After going over it line by line, it seems to me that it is similar to Cactus Tree in that when love presents itself, we consider the loss of freedom first. To me, Amelia was a symbol of choosing freedom over the possible confinement of a relationship yet, winding up with the inevitable regret. With that knowledge of past experiences, we can feel torn. Is this others' take on Amelia too or am I way off the mark? In fact, it's a recurring theme throughout Joni's work - looking for the right love, thinking maybe you've found it, discovering it was "just a false alarm", or that you love your loving, but not like you love your freedom. Duality once again. In fact, in "Amelia", Joni even talks about pulling into "the *Cactus Tree* Motel to shower off the dust". And she references Both Sides Now when she talks about spending her "whole life in *clouds* at icy altitudes". Very clever woman, that Ms Mitchell. I wonder if she spent a long time working on that stuff or if it just kind of came to her unbidden. It's a gift.
