best possible art, and the audience, if there is one, provides attention, and, hopefully, appreciation. Anything else -- for either party -- is gravy. -Fred ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jan 2006 04:57:59 -0800 (PST) From: Em Subject: Re: Whaaat? We talk about what we really feel good, bad, or ugly. In my opinion, Mack is following Joni's lead by sharing his feelings because Joni has done the very same thing in regard to not being appreciated. Whether you agree or disagree, isn't this what being on the Joni list is all about? I really wanted to see her at least once in the flesh but I probably would have passed out anyway if it had happened! (Ha! Ha!) Seriously, I don't know what coulda-woulda-shoulda happened here but Mack is being honest and that in my opinion should always be honored here. I stand by everyone's right to say what they feel here pro or con. It's the spirit of the list. On another Joni note, I watched part of a special on Amelia Earhart and had a chance to hear some of her writings recited...I was amazed at her skills! I can see how Joni would have been taken enough by her to pen a song after her. Listening to her and listening to Amelia's writings, I can really feel a kinship between them. Amelia makes perfect sense to me now how Joni speaks to Amelia. I feel they could have been sisters in another place and time. The move has caused a few bugs that I'm currently working through, if you notice any feel free to point them out to me. Two things in particular about the new site I'd like to point out: 1) A vastly improved search engine (over the jmdl.com function) indexes nearly every word on the site, making an incredible mountain of info readily accessible. 2) The new on-line discussion forum provides an avenue for discussion for those who may not like the email format. As it turns out, it is not cost effective to have an *amplified* music program at Citigroup Cafe, as I had envisioned Yeah. I know: "Boo. Totally boo!" But tell ya what we're gonna do! We're going to take a "song circle" approach to the event, a la Jonifest. I will bring my Guild JF-30 (jumbo) guitar, or there will a good-quality guitar provided, for use by those of us who would like to perform, unamplified or a cappella. How does that sound? The original reception performers announced will also still perform, albeit "unplugged." Please contact me or Michael Paz if you'd like to get a slot in the hour between 6-7. You can then say, in all honesty: "I played Carnegie Hall. 'Practice, practice, practice my ass.'" Or something to that effect. I may even launch my musical career there that night! ( I know: "Boo! Totally boo. :-) Seriously though. This is reception is going to be very, very special for the JMDL, folks. That I can promise. The Citigroup Cafe is absolutely gorgeous and a stunning venue for our pre-concert affair, according my reliable sources in NYC (I've never been to Carnegie Hall). And this Tribute Concert will rock! Look at the performers and expect the best music this planet has to offer. So lets face it, friends, the torch has been passed to a new generation of musician --born after the 60s, tempered by war, disciplined by a fragile and bitter peace, proud of Joni Mitchell's musical heritage--and unwilling to permit the slow undoing of those high musical standards to which she has always been committed, and to which we of the JMDL are committed (aren't we?). :-) So email me and cc: Michael (michael@thepazgroup.com) with your intent to play and what song(s) so's we can manage redundancy. Hello Mary Katherine I'm not sure that Joni portrayal as a bitter and deriding other artists is entirely honest on the part of the publication. Time and time again Joni has complained (in radio interview) that her words are taken out of context after the interview was conducted, that the interviewer would pursue a line of questions that would say 'Oh Rickie Lee thinks you're so-and-so, Suzanne claims that you can't write blah blah blah etc etc...' until Joni snaps and gets impatient and snipes at the aforementioned artist i.e. 'Well SO AND SO has no talent, her only talent being surrounding herself with talented peope to make her look good' or words to that effect which have appeared in print.... I don't think that after running the gauntlet of beng interviewed (which is usually being stuck in a hotel room sitting down for an hour with someone asking you the same question as the last person, who asked you a range of questions as 'what's your favourite colour? Who did you vote for? What does Kilauren use to dye her hair? Have you ever considered that your music is no good?Is your favourite colour blue or turbulent indigo? do you like sushi) For hours on end and can be very degrading/demoralising, all because you have to promote your album and your agent/record company requires