Most of you know what a Dar Williams fan I am and her appearance was the deciding factor - in fact, I've often asked if/when she'll cover a Joni song so... this evening will be my personal nirvana (not a clue what she'll be singing - my subject title is just a guess... :-) Our tickets are Row M in Prime Parquet - yesssssssss... Hi Everybody Well I am back since last Thursday, but am finally together enough to post about the ride of a life time. As you all probably already know I was hired to do the sound for the entire Arlo Guthrie and Family and Friends tour. Thanks to my friend Klondike (Klondike Sound Company of Massachusetts) I was chosen which led me to being the Stage Manager on the tour as well as being the conduit to getting a certain New Orleans singer/songwriter (JACK NEILSON) on the tour. A few days before the tour they told me that Arlo could not play a full set on the Chicago show because of a contract to play there soon, so they did not have a headliner. Having donated a new Yamaha Motif keyboard to Norman Caesar (Cyril Neville's nephew) I had seen Cyril and Norman when they came to pick up the keyboard at my house a week before. Cyril asked me how things were going and if I had any work so I told him about the Arlo tour and he proceeded to tell me that he had just recorded one of Woody Guthrie's songs called "Mean Things (happening in this world)". Phew! Are you getting goose bumps yet? Which of course led me to tell Abe Guthrie about that and why didn't they ring Cyril and ask him to come on the tour. Sure enough it all worked out for Cyril, his wife Gaynelle, and Norman to join us on the tour for Chicago and Kankakee. I was elated! Anyways I flew up to Chicago and had a day to visit a dear old friend that I know thru list member Diane Evans and enjoy a 4 inch snow fall and wonderful dinner. I tried to hook up with my pal Fred Simon who had a gig that night in the city, but because it was snowing so hard we missed the train into the city and my friend did not want to drive in so I was forced to miss it. I understand he played several Joni songs that night just to make me feel worse. It would have been too cool to see him play. The next day I had a martini in the afternoon with Arlo and his wife Jackie and met the rest of the family (son Abe, daughters Kathy, Annie, and Sarah Lee) and the rest of the musicians and friends that made up the traveling musical relief extravaganza. My nephew Nick arrived and whisked me off to downtown Chicago for dinner at Shaw's Crab House for a dinner that could not be beat. December 5th was our first show at The Vic and my love affair with the entire family. We sound checked everyone in the afternoon and I was able to get a preview of what was to be for the next two weeks. When Jack was doing his first sound check at the Vic Arlo and his wife Jackie (who filmed the entire thing) came out and sat in the house and laid down on a bench and listened to Jack play and sing. He was totally blown away and from then on introduced Jack as his new friend and gushed about his musical prowess. After sound check Cyril had still not arrived to the venue so we had some downtime. Arlo's pedal steel-mandolin-banjo-guitar player named Gordon Titcomb (formally with James Taylor and Paul Simon et al) was noodling Beatles tunes and of course we all know that is a BAD thing to do around me. I started singing along with him and at that point I knew I was doomed on this tour. The Burns Sisters joined us a the next thing you know we had a hootananny happening on stage. Cyril finally showed and we did rehearsal with him and when he finished I asked him why Sister Rosa was not on his set list. He looked at me and said, "Thanks for reminding me brother!" So we rehearsed that as well. The first show was amazing even tho Arlo only played a couple of songs. There were NO STARS on this tour at all. Everyone was helping with load in and load out and after the show it only took us and hour and a half to load out and then we went back to the hotel to have cocktails and play music till I crashed at 5am. Ridin' the train was really special cause of the song and mostly cause of the people that we were with on the train. We sang and played and had cocktails and eat and talked and well you know... As we left Chicago on the first leg, Jack and I were sitting together across from Arlo and Jackie and little Olivia (Sarah Lee and Johnny's daughter) was playing in the aisle and I flashed on the fact that this is Woody's GREAT grand daughter. Phew! I'VE got goose bumps just from the memories. We did shoes in Chicago, Kankakee, Champaign, Effingham, Carbondale, and Memphis before boarding the train to New Orleans. We had so many jam sessions on the train and in the hotel. I kept saying that it was like being at camp and I never wanted it to end. The media attention was extraordinary and I did about 20 interviews with NBC, CBS, CNN, as well as many radio stations and newspapers. The players on this tour were amazing. You guys need to check out the following folks cause I know you will love them as much as I do. Sarah Lee Guthrie & Johnny Irion-Exploration Xavier-Full Circle (This is Abe Guthrie's band and they travel with Arlo a lot) The Burns Sisters-They are friends with our very own Patti Witten. Their voices are amazing and they were a boatload of fun. Current album is "Out of the Blue". Folk Uke-This is Kathy Guthrie and Amy Nelson (Willie's daughter). You will die laughing and enjoy their simple and beautiful songs. This one also earned a parental warning label. Ramsay Midwood-Shoot Out At The OK Chinese Restaurant-Ramsay was a gas too work with. He is a great songwriter and I can't wait to hear the live recordings of him with a bunch of the other musicians playing on his sets. Gordon Titcomb-The Last Train-I spoke about him earlier and he is an amazing musician. John Flynn-Dragon-John has a beautiful voice and is a great songwriter and player. He wrote a song about John Ashcroft that is fecking hysterical. I would post web sites for all these folks but it just as easy to Google them and this post won't look like the Sears Catalog printed out. There were so many special moments along the way and I will never forget the blessing of this experience. I am very proud to have been a part of Arlo's effort to help the music community in the Gulf Coast region. I will probably write a part 2 of this tour and talk about the New Orleans part of the tour. Below are some pics from the Arlo site that someone posted. I have a bunch that I need to post somewhere. http://www.tupelo88girls.org/IMG_4619.JPG http://www.tupelo88girls.org/IMG_4653.JPG http://www.tupelo88girls.org/IMG_4654.JPG http://www.tupelo88girls.org/IMG_4670.JPG http://www.tupelo88girls.org/IMG_4672.JPG http://www.tupelo88girls.org/IMG_4689.JPG http://www.tupelo88girls.org/IMG_4693.JPG http://www.tupelo88girls.org/IMG_4703.JPG http://www.tupelo88girls.org/IMG_4705.JPG http://www.tupelo88girls.org/IMG_4709.JPG Happy Christmas to everyone.
