I suppose at first I should have tried dipping him into some shallower Joni waters but I threw him in the deep end of the pool and he sunk like a stone. The thing I didn't understand was that even though he didn't care for the melodies, I find Joni's lyrics on that recording read like poetry. How can't you get that? I'll vote for "lovely" however. It just seems more Joni-like to me, especially in the somewhat-precious language she sometimes used in her early work (yes, Blue is early). It also seems more visually, emotionally and poetically descriptive to me than the "rather" option. As for evolving hair color in her mature years, well, I've seen no very recent photos, so I have no idea. But, about hair -- I've always assumed Joni is a natural blond (just always seemed to be), but I was a little stunned a few years back when I saw her photo in one of those Vanity Fair music edition spreads (I think Emmylou and Stevie Wonder were in the same photo) -- and she had noticably dark roots (looked fabulous overall though). VLJC I just got a new dishwasher (oh, the joys of suburban life!) and who is at my door to install it today but a man who looks *exactly* like David Crosby. Of course I nonchalantly ask if anyone's ever told him he looks like ... and he interrupts me, shaking his head, to say, "If I had a nickel for everytime someone asked me that." And damn if he didn't *sound* just like him. Of course I couldn't help myself (you know, being so excited about the dishwasher and everything) and said I was a Joni Mitchell freak and David had discovered her. He didn't know that, but admitted some confusion at differentiating Joni, Judy, Carly, etc. I then went and found David's autobiography, "Long Time Gone" and showed it to him. He started looking through the pictures and agreed the resemblance was pretty strong (uh, no, identical). I was one step away from going to the CD player to get my "If Only I Could Remember My Name" CD by Crosby. That I decided was a little too weird. The poor guy does have his own personality and life no matter how much I'd like him to be David Crosby and talk about the old days. He did say he's gone to see musicians perform before and found that they stare at him, probably thinking David is coming to check them out. I suggested he look for David touring with his son Jeff Pevar and go up and introduce himself. The whole thing was kind of freaky and in honor of the occasion, I've gone online and ordered the book "Hotel California ..." about the Southern California scene in the late 60's/early 70's (recommended by someone on the list and now I can't thank them because I must have deleted it). I started leafing through Crosby's book again and noticed I had a page dog-eared. I think I've written this to the list before, that it said, (by Mac Holbert, referring to one of the CSNY tours) "You would go to your hotel room and you would pull back the cover on the bed and there would be your pillows, which would have custom-made pillowcases on them with a Joni Mitchell logo for the 1974 tour, silk-screened in five colors on your pillowcase." Well Joni and Crosby were a couple for a while before she took up with Graham Nash... Crosby apparently still has a soft spot for Joni (even though he did compare her ego to Mussolini's) . My favorite Crosby quote as related by Joni herself had to do with Crosby picking up one of his guitars after Joni had gone through it and retuned it to one of her 60-odd tunings. He'd try to play it, and then say "Oh, the Martians were here." Joni got a kick out that, she would mention it in a zillion interviews. - - jim ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Nov 2005 22:01:41 -0800 From: Annie Subject: Re: Joni's Hair and Weight I'm very much a lurker here, but I'll speak up today to agree with arkay. I just wanted to say thanks again for all the lovely feedback I've gotten for my desktop pics. I certainly would continue to visually express Joni's songs without it but, I wouldn't be sharing it if you guys didn't appreciate it the way you do. Joni would say that her songs are open to personal interpretation and these wallpapers are surely my own interpretations of her songs. They are a wonderful rediscovering experience for me. Many of Joni's fans are not in favour of her work from the 1980s and I have to admit that I tend to brush over them too but, this experience has made me re-examine them. The songs from the '80s I have tried to visualise has made me look further into them than I had before. As you may have noticed, I have quoted a line from each one so, therefore, I've had to examine the lyrics. One thing I've noticed is that Joni's lyrics never got any simpler or less poignant in the '80s. The only thing that changed was the instrumentation and I guess that is what put some people off. Especially with electronics experimenter, Thomas Dolby. When you read the lyrics without the music, it highlights the deep thought processes she was still going through. Sure, most are angry but still thought provoking. Some are anger expressed at corporations and government but some are dealing with the anger towards individuals too. As in, Nothing Can Be Done. What do you do when someone you are faithful to has an affair with someone else and believes the love had already gone? "There are no victimless crimes I know of". Or finding that personal shield where one can find healing and the enormous risk in allowing someone to get so close to you that you reveal the secret to that method of healing in My Secret Place - "It's a place no amount of hurt and anger can deface". I don't think there is one single song of Joni's that I can't appreciate for what it is. I continue to learn from Joni life lessons that are invaluable. Visually expressing those lessons helps me to bring together life and art. Long live the '80s :-) That's my 2c. Mark in Sydney. NP A Bird That Whistles (Corrina, Corrina) - JM PS I enjoy getting requests but, I will eventually do a wallpaper for every Joni song anyway. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Nov 2005 23:00:08 -0800 (PST) From: "Kay Ashley" Subject: LAST CHANCE @ THE C-NOTE -- 12/1 @ 7 pm Hello Joni Listas, I'm forwarding this mass missive to you all in hopes that perhaps some NYC--area peeps may want to come out and hear my last show EVAH at the C-Note, because the C-Note is closing...
