("Love is a story told...") It comforts me to know that others get this crazy feeling ("I'm in trouble again!") when they see a look-alike from Joni's history book. I am constantly being teased when I think someone looks like someone else, especially when it involves Joni. (And when you have chronic JMOCD, what *doesn't* involve Joni? I see something of Joni's self in everyone, just at this moment of the world.) A recent example: this summer, flying out west, my son and his girlfriend and I were lucky enough to get bumped up to first class -- yee haah! Right where we belong! As I lowered myself into the plush and ample leather aisle seat, I glanced at the man with the receding hairline next to me in the window seat and got a start. Was it James Taylor? OMG! Why, it just might be! He was on tour then (I had just seen him June 17th), and it was not impossible that he could be in first class out of Cincinnati. My heart started racing and I could not bring myself to look him in the face (I get so damned timid -- not at all the spirit that's inside of me!). I kept casting sideways glances at his knees and feet and getting all silly inside. Boat shoes. Really nice socks. Surely JT would wear boat shoes and really nice socks, right? And nice jeans...with long legs -- long lonely legs. And a nicely TAYLORED shirt -- at least at the cuffs. And his hands - -- oh, yes! They looked like guitar-player hands. Impossibly gentle, yet strong, sinewy, string-plucking, song-writing, Joni-loving, Carly-loving hands. (As you can see, I was getting myself into quite a state there...lol!) "I'm drinking sweet champagne, got the headphones up high, can't numb you out, can't drum you out of my mind..." Finally, I oh-so-casually reached down under the seat for my satchel, found my check book, and quickly scribbled a note on the back of a bank deposit slip (I didn't have the back of a cartoon coaster) and tapped Chris's shoulder across the aisle and handed it to him: "I can only look out of the very corner of my eye, but is my seatmate JAMES TAYLOR???? ; ) " Chris looked over at me and my seatmate, rolled his eyes, and just shook his head. ("There she goes again", I know he was thinking!) Oh well, ya never know! But good thing it *wasn't* him. If I didn't completely freeze up, I most likely would have gone into full-blown JMOCD and prattled on about Joni (and our JMDL) all during the flight. He probably would have asked the pilot to turn this crazy bird around and get this twisted chick off the flight, or have asked to be moved to another seat or something....lol! So, I can completely understand how your dishwasher-installer Croz look-alike guy could set you off, Lindsay. You never know when something or something will spark those Joni moments that segue into telling stories and rummaging for dog-eat-dog-eared beloved old books or buying new books and playing music and you know..... I think you were very wise (you knew the borderline!) *not* to put on a CD - -- that might have completely weirded the guy out and you'd be washing dishes by hand the rest of your life! And the Joni Mitchell pillowcases???!!!! OMG! Where can we get them??? All I want for Christmas is a Joni Mitchell pillowcase!!! Think of the dreamlands we could have! And Joni Mitchell wallpaper for my kitchen! Thank you so much, Mark from Sydney, for all the wonderful pics. I hope you enjoy making them as much as we enjoy seeing them. I wonder: if I bought some continuous feed printer paper, could I make "real" wallpaper for my kitchen? Do they make scrubbable computer printer paper? Or should I just go with the yellow checkers? With a wink and a smile, Patti P. P.S. I'll be "comin' around again" in just a bit with a review of Carly's concert in CT on November 20th. She was absolutely awesome and I need a bit more time to gather my thoughts into a coherent post that isn't too moony and Juney and dizzy-dancing feeling (although I can't promise that that feeling won't stay with me). Date: Tue, 29 Nov 2005 12:09:50 -0800 From: "Lindsay Moon" Subject: David Crosby Lookalike! VLJC I just got a new dishwasher (oh, the joys of suburban life!) and who is at my door to install it today but a man who looks *exactly* like David Crosby. Of course I nonchalantly ask if anyone's ever told him he looks like ... and he interrupts me, shaking his head, to say, "If I had a nickel for everytime someone asked me that." And damn if he didn't *sound* just like him. Of course I couldn't help myself (you know, being so excited about the dishwasher and everything) and said I was a Joni Mitchell freak and David had discovered her. He didn't know that, but admitted some confusion at differentiating Joni, Judy, Carly, etc. I then went and found David's autobiography, "Long Time Gone" and showed it to him. He started looking through the pictures and agreed the resemblance was pretty strong (uh, no, identical). I was one step away from going to the CD player to get my "If Only I Could Remember My Name" CD by Crosby. That I decided was a little too weird. The poor guy does have his own personality and life no matter how much I'd like him to be David Crosby and talk about the old days. He did say he's gone to see musicians perform before and found that they stare at him, probably thinking David is coming to check them out. I suggested he look for David touring with his son Jeff Pevar and go up and introduce himself. The whole thing was kind of freaky and in honor of the occasion, I've gone online and ordered the book "Hotel California ..." about the Southern California scene in the late 60's/early 70's (recommended by someone on the list and now I can't thank them because I must have deleted it). I started leafing through Crosby's book again and noticed I had a page dog-eared. I think I've written this to the list before, that it said, (by Mac Holbert, referring to one of the CSNY tours) "You would go to your hotel room and you would pull back the cover on the bed and there would be your pillows, which would have custom-made pillowcases on them with a Joni Mitchell logo for the 1974 tour, silk-screened in five colors on your pillowcase." Dang, I should have run away from home! Great song and the sound quality was superb. I'd read through the lyrics of some of Joni's early unreleased songs on JM.com and I tried to imagine what they might sound like. I'm on the digest, so perhaps this has already been answered, but from where did this song come? I assume it was a Canadian tv show. This list has opened my eyes to new artists that I certainly would not have learned about on my own. The really thrilling thing, though, is when a recording like this surfaces. I had never heard this song, never read the lyrics (or didn't remember them), really had no idea it existed. We all lament that Joni is no longer releasing new material but, when something like this is shared with the list, for me it is like she's just released a brand new single. Mind you, a song written and recorded by a gravelly voiced Joni in 2005 would be my first choice but a song written and recorded by a helium voiced Joni in 1967 is almost as good. A huge thank you to Richard and Catherine and especially Bob (and there are lots more of you out there -- these three just came to mind first) for sharing these treasures -- Joni's unreleased, her live performances, her alternate versions as well as other artists' music -- with us.
