OK this is a stretch - but since I first heard this back in the mid seventies - I thought she may have been referring to - don't laugh - the cartoon character from the Archie comics. You know Reggie - Veronica always had the dude on a string. There was always a newfangled twist on the competition between old carrot top and Reg. He was Archie's rival for Ronnie's affection - though if I'm remembering correctly he had black hair. He was the typical BMOC in the strip. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jan 2006 16:56:06 +0000 From: "Patti Parlette" Subject: Joni Tribute -- getting organized Dear Joni Tribute Goers: As the excitement and anticipation build, Em and Cassy (and you know....) are dreaming flat tires, concerned that all the people at this party won't get to meet up. Of course we don't want to come out to the Big Apple here to face the dream's malfunction. Dreaming on my own dimes, I dreamt that we all met up at a Friendly's (go figure) and we couldn't push all the scattered booths together. The waitresses were all talking about zombies and Singapore Slings and would not help us at all (okay, that part I just made up!). We were all young girls, dressed in 1969-ish hippie flowered granny dresses. We all looked very young as we introduced ourselves. Someone had a huge wart in the shape of a mushroom on her nose (Joni's arm on the Hejira cover? Go figure again!), and she assured us that it didn't bother her, that real beauty is what's inside. And then Julius and Paz kept driving by in a huge white limo and we were all waving them down -- a little bit corny, wildflowers waving for you -- but they couldn't see us because there was no good reception, so they tuned us out! (Dreams, Patricia -- dreams and false alarms!) Shooby dooby, flip city! But now have a better dream. An "administrative coordinator" by trade, I am offering to do a little organizing, if anyone feels the need for that and would like to participate. I have lost track of who is coming and when and where. How many people are actually coming? Twenty? Thirty? Forty? I really don't know! "Guesses at most, guesses based on what each set of time and change is touching." I know Marianne had a list of people who are staying at (Peoples') Park Central, and a list of guesses for what song Joni would (will?) sing (WWJS?), but now she is busy attending to her father's needs. (Big hug of comfort and strength to you, Marianne!) I'lll try to keep myself open up to you and do my best to organize a list of who, what, when, where, etc. You can send me as little or as much information as you want -- we all have differents sets of circumstances when it comes to privacy needs, I know, I know, as we are orbiting around the sun. You may not want to be bound and tied to anyone. We love our Joni-loving, but not like we love our freeeeedom! If you want to be a free man in NYC, unfettered and alive, that's okay, too. So here is what I have in heart and mind. ALL THE PEOPLE AT THIS PARTY NAME:____________________________ NAME(S) OF ACCOMPANIST(S):____________________________ HOMEBASE (city, state, country):__________________________ HOTEL (where you will shower off the dust, ex: Empire, Fairmont, Cactus Tree, etc.): _________ TAXI INTO TOWN ARRIVAL TIME (ex: Tuesday, 1/31, p.m.):_____________________ DEPARTURE TIME (ex: Thursday, 2/2, leaving on the 1:15, darn right!) __________________ CELLPHONE NUMBER:____________________________ SEAT LOCATION:_______________________________ WWJS GUESS (ex: Circle Game):_________________________________ DISTINGUISHING PIN, NAMETAG, JONI BERET, etc.:_________________________ And then for the pre- and post-events/meet-ups, if the organizers (Casperjoni, Kenny B., Julius , Patrick, etc.) would send me the relevant info (place, times, etc.) I could include that, too. Yikes! I told you when I met you I was crazy. Our semester begins this Tuesday and it is crazy busy time. I hope I can do this list justice. Give me some time, I feel like I'm losing mine! I told my son Chris that I'm in Joni-overdrive and he said: "That is impossible, Mom. You can't get any worse." HA! Just watch me! Love, Patti P. Yup. Well said, Bob. You get the latest "Julie Z. Webb Award for Literary Critique". I guess you already know that "Golden Reggie" doesn't produce anything useful from a Google search. Also a search for "Reggie" comes up empty in Les' entire JMDL Library and in the jm.com site. Maybe she'll reveal his info in the biography. Jim L'Hommedieu Dayton Bob Muller said, > I think it's part of a pattern with Song For Sharon in that the song deals in specifics. Unlike BSN, which deals in generalities, universalities. We can immediately put ourselves into it. SFS, on the other hand, is a litany of specific recollections about Joni and her relationship/history with Sharon. Over and over again, there are SPECIFIC references: Staten Island Bleecker Street Dora Betsy Maidstone Reggie Wollman Rink The brilliance of the song is that we can STILL relate to the imagery that Joni's writing about, even though it's decidedly pointed at someone else. RR, I think Reggie is from Maidstone too. In addition to the context which you quoted, the lines before "Golden Reggie" are about school too. She keeps using "and" plus there are multiple school age references: Joni said, >>>When we were kids in Maidstone, Sharon I went to every wedding in that little town To see the tears and the kisses And the pretty lady in the white lace wedding gown *And walking home on the railroad tracks... "swinging on the playground swing" *And when I went skating after Golden Reggie>>> Plus, she keeps referring back to school days and updating the references to NYC: Maidstone "lady in the white lace" / NYC "storefront mannequin" Indian kids on a bridge/walk the girders of the Manhattan skyline and finally, skating after Golden Reggie / twenty-nine skaters on Wollman Rink (in NYC) Maybe Deb Messling would say she's using brides, Indians and skaters as archetypes. Jim PS, I like the cinematic quality to these lines. I "see" figures silhouetted against the sky. >Little Indian kids on a bridge up in Canada> >They can balance and they can climb> >Like their fathers before them> >They'll walk the girders of the Manhattan skyline> I think Joni's a pretty good story-teller. Right gang? Jim RR said, >>I would assume he was the fair-haired object of her affection, from the context of the song-probably her first heartbreak; He taught me first you get the kisses Then you give the tears But the ceremony of the bells and lace Still this reckless fool hears Or something like that>> ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jan 2006 12:21:22 -0800 (PST) From: Jahida Jorganes Subject: Re: onlyJMDL Digest V2006 #13 Ok, so I've decided that i am going to drive down to New York City from Vermont in the hopes that someone there will be able to sell me a ticket.
