Flights, hotel, and tickets in the dress circle now booked and (more to the point) paid for. We need a holiday! We arrive in New York midday tuesday 31st and leave evening time on friday 3rd feb. Dermot is NOT a Joni fan. In fact, he quite passionately dislikes her. I am hoping that seeing other artists doing her songs might just convert him a little (he is a big fan of Bebel Gilberto and really likes Tracy Chapman and has been known to swing his behind along to the sweet sound of Destiny's Child:-) Any pre or post show gatherings would be great! We intend to do a lot of touristy things. I will have to appreciate a lot of architecture to make up for dragging Dermot to the tribute, lol. We have a few people to meet there (well, you know what the Irish are like - they are everywhere) and really just wanna have a larf. Hardly a day goes by that I don't uncover another one (part of that is that I've gotten damn good at finding them, plus I have lots of folks around the world helping me). Which brings me to ask - any JMDLer's in the Czech Republic (or with access to that market)? Of the Christmas releases that came out in 2005, one is a compilation of Czech artists and it features a...guess...RIVER! Meanwhile, Ron....send me those covers, dammit. Just wanted to post that I just read in one of our (very) local papers that the Museum of Photographic Arts in Balboa Park in San Diego will show Graham's exhibition titled "Eye to Eye" from Jan. 8 - April 3. I'll definitely be stopping by to see that one! The article also says that Nash is 'considered the father of digital printing.' I didn't know that. Well, let me know if any other SoCal listers would like to make a day of it. I'm game. Faster tempo and "poppier" than Joni's, but Cass gave it her own special style. Sounds very much like that late 60s period. The sound that Cass as well as The Mamas and The Papas produced back then was so distinctive. For some reason, whenever I think of Cass, I think of Karen Carpenter in tandem -- two great (and popular) singers whose careers were cut short in their prime. I had problems downloading as well but finally just kept toggling back and forth between the "too many downloaders" message and the "click link to download" message. It finally went thru. Thanks! It's got a beautiful melody and paints a picture of a specific place and time quite well. I think this is great "entry level Joni" that a wide variety of people might like. Cass had a huge following -- kids, their parents, rockers and the easy listening crowd. She got wide radio airplay on all types of stations and appeared on tv often. Her records sold well. As popular as Both Sides Now was for Judy Collins, I don't think Judy ever reached the wide audience that Cass did. Had Cass included this song on one of her albums, it would have been a major boost but it would probably have contributed even more to the detestable "Joni Mitchell as folk singer/songwriter" label. That being said, I'm not sure this song has the weight to be an A side single for Cass. Maybe a B side or, since she appeared on The Carol Burnett Show several times, perhaps she should have sung this during one of her appearances. I even have the backdrop for this number. As Cass sings, Carol and Harvey Korman portraying the Old Couple (what were their names -- Molly and Burt?) rock away on a porch in the background surrounded by pickling jars.
