I recall someone mentioning a Joni cover group called, Big Yellow Taxi. Aside from the stupid name for the group, they are actually very good. Musically and instrumentally. OK, for those who don't like covers that are too similar to Joni's original, you won't like it. I love it. especially the choice of songs. Songs on iTunes Australia are $1.69 each. I bought 3 from this group - The Dawntreader, Passion Play and Sunny Sunday. I also found another Joni cover on there and purchased it. Of course, as a gay man, I'm always intrigued by a male doing one of Joni's torch songs to a former lover such as Brian Kennedy's beautiful version of A Case of You and Kind of Like Spitting's stark version of The Last Time I saw Richard. Well, I found another gem - Willy by Richard Isen. I believe he is from San Francisco. The artist is listed incorrectly on iTunes as Joni Mitchell. Now, all I need is a male doing the only actual gay themed song Joni wrote - Two Grey Rooms. Bob, if you need any of these for the covers CDs, let me know. I do believe in sharing music so, that goes for everyone. Woke up / Get out of bed / Grabbed a comb across my hair... And there it was! Another volume of Joni's Covers and Contributions (71!) at my reach... A Thousand Thanks, Bob! I'm enjoying it right now... Joellen Lapidus' Carey is a very amusing cover: of course her voice isn't... but it's a very fine rendition, though (and some history from the dulcimer luthier!) Dennis Caplinger's Big Yellow Taxi: I really love these nice instrumentals... Artists in Resonance's Woodstock: oh! I'm getting old'n weaker but that brings me tears to my eyes. Very enjoyable a cappella cover, IMHO Ellen Metzger's Two Grey Rooms: the trumpet is very very beautiful! it's a pity it takes the place of the piano, but... you can't have everything! ... and Wait! I've still got a lot of Both Sides Now to listen to! I'm in Heaven! (but I've got to prepare to carry some 15 children to watch the Narnia movie so... Les - -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Lawton Sent: Wednesday, December 07, 2005 9:41 AM Greetings JMDL, Here is a very special holiday treat for the JMDL community. On Earth Day of this year, I had the rare pleasure of hosting Joni as a speaker at the Commonwealth Club of California, where she spoke to a sold-out audience of around 400. The audio of her speech has been posted on the Club's website at http://www.commonwealthclub.org/archive/05/05-04mitchell-audio.html I know that you and the rest of the JMDL community will enjoy this recording. I am working on posting a text transcription and will alert you when it is available. It is possible that the Club may broadcast this recording via public radio on or around Earth Day 2007, but this would depend on the level of interest that the program generates on-line, so I urge all JMDL members to spead the word, and point as many people to the Club's website as possible. Keep up the good work! Be there or be square, Angelinos. Hello All On Saturday, December 17th at 2.30pm sharp @ Barnes & Noble - 189 The Grove in Los Angeles (3rd & Fairfax, behind the Farmers Market) Claire will be reading a chapter from her fab book Plus One: A Year In The Life Of A Hollywood Nobody about the time when Her Royal Holiness Joni Mitchell came to our house. We will then be doing a rendition of Big Yellow Taxi where Claire is in fact uncannily good at the oooooooo bop bop bop bit. If only she could stick to the harmony part on the rest of my repertoire, as then she might actually be of some real use to me on the road, but oooooooooooooooh no, she just always HAS to start singing the melody at the top of her lungs which is of course no use to man or beast, what with that being my job and all! Also, I am going to do a set of songs some old faves, a new song, and a couple of Christmas carols, including a duet of Silent Night with the marvelous Judith Owen. So come on down and get Merry. In addition to all of this Holiday spirit, Judith and her ridiculously talented husband Harry Shearer, will be having a Holiday Sing-A-Long at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in LA on Wednesday, Dec 14. I will be joining Judith for Silent Night and I will be singing Have Yourself A Merry Christmas. I am a fan of Julia Fordham and saw her in concert in Manila a few years ago. After Larry Klein's work on her "Concrete Love" CD, I thought that it wold only be a matter of time before she will cover a Joni song. Which is becoming a rare occurrence for singer-songwriters (i.e. to cover someone else's songs). Most songwriters, when singing their own compositions go the American Songbook route. I also like Judith Owen a lot. She, like Susan Werner, released a jazz album without resorting to singing the staples from the repertoire of Gershwin, Arlen, Porter, Berlin, etc. Hope Julia will record "Blue Motel Room" which will suit her lustrous contralto to a T.
