It was also nice listening to Joni's live take in 95 - I was not familiar with that either. I have to say though that what Joni does with this song on Travelogue is great: you can hear anger in the orchestra too. Have you ever tried searching for Joni Mitchell in iTunes Music Store? In the UK, it comes up with some weird results alongside the standard albums. For instance, Dwyane and Jeff have a song titled "Joni Mitchell" in their Rubber and Glue album; Uncle Seth's cover of Both Sides Now, and a whole tribute album by a band called Big Yellow Taxi with 12 Joni's songs. I'm sure you know them all though... That's Vince Mendoza's work, a brilliant orchestral composer/arranger/conductor. He's done really great stuff, both on his own and in collaboration with others. Travelogue is definitely a great work of art. - -- Nicola Larosa - nico@tekNico.net How wonderful the world would be if his behaviour and attitude was the default among rich people - using his money with a vision to improve the world, instead of getting 8 sportcars and a larger penis. -- barkholt on Slashdot, October 2005, referring to Mark Shuttleworth ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Nov 2005 03:48:41 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: sex kills and other covers Hi Raf - I've got all of those covers; the Uncle Seth BSN just came out as a CD-single a couple months ago, it rocks fairly well too. Big Yellow Taxi was Henning and Christina from Denmark, they came to the 2002 Jonifest and won everyone over. I've seen the Dwyane & Jeff track but haven't heard it. Believe me, I've typed "Joni Mitchell" into LOTS of search engines! Glad you enjoyed the Sex Kills cover, this one seems to be popular and I'm delighted to see the feedback. Oh Bob I love you but there's no accounting for taste! I am a huge Aimee fan, came late to her through her cover of Nilsson's One in the Magnolia soundtrack, and then through her CD Bachelor #2. What you call mediocre I call subtle and slightly detached. The voice isn't spectacular, but neither is mine. Sisters with pale voices stick together. But I'm not trying to convert you. You and Aimee are both perfect the way you are :) I look forward to hearing her cover of River. But she has a deadpan and detached vocal style not necessarily suited for this song. I, too, discovered here through the movie Magnolia, which I think is an immortal masterpiece. - -----Original Message----- From: owner-joni@smoe.org [mailto:owner-joni@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Doug Sent: Monday, November 21, 2005 2:56 PM Cc: onlyJONI List Subject: Re: AIMEE covers RIVER I love Aimee's music but I never thought she was a very good singer. One, Build That Wall, and Save Me are all superb tracks. Maybe the producer on Magnolia did something magical because I've never heard anything on her other CD's that comes close. Like I said, she's Ok with good material, and I also like her duets with Michael Penn, his voice adds enough oomph to cover Aimee's "detachment". I'm sure her River will be all right, perhaps she can think back to the day when she was rude to Smurf and sing "I made Bob Murphy cry, I made Bob Murphy say goodbye...."
