Holger was interviewing Sid Shelman (not sure of the last name this morning), who was talking about Furry Lewis quite a bit. He said Furry was the most generous, kind man, very personable and welcoming. Holger asked about Joni's song Furry Sings the Blues, whether what she wrote could have been true. Sid said well he wasn't there so couldn't say for sure, but it very well might have been. What he did know was that Fuzzy was resentful to the end of his life that Joni had come to his home with Allan Ginsberg (someone will have to explain to me why that would bother him) and that she'd made money off this song and not given him any (and I don't know why she should give him money for a song she wrote, either, even if it's about him). Thanks! I have a question, but I'm unsure if you will be able to answer it. Please let me know if someone else will. I'm traveling just outside Lauren Canyon shortly, and I was thinking about driving through it, as I've never been there before. I was wondering if you know whether Joni's old house (where she lived with Graham Nash) is still there. I thought it would be awesome to see it with the knowledge that she wrote so many incredible songs in it. Please let me know if you have any information on it, if it's still there, and where on Lookout Mountain Rd. it would be if so. Please forward to anyone that may be able to answer. I'd greatly appreciate a response. Thanks! - -Josh ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jan 2006 10:45:08 -0800 From: "Rondi Marsh" Subject: Thanks for the Pandora site! Hi follow Joni fans. I am somewhat new to the group here although I have been reading your posts for the last few weeks. I am an elementary music teacher/songwriter from Yakima, Washington...you know apples, wine, etc..I am, of course,a fan of Joni as well as many of the other artists many of you admire that have been mentioned over the last two weeks. I can't recall who posted it a few days ago but thank you so much for the pandora.com link. I have enjoyed setting up radio stations of artists I admire. It is a great way to get familiar with some artists you might otherwise get to hear. I just donated some money to try to win those VIP tickets. It's a good cause and you never know-luck might just come my way! I have never seen Joni in concert except on my DVD of her-that would be an amazing once in a lifetime experience. Ha! I think you've changed the song forever for me! Regarding Furry's implied dislike of Allan Ginsberg, Ginsberg was a homosexual, a Buddhist, and a Jew. I know absolutely nothing about Furry, but if he was anything like Pat Robertson, those three things would be enough to send anyone of that ilk over the edge into non-Jesus-like words and deeds. Also, I can sorta understand Furry's resentment at being visited by a coked-up limoload of "beautiful people," one of whom eventually wrote an unflattering song that mentioned his false teeth and leg. The song has always made me a little uncomfortable in that Furry seems to be treated a bit like a sideshow curiosity. Maybe Joni is totally innocent of any 'wrongdoing' -- whatever that means -- but hers is a perspective Bonnie Raitt (for one) never would have taken, and this is a song Bonnie never would have written. - --Smurf __________________________________________ Yahoo! The pander to the worse in human nature by instilling fear and pitting Us against Them. In addition, every issue has to be white or black -- no shades of gray allowed. Unfortunately, it's an effective method for getting people to fall into line. Also, a populace that's constantly ripping itself to shreds is far less likely to look at the big picture or even realize there is one. So looking at both sides of an issue is now out. Shouting down and deriding anyone who disagrees with you is in. Love and compassion? You must be a wuss. Whatever happened to uniting for the common good? Hey, it's easier to control people when you polarize and tear down. I only wish this tactic was practiced by just one nutcase-pseudo-Christian-tele-evangelical. Unfortunately, it is filtering down and, sometimes unconsciously, you see it cropping up across the board in religion or politics or in your next door neighbor. "Another Borderline." Remember though, that the dividers hate honest discourse. The want you to see the world through their distorted filter -- always as Us versus Them. Em, you've been presented with a great opportunity. If you believe in the mission of the Patriot Guard, join them! It messes with the agenda of Parson Pat and his kind when you find common ground with someone from across the aisle. They can't compartmentalize you. They hate, hate hate it when you blur the Borderline but don't feel too sorry for them. After all, hate is their family business. Paul In MD - -- who also thinks that's it's all about power and money. Considering the subject matter, he also thinks that if Joni had released Dog Eat in Dog in 2006, she'd be hailed as the Wisest Sage. Then again, he doesn't understand why she wasn't hailed as the Wisest Prophet in 1985. Em wrote: There is this thing called "Patriot Guard" where if the family of a dead soldier so desires, this group of bikers accompanies the funeral procession and forms a guard at the funeral to keep the Phelps people away. They also want to keep away any anti-war groups which may see fit to picket at a soldier's funeral. Its so confusing. Anyway, I can't join these bikers in this, much as I would like to protest Phelps and KEEP THEM AWAY from the funerals. Reason is, most of the Patriot Guard are totally hawkish and repubs. I can't do it, altho I have to question my reasoning. If I stand with the Patriot Guard people then I'm standing with right wing hawks. If I do nothing, then....umm I'm part of the problem. HARD to see good and bad anymore. Em - --- Bob Muller wrote: > Does this bastard have no shame? It was a benefit concert, put on by Bill Graham's two sons, in honor of what would've been the rock impresario's 75th Birthday. Bonnie was a surprise guest and sang a couple songs with Jackson. The Neville Brothers were headliners. It sure pays to be a Friend-of-Paz. I hung out with Jackson for about 15 minutes watching Mickey hart's set. I was pleased to find that Jackson is just a sweetheart of a guy. He gave me a big ole bear hug when I thanked him for all his activism over the years. How I appreciated his always remembering the disadvantaged. I loved the gospel choir he had on stage backing him. His set was nothing short of inspirational. No, I did not ask him about Joan, as much as I wanted to. I like to think I took the high road, but it all I could do to keep from blurting out her name. :-) I got a picture with Jackson, but the dang flash didn't go off, so I've asked Rose if she can maybe brighten it up in Photoshop or something. Anyone know techniques on how to brighten a dark digital image...please advise? I had a few words and a toast to Bill with Carlitos Santana, too. The guy is living history. That Fillmore Auditorium is the house that he and Bill Graham built, for all practical purposes. Sigh. Those were the days, my friend, I thought they'd never end... Bobby Weir was there, as was Mickey Hart...both of the Grateful Dead, obviously.
