Greetings, Paul, and welcome. Any friend of spirit is a friend of mine. Thanks for delurking and it would be great if others would do so as well. Some of Joni's music can take a while to get into, but it's definitely worth sticking around for. And I could really relate to so much of it; my own love of hearing Help Me on the radio but not getting fully dipped in the art of Joan until an unintentional sideways exposure to Hejira, and then filling in/keeping up from there. Also with you on the vocal mastery she exhibits on Mingus - pretty amazing. Thanks for the post, maybe it will inspire some other folks to chime in as well. I can relate to your post. Song for Sharon was the tune that got me back to Joni as well. Like you, I was very familiar with the material on Court & Spark, but when I heard SFS one day in a cafe in Montreal, (I was helping a friend install a show of his paintings) it stopped me in my tracks. Who is that? I asked. I held on to that feeling of resonance and bought the album within the next few days. Over the years, I have continued to add her records and cds to my collection as they came out. I have all but one, Clouds. It's the one album I've never really heard in its entirety. I always heard "rather", and in fact never considered "lovely" until your post. As she's unhappy to be there (quit this crazy scene) and would need northern weather to fulfill her wish to skate on the river, I'd stick with the meaning "rather". My girlfriend's roommate had the Hejira album lieing on the floor beside her stereo. I put it on. Had a friend over and told him he had to hear this. I hadn't really listened to it "well" but I knew I liked it. I could not wait to get by myself and put it on with the lyric sheet out. It blew me away just as I thought it would. I was like you. I had heard some Joni on the FM, and in the dorm rooms down the hallways. But never really bought any. I was a hard rocker Deep Purple, Hendrix, Zeppelin......My musical interests slowly changed with Pink Floyd, Genesis and Yes. This, I feel was preparing me for Joni, in some odd way. Then, at the beach, a girl friend of mine had HOSL by her bed. I thought I must find out. And, well you know the deal. I went and bought everything she did, except for her first two. I eventually got those of course. She's my all time favorite artist and Hejira my favorite all time album. Followed closely by Jefferson Airplane, and Genesis (pre Abacab). I'm sure others have similar stories. Enjoyed reading your some of your Joni life Paul.