you to do so because you're too old to be on MTV or VH1 in a promo.... For me, after a while, you either get very savvy about interviews (and don't say anything, get a label as a recluse) or you get very honest about the music 'biz' (and while the interviewer is all smiles, you get the label as being bitter and biting the hand that feeds her. Read other interviews (like the Elvis Costello interview a few years ago and the mood s completely different... why? Because Elvis interviewed her... hear her on radio and the view is more honest because it's harder to edit out audio than it is to cut and paste transcription... So all these 'views' on Joni being difficult and spiteful I take with a pinch of salt... like a handful... Welcome to the list! Hi Jim I just thought I'd send in my 2cents... To me it's another one of Joni's funny lines. We all know Picasso is a painter and I can imagine that Picasso is talking to Yvette, or to a friend as Yvette steps into the powder room, or even says the line to a friend while Yvette is there, shy, directly opposite Picasso in the circle of his companions at the table, a way of making his 'intentions' known. He would like to paint her, but after that, Picasso would like to indulge in his other passio, women. I dunno, that is the picture I see, to quote Rickie Lee Jones... This summer, as y'all know, was the Saskatchewan Centennial, and there was all this hoopla about the "Centennial Celebration". Of course, they wanted Joni to be a part of it, and they fought tooth and nail to get her to come and be a part of it. At first, they said she was a co-host for a day or two, but then it was just a big "she will be in attendance" thing and said they would pay tribute to her. So of course I buy 150 dollar tickets to the thing (300 dollars actually, as my sister, who went with me, hasn't ponied up with the money despite my hints and despite the fact she lives directly ACROSS THE STREET FROM ME, but that's another discussion) and all along I am thinking I am crazy because Saskatchewan talent is usually pretty hokey. Anyway, it's this formal thing, and turns out my seats are like 6 rows or something from the stage, and the frigging Queen of Engl and is literally parallel to my row in the royal box and she is 9 seats away from me, so that was kind of funny. And, I have to say, the whole thing was very good, and I don't regret it, but we waited until the end for Joan, and everyone from Buffy St. Marie to Leslie Neilson are performing, and then the big moment - it was so disappointing, because these performers come out and sing snippets of her songs, and she comes out and like waves basically, and doesn't say sweet bugger all, and then the thing is over. At the time, just seeing her was cool, but now that I think of it, I was so pissed off, and so was everyone else, because the entire province went to such a big deal to pay tribute to her and she doesn't even say thanks or "I love Saskatchewan" or whatever. I mean, she's never performed here, and doesn't do sweet bugger all to even acknowledge this event. So that makes me disappointed. No, she doesn't owe anyone anything, but I mean, come on.... Ok, vent over. Lori ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Jan 2006 22:22:39 -0800 From: Subject: Joni Tribute - Dos Centavos Hi all, I've been away for awhile buried in work and life but have been keeping up a bit with the tribute plans. Joni or no Joni you all are surely going to have a spectacular time. The artists performing at the tribute are incredible (I think hearing Sedaka do a Joni cover is almost worth the price of admission alone....and Allison Krauss and Judy and Nelly ... geez!) Hell the Rockwood event alone sounds amazing to me. Anyway, I remember Julius excitedly telling me when we saw Joni at the Commonwealth last March that she had mentioned maybe performing one song at a future "childrens' benefit" so there was some reason for high hopes here. (I did wonder if she may be put off by the NYC smoking laws and was hoping someone like Mayor Bloomberg could give her special dispensation or something). I recently read an item here in a local magazine about a new hot spot that Joni is frequenting in L.A. so I think she is O.K. But here is the first thought that came to my mind when I heard she would not be attending the tribute - she has elderly parents in their 90s and she is the only child. Having been there myself I will tell you that it is pretty much impossible to plan ahead for *anything* especially travel. One is very much "on call" 24/7. It's something to consider. To all who are going - have a GREAT time, bring us back lots of stories and maybe some ahem recordings. Wish I could see you all there and look forward to hearding all about it. And hey, maybe she and Lori will decide to catch a red eye after the long lunch at the Grill - heehee.
