Mark E's explanation sounds the most likely but, I had another take on it when I first heard the song. It seems to be about a guy trying to entice a girl to leave her life behind in the city and head out to sea, throwing caution to the wind. For me, it followed on from Night In The City and I always imagined Joni was a bit of a night owl in those days. The Dawntreader to me is another way of saying, "night owl". Darn I forgot to mention... <<< I can't pigeon-hole a specific date or album... for me it's about her image and attitude as much as her music. >>> And the HAIR... Oh my! straight blunt-cut was her "early" style... what WAS she thinking with that perm later on? Probably the same thing I was when I got my stack-perm! Karen Marie asked: <<< What would you say "Early Joni Mitcell" would refer to? >>> I've been reading this thread with great interest. I've followed Joni's career, as most of you have, and to be completely honest, I never really considered which Albums fit definitively into any one period; some patently cross over in places. I consider "Early Joni Mitcell" to be the fresh young folk artist, sometimes playing her guitar alone and looking vulnerable; emotional, perhaps to a fault for the public eye. To me, her next phase was a "filling out" of her sound additional instruments gave a tonal richness somewhat like a chord embellishing a note. She really got into her piano and showed a depth which had been lacking to some extent previously. However, she still hadn't shed that "innocence" which for me characterizes her earlier work. In fact, "Song To a Seagull" sort of showcased her growth. If you're old enough to have owned the album there were two distinct styles from the seaside side to the city side and it seemed she was daring us to love both sides of her. (that both sides now theme re-occurring?) One simpler and more spare, the other certainly hipper and as rock-oriented as she allowed herself to be at that time. Lyrically she matured and tended to wear her life on her recordings, angst and a hint of bitterness creeping in as she worked harder to produce a more viable product for the airwaves. "For the Roses", for me, really began her love/hate relationship with rock and roll. She appeared to make a small attempt to fit into the mold of pop-artist for a short spell she had some commercial success with "You Turn Me On I'm a Radio", at least as far as airplay went. Wow... I could go on and on with impressions of her hayday and beyond. And you know there's so much more... I can't pigeon-hole a specific date or album... for me it's about her image and attitude as much as her music. Annie was asked how she came to decide to be a singer, having spent two years at the Royal Academy studying the Flute.... She said that she heard Joni Mitchell singing on "an album and was taken by the harmonies, the amazing harmonies" an she said how much Joni had influenced her decision. there was some discussion of which album it might have been and Mark Lamarr basically took over again.... I always thought that Joni had to be in there somewhere........ NP: World Turning LOUD From the November 2005 issue of Vanity Fair, Sheryl Crow contributes an article called "25 For The Road" listing her top 25 road-trip albums. They don't seem to be in any order, not numbered or anything. Among them is Hejira, and here's what Sheryl says: "There are just not that many women singer-songwriter-poet-performing artists who consistently move me. Joni Mitchell has and still does. Her album Hejira in many ways changed how I look at music, from the standpoint of creating what I refer to as "cinematography" for each song - in other words, the way a song should come across visually. I studied the song 'Hejira' like a handbook because its imagery of what it feels like to always be leaving or coming home so heavily resonated with me. I have admired Joni Mitchell, particularly during her early years, for giving voice to what we all sense sometimes: that we are searching for what feels like home." Jonis version of "Summertime" with Herbie Hancock is amazing , warmly recomended! Then I have to share the rest of the story I started on some weeks ago. My lost discman was refound. Someone gave it back, so I could get it at the tube station. And my Songs of a prairie girl was still there. Anyway Les in London had saved my day and weekend by sending me an extra copy, and this was before I knew that I would get the discman back. So last week me and a friend was sitting on the bus. I handed her my discman with Jericho, from DJRD. And afterwards she heard the old version of Paprika plains. My friend is a music teacher and her main instrument is the piano, and she found Jonis music lovely. So I, the joni-missionary man, spread the word and gave her the copy of SOAPG that Les had sent to me. And besides she borrowed my new DJRD, because it was one of those rainy nights, when she needed Comfort and consultation, and who can offer better comfort than our lady of duality our queen of mind beauty.
