Howdy Mags - thought about you this very day, as I read the new Rolling Stone with a lengthy Neil Young article/interview, and he made lots of references to Winnipeg. Matter of fact, many of the quotes from NY could have come from Joni herself, in terms of speaking of himself as a prairie person, and talking about artistic growth and stuff like that. Without her fans she would not be Joni Mitchell, would she? She'd just be another lonely painter living who knows where. I don't get this attitude that performers are Gods that can do no wrong. Yes, she owes her fans. She owes them for the life that she lives, due to the money that they have provided her with to live that way. She owes them for giving her the adoration to make her, at least a little part of who she is, maybe a large part. These are not rich people, just little old folk trying to eke it out. Many have put out a lot to be there. Time, money, and heart. > > Secondly, why on earth would Joni want to come in order to appease > fans with an attitude like this? - --And being angry about this doesn't make someone, me in this particular, less of a fan than a starry eyed one. After all, who said 'if you are feeling contempt, well then you tell it." That's my rant. Think what you want and I will defend your right to do so. mack ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jan 2006 22:01:19 -0600 From: "Michael Flaherty" Subject: Re: Shitting on her fans?! Does she owe fans who join an email list more than she owes fans who do not? (I'm certainly not more of Joni fan now than I was before I joined this list.) Perhaps she meet should individually with every fan in the world, including those without the internet, to tell them how much she appreciates them. I couldn't possibly go to New York for this, but I have been reading all of your posts as if I am going, have (and still am) excited for you, and thought (sincerely) "aww, that's too bad" when I heard she wasn't going to be there (if that's even what the letter means). However, I am quite certain that any decision Joni made had nothing to do with any of us. The idea that by turning down any offer (assuming there even was one) to participate in this event was not aimed at her fans, or that she owes us to turn up in NYC at a time we've selected, is absurd. After all, she never even hinted that she might want to do this concert, or that she was going to be there. This was an assumption (she's GOT to be there!) that snowballed into an accepted fact (she WILL be there!). Hmm. Perhaps. I don't suppose that it is any cheaper than deriding many other musicians and writers that don't seem to make the grade of Joni Mitchell, as she has done on numerous occasions. Everyone has opinions, even me. Some work of Joni's I find brilliant and have written so on many occasions, however; much is trite and not on par with some of the music put out by those she derides. I could be verbose and attempt to impress with colorful language or should I write that I could have. Glass houses are just that. I found the direct approach more suitable for what my intent was. And I would imagine that Joni Mitchell would be the first person to stand up and defend my right to my opinion of her, in this instance. mack ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 21 Jan 2006 21:43:47 -0800 From: "Paul" Subject: Re: Fuss Fuss and More Fuss I have to agree with Gerald's idea about smoking. Joni always seems to have her nicotine sources close by, and I wonder if Carnegie Hall just wouldn't allow an exception for her. (By the way, is it still legal to smoke in designated hotel rooms in NYC?) I am the lucky VIP ticket winner, and still feel very delighted and excited to be able to go. I am very much hoping that Joni somehow manages to make it. I had a dream last night where the JMDL was somehow sitting around a conference table and Les played a videotape of Joni, saying that she was hoping she'd see us at a get-together after the tribute concert. (Les, you don't have a videotape you're holding back, do you?) So, if the universe is telling me something by having me win the ticket, then maybe, just maybe, she'll find a JMDL group at a bar after the concert. (hope hope hope) In any case, we will have a night of Joni's songs to revel in together. paul m (in pdx) ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Jan 2006 01:51:07 EST From: Bobsart48@aol.com Subject: Re: I Used to be a King, the tribute et al Julius posted the lyrics to the captioned song (from Nash's 'Songs For Beginners', I think ?). Pretty obvious, I agree. I believe that song has appeared on a list of "songs about/for Joni" from the JMDL here - I forget the compiler - maybe Simon. Anyway, I was doing a little treadmill today (gotta start somewhere) and watching a CSN DVD - the acoustic one. Right at the end of Suite Judy Blue Eyes, and immediately before the beginning of Our House, I believe Graham Nash mumbles out "God bless you Joni", or some such. I'd go back and re-listen, but it's right at the end of the 10 minute or so SJBE track, and right before the Our House "track break". Can anyone confirm ? Over the years, CSN have been pretty supportive, IMO (notwithstanding the recently reported complaints from Crosby, who is no doubt a really bright and sensitive guy, but perhaps a bit less tolerant of others' questionable moments than others have been of his). And pretty obviously, still Joni lovers, too. Speaking of Joni lovers, days like this expose the complexities of emotionality in all of us, no ? Despite the complexity (the disappointment/hurt - and how will the performers' feel ? - followed by the range of emotions expressed earlier by others), at the end of the day, I really do empathize (at least, I imagine I can) with Joni's dilemma/ emotional conflict in situations such as this. And, I just hope she is well - physically and otherwise. On balance, I sense there is a lot of altruistic love for Joni here on the list. I hope she feels it. Like this. Although I speak in tongues Of men and angels I'm just sounding brass And tinkling cymbals without love Love suffers long Love is kind! Enduring all things Love has no evil in mind If I had the gift of prophecy And all the knowledge And the faith to move the mountains Even if I understood all of the mysteries If I didn't have love I'd be nothing Love never looks for love Love's not puffed up Or envious Or touchy Because it rejoices in the truth Not in iniquity Love sees like a child sees As a child I spoke as a child I thought and I understood as a child But when I became a woman I put away childish things And began to see through a glass darkly Where as a child I saw it face to face Now I only know it in part Fractions in me Of faith and hope and love And of these great three Love's the greatest beauty Love Love Love Bobsart ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Jan 2006 15:19:54 +0800 From: Jim Ayson Subject: Re: New Website Cool! It's a beautiful site, not just for joni fans, but by any definition it is a very well designed (and functional) piece of work, from the front end to backend database programming. Kudos to the design and development team!
