What's happened to the Album Poll??!! I've been tracking it all year and suddenly all the scores have dropped out and gone back to zero!! I feel bereft! Hope the scores aren't lost after all the emotional energy I've invested in getting Mingus into the top ten (it was at number 9, it was at number 9!!!) John Southport, UK ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2005 04:16:24 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Mingus - from #9 to #0 Well John, if you know anything about the poll, you realize that it resets itself and begins anew each year. Adn we are pretty much at the end of the year, so there you go. So, like Sisyphus, all your energies have rolled down the hill and you have to start over. Make like a good stripper and start working the poll, my friend. Bob NP: Sufjan Stevens, Illinoise (which I bought after seeing it on all the critics' lists and I don't regret it one bit. - --------------------------------- Yahoo! for Good - Make a difference this year. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2005 08:33:33 -0500 (EST) From: "Gerald A. Joni bells, Joni bells, Joni all the way.... I just had a great Joni conversation, totally unexpected, in the ole workplace. Don't you love it when that happens? Spontaneous Joni-combustion! (that's my "sjc" tag -- lol!) One of our German graduate students was just in my office and we were chatting, when he spied the WWJD magnet (thanks again, Patti W.!) on my metal desk organizer. He asked: "What would *JONI* do?" Me: "Oh, that's Joni Mitchell. I just loooooove Joni Mitchell. Do you know who she is?" (I'm mentally preparing myself for the oft-asked and disappointing question: "Joni who?") Steven: "YES! I love Joni Mitchell!" (UH OH! Here we go again....put a quarter in the Wurlitzer....lol!) Me: "Get out of here! Are you serious?" Steven: "Yes! I first heard her in Canada, when I lived in Montreal. A friend of mine said 'you just have to hear this singer' and she played the Blue album for me. A Case of You is the most moving song I have ever heard in my life." Me: "Oh, I know, isn't it beautiful? You are in my blood like holy wine......What about Blue? What about Hejira? yada yada yada Joni this, Joni that, Joni this.....OOOH! You have to see this!" (I turned to my computer and showed him my Joni screen-saver, the JMDL home page, and my profile picture that was taken at this very desk, and then I showed him the musicforyouth screen with the beautiful painting of our Joan and the list of possible performers, and then my actual tickets for Carnegie Hall, etc. LOL - -- It's "Joni Show and Tell Time" in the Humanities Building in UConn Morning Town!) Steven: "Wow! That is soooo cool!" I told him how excited we all are about the tribute. He "got it." He told me his partner in Colorado is a big Tori Amos fan, and how he made a lot of friends from that list, and that she does a great cover of ACOY, and that his partner got to meet her before a show in Boulder and asked her to play a particular song. She didn't know if she could fit it in, but said she'd try. She ended up playing it as her last song (encore? I don't know...) and started crying while singing it. Steven could not remember the actual title of the song, but said it had this line in it: "It's time to say goodbye now." (Muller will know...lol!) Later on, his partner was able (through the list) to get a tape of the concert, and enjoyed re-living it time and time again. I guess Tori pointed at him in the audience and "yelled" at him for making her cry. (I'm not sure if I'm getting the details right here because I'm still in a state of unexpected Joni arousal....sorry!) We shared how neither one of us had ever been to Carnegie Hall before, and how special special special this is. I told him about Julius meeting Joni in the elevator and how she said she'd perform one more song at a children's music benefit maybe, and I explained the significance of the bookend dates of February 1st at Carnegie Hall. Steven is moving to Charlotte, so I told him we had a JMDLer in Chapel Hill (Hi Joseph!), but he said that Charlotte is far from Chapel Hill and is actually closer to SC (so of course I told him that our Covers King is from SC and is even named SCJoniguy -- Hi Bob!). We talked for a good half hour and it was fun fun fun. I made him promise to get MOA (he said he liked live shows). Isn't it loverly when you can connect with someone over Joni, out of the BLUE? (LOL...I heard Mary and Linda in the outer office warning a visitor who asked if I was in today: "Yes, but I wouldn't go in there now if I were you!") Me (talking to myself now): "OKAY! Stop the Joni bells. Coffee break over. Back to work, you Joni nut!!!" I hope you are all having a lovely holiday season filled with the simplest and sweetest of pleasures (unless, of course, you prefer complicated and bitter....chacun a son gout, since we call come from such different sets of circumstance). Stunning in its lack of response, that is. :-) As of right now, if you donate $10, you have a 50% chance of winning. The Music For Youth organization does great things to promote a culture of music in the nation's schools. Your contribution helps further their two primary missions: 1) To identify, fund and lend our experience to innovative programs that make quality music education available to young people. 2) To create scholarship opportunities for exceptionally talented youth who choose to make music their life's work, thereby helping to sustain the next generation of artists and teachers. Other benefits: 3) Your contribution gets you a shot at rubbing elbows with Judy Collins, Laurie Anderson, Keren Ann, Joseph Arthur, Sonya Kitchell, Tracy Chapman, Marc Cohn, Cowboy Junkies, eels, Bebel Gilberto, Amy Grant, La India, Bettye LeVette, Me'shell N'degeocello, Jimmy Scott, Neil Sedaka, Joanne Shenandoah, Suzanne Vega, Dar Williams, Michelle Williams, The Wood Brothers, and of course, Miss Mitchell. 4) Your odds are much better than winning the Powerball lottery. 5) You'll be the envy of all at the post-event Jonifest as they grapple for position in front of you while you wax eloquently of your intimate conversations with your pals Neil and Judy. How can you possibly resist making a donation now?? :-) Thanks in advance, Les PS - The spell check would like to change "Joniphiles" to "Homophiles". Just thought you'd like to know. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2005 11:34:39 -0700 From: "Les Irvin" Subject: VIP ticket (part 2) Oops... For out of state folks, the cost of the ticket is just a small portion of the cost (airfare, hotels, car rental, etc.). As a result, the majority of the people probably wouldn't be able to go even if they won the ticket. What could be more depressing then that - having a ticket and not being able to go! This could possibly even discourage people from donating. Just my 2 cents. I have 4 extra tickets available for the show. The friends I got them for are now unable to go. (Their loss!) They are all great seats in the Parquet section and much better than anything you can get now. I am selling them at my cost. I don't have the tickets with me as I am on vacation away from home. I'm pretty sure they are Parquet Row H - Seats 9 & 11 and Row O - Seats 5 & 7. Please contact me offlist at WirlyPearl@aol.com. or my cell at (954) 815-5116. Ovation is an arts/music network that is available on DISH satellite network and various cable companies. I think this is the first time it has aired in the US (at least for a very long time). APPEAL : Someone with both DISH network and a dvd recorder please record this! btw on Dec 30 (same times) they will show the In Concert with Crosby and Nash. This is a rarity, too: they have shown Neil Young, James Taylor & Cat Stevens alot but not these.
