Seven of the twelve songs are Joni's covers ( Amelia, All I Want, God Must be a Boogie Man, River, Harlem in Havana, Woodstock, A Case of You). Maria Pia is a fine jazz singer and she sounds wonderful on all the 5 tracks that she cowrote with her fellows. She also sounds very good on most Joni's covers ( it's always hard to compete with Joni's singing ). All musicians do a very good job on Joni's tracks and the result is quite interesting. I am always excited at the fact that Europeans are also aware of Joni's 90's work. The Harlem in Havana cover thrills me the most. And you're right, it's a challenge for any singer to compete with Joni's vocals which is why I always appreciate when a band or vocalist takes their interpretation to a different place than Joni did. The fact that 95% of Joni covers these days are coming from the world of jazz should make Joni a happy camper. 2005 has been a HUGE year for Joni covers. "Informal" is one category less formal than "slang". So what's the big deal ? To me, the answer is that Joni managed to string together 3 colloquialisms in a row - "real", "good" and "for free". Holy cow ! (Joni's lyric, not Joni herself). Phil Rizzuto would have been proud of her idiomatic logic. "He was playing really well, for nothing." It. But what? My take: She's at a place in her life where things are confused. She's feeling lost. She's searching for meaning or fulfillment. But everytime she thinks she's onto something, it doesn't pan out, it's just a false alarm. The six jet planes are not a mystical sign or omen. They're just a false alarm. Travelling around, seeing other places doesn't help. Picture postcard charms and where some have found their paradise, others just come to harm. Another false alarm. The love affair she's been in has ended with the man telling her to keep her distance. No permanent happiness, no emotional fulfillment - false alarm. Amelia's quest for fame and achievement ends up with her disappearance and probable death. Like Icarus, she fails to touch the sun. Another false alarm. Joni's own chicken scratching for her immortality has put her up in the cold, airless atmosphere still feeling empty. Maybe she's never really loved. It still doesn't do it. One more false alarm. Michael Flaherty ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 Nov 2005 15:55:39 -0800 (PST) From: Em Subject: Re: what was just a false alarm? thanks Michael, Mark and Jamie - for your input. Actually everything you all said makes sense, and from what you said, and from a gut feeling I had earlier (and it pains me greatly to realize) I think I now suppose the "false alarm" was the fleeting notion that she was free. That she "flew" or was otherwise "free'. It wasn't true; just seemed like it *might* was gonna happen. (like a badly timed orgasm almost) It was just a false alarm that she shook off earthly frustrations. By flight or by travel or by music. I find it tragic. But, you know, as humans, so few things are *perfectly* satisfying - especially once you're an adult. Things can be mighty groovy, and yet you're not free of the earth. Not like when you were a kid and could "break on through" and have moments of perfect joy. Just some thoughts..... But I think the "it was just a false alarm" line now strikes me as tragic. "I almost flew". Gotta be frustrating. I can see how the traveling would be healing. But not "easy" healing. Hard, abrasive healing. Damn, now Amelia's too sad to listen to! and not namby pamby sad (that was for you Bob) but gut wrenching to the point of desperate sarcasm sad. thanks you 3, for playing. I have to listen some more. Amelia is a really strange song. Its more than music, its more than painting. She casts about so much that she makes it 3-d and so it becomes sculpture nearly. Huge, though! Not only the geographical scope gives it this, but the human twisting and turning. lol, I may be full of sh_t! Em - --- Michael Flaherty wrote: > Everything Mark says makes sense.
