This is the one I've had in my head since I first started doing these. It's a little homage to both joni and Peter Gabriel - another artist I've been a fan of for a long time. You guessed it - it's My Secret Place. I hope you all like this one. I didn't realise that when my brother made it for me from old video tapes I had, he'd actually put (what I thought was) the long lost Nine Network's Today Show interview on it. Woohoo! I'm not sure if it was the same year but, Joni has to my knowledge, only ever been to Australia once to perform and once to promote (it turns out) Night Ride Home. The quality of the recording is poor, coming from videotape and the show looks very dated to me. That may just be because I remember the show and it's still on with different hosts. The presenters and interviewer (never seen her on TV since) look terribly uninterested and even say some crass things - George Negus (at the end of the interview): "Joni Mitchell. She's always been a bit of a cult singer with a cult following". Liz Hayes (Co-host) Looks pretty unimpressed with that comment. Joni is, as expected, the star of the interview. I'm not surprised she never came back for another one. She holds her own. The questions, themselves, are not bad. They lead her into talking about her career, her impressions of fans, how she writes songs and the album. The highlight is that she performs too. She performs the song, Number One with a 12 string (I think). She is dressed very stylishly and looks relaxed. I'll take a couple of screen shots soon and hopefully, they will be put up on the website. I'm trying to find a way to extract the video to make available to everyone. I could use some help. If anyone knows how to extract a piece of video from a DVD using a Mac, I would really appreciate it. Maybe even extract the audio of Joni singing, Number One would be good too. Oh yeah, there's even a short clip from the video of My Secret Place which is where I got the shots for the desktop pic that I just made. More to come. I was pondering a song the other day that I love - get together - and having known that joni sang it sometime in her early years I went looking for the transcription on the JMDL. I was prompted to go looking cos i caught Lizz wright singing it in her concert set here in Brighton last week and i also know the youngbloods version and my personal favourite - the carpenters on their ticket to ride album. Now to the question. Did Joni do a different jonified version of the song and if so where can i get to hear it? I tried and tried to play the version on the list but for the life of me cant get it to fit the melody i know. Any ideas. I ask because they're playing this on the radio right now and, when it first began, I could have sworn that the whiny discordant sound right at the start is the same one that Joni uses at the start of "Harry's House" (HOSL version). The sound that, to me, has always sounded exactly like "Heatwaves on the runway, as the wheels touch down." It has that hot, warped kind of sound. Hmm, I wonder. There's also a Rolling Stones song that starts off with chords that sound like the ones at the beginning of Coyote, but I'll be damned if I can remember what Stones song it is that I'm thinking about. I guess this isn't all that surprising - Keef uses the open G tuning a lot (but Coyote isn't in open G, is it? - never mind!)
